Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

You cannot shame the shameless.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Let me file that under fuck it.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Full quote, because I missed he said "integrity": "The person I will nominate will be someone of extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity."

— Grace Segers (@Grace_Segers) January 27, 2022

Psaki says that anyone calling Biden's Supreme Court "extreme" before Biden has chosen her, "they just obliterated their own credibility."

— Jennifer Epstein (@jeneps) January 27, 2022

"The fact that no Black woman has been nominated shows a deficiency of the past selection processes — not a lack of qualified candidates to be nominated to the Supreme Court," @PressSec says.

— Joey Garrison (@joeygarrison) January 27, 2022

NBC News: Senate Democrats are aiming to confirm President Biden's Supreme Court nominee in a similar timeframe to the one Republicans used to confirm Amy Coney Barrett, who was confirmed just 27 days after her nomination. @NBCNews

— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) January 27, 2022

Impact of the Georgia runoffs will be felt here. If Democrats didn’t capture both those seats, Mitch McConnell would get to decide whether Biden’s SCOTUS nominee is allowed a vote. Instead it’s Chuck Schumer who makes that call.

— Sahil Kapur (@sahilkapur) January 26, 2022

Whomever she is, she'll be a heck of a lot better than Coney Barrett.

Cranky conservative ex-Repub:

I wonder if the same people bitching about Biden wanting to choose a Black woman – something long overdue – felt the same way about Reagan committing to a first woman or GHWB replacing Marshall with a Black nominee.
Note: I’m not actually wondering.

— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) January 27, 2022

Reagan promised to name a woman during the 1980 campaign and did. Eisenhower chose Brennan because he wanted to win Catholic Democratic votes in 1956. It's always been a coalition-building tool. https://t.co/hiio2DOZmW

— Matt Ford (@fordm) January 26, 2022

Setting aside the treatment of Ed Whelan here as a serious person, if you’re a New York Times reporter, before you cite something like this as a good or smart or relevant point I implore you to think for two fucking seconds about why this might be the case https://t.co/HBnNNmz4vC pic.twitter.com/vZucZtGpIn

(Josh Marshall has more history on Ed Whelan, Brett Kavanaugh’s biggest fan.)

Anyway here's National Review editor Ramesh Ponnoru explaining that the "main reason" he thought Trump should pick Barrett to replace Kennedy is because "she's a woman." https://t.co/EYEbk4ViIo pic.twitter.com/jWfGIYstty

Amy Coney Barrett never tried a case to a verdict. Not once.

Who was one of her biggest cheerleaders to get on the Supreme Court?

This guy ?? https://t.co/Et94weaNG0

— Tim Fullerton (@TimFullerton) January 27, 2022

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that ads were placed in the papers for SCOTUS justices.

— snow? (@snowmanomics) January 27, 2022

The job of Supreme Court justice is hard. When Breyer retires, Biden should replace him with five people.

— Jonathan 'Boo and Vote' Cohn (@JonathanCohn) January 26, 2022

Every liberal account with 50 followers right now: Biden is going to pick one of these two highly qualified Black women.

Every blue check paid politics knower: lmao he's going to pick Hillary and Republicans will win 99 senate seats.

Moar sarcasm:

1) Kamala to Supreme Court
2) Appoint Putin as Vice President, averting war
3) Impeach Putin as Vice President, averting having Putin as Vice President

F*** the pearl-clutchers: full speed ahead, Biden nominee! May you get through the process in 26 days exactly. =)

hmm…trying to segue’ here…speaking of…hmm…turning a new page? things looking up? things that our blessed snooze media didn’t see coming while trying their damndest to turn 2024 into a Biden/trumpov horse race?

Gary Abernathy (yes, him) in the WaPo: Republicans’ Main Job Now Isn’t Defining Themselves…It’s To Break With trumpov

whoooooooa nellie…is this the weirdest, sickest thing we’ve seen in a while? Treating it like a broken love affair?? (BARF)

to all those still hanging on, take some advice from a friend: It can be done.
First, accept that the relationship is over. Second, distance yourself by ignoring the rallies and shoving the MAGA hats to the back of the closet. Third, avoid social media and cable news. Fourth, reach out to any family members and friends who have avoided you since Trump came along. And, finally, visualize yourself without him. Imagine wearing a DeSantis, Christie, Noem, Haley, Cruz or Rubio lapel pin. Make them court you. You deserve to be appreciated.

Remember, just because you end the relationship with Trump doesn’t mean you have to regret that it ever happened. You can still treasure, as I do, the memory of his election in 2016, an upset that rocked the status quo. And you can still love all the things you shared — the desire for a secure Southern border and energy independence, resisting cancel culture wokeness, supporting an “America First” foreign policy and railing against liberal media bias.
Guess what? You’ll find there are plenty of other presidential candidates who share those interests.

Just beyond wacky. But whatever gets ’em fighting amongst themselves! =)

The idea that out of a population of over 300 million citizens only a handful are qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice is ridiculous. That the pool doesn’t include any black women is ridiculous squared.

Similar to the problem of paying CEOs monstrous salaries because we have to hire the most talented.

The worst part is that giving into that exhaustion, is the point. People like Tucker and his “friends” are aiming to concern troll anyone who gives a damn, into the ground.

It is actually progress when mediocre women can reach the same positions mediocre men can.

That is not the same thing as saying we should settle for less than exceptional.  For a long time either black or female automatically meant exceptional, just to get the job in the first place.  I have no doubt that whoever Biden nominates will be better qualified than any of the last three confirmed justices.

Hey, has anyone ever thought of giving Moscow Mitch some awards?

“Most corrupt president, corruptly covered up: Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell!”
“Most Corrupt: Mixed Pairs: It’s Mitch, “MC” connell FTW!”

I should explain mixed pairs. If you let off someone really corrupt, and you’re not very corrupt yourself, you get a high score, but the reverse, high corruption covering for low, is abysmal. High corruption is expected to cover up!

Oh, but, if the SCOTUS hadn’t done it, the first impeachment did, and they voted him a special bonus, because getting Trump off (sick) helped nearly a million people to die. So far.  Oh, I’m sure he wonders how his score compares to famously corrupt people, but that way leads toward Godwin problems, so let’s talk about something more pleasant.

Most TurtleLike:No. Sorry. Cheap shot. Beneath me. Oh, this is ol’ moscow?
Most Turtlelike: Mitch McConnell but only because a judge thought turtles could be warm blooded. The others gave him high marks, but liked turtles to much.

Any others? Most Supreme Court Justices Made Partisan By The Process, with 3? Most money given to wife by foreign interests? I dunno.

@LongHairedWeirdo: ah damn it. I hate that.

I said “getting Trump off (sick)” when I meant “getting Trump off (SIC)” . Well, probably in brackets: [sic], which is used to indicate that the wording/spelling may seem strange, but were accurately transcribed (barring mistakes, of course). Or maybe someone knows better and wants to share some sic knowledge?

See, I was just trying to say he really did want to get Trump off, you see, kind of a double entendre, so I wanted to say [sic], I chose that phrasing and… well you can’t fault me for confusing that with “sick” under the circumstances!.

The National Guard was called out in several cities to put down riots. One of these cities was Wilmington, Delaware.

    NARRATOR:

Black residents were angry. Joe Biden saw an opportunity to draw on his personal experience with race, back when he was 19 working at an inner-city pool.

    RICHARD “MOUSE” SMITH, Biden’s friend:

He was a lifeguard. He was one of two white guys. He was a tall, slim, young-looking, good-looking, Elvis Presley-looking kind of guy.

    JAMES BAKER, Fmr. mayor, Wilmington:

That’s how he got to know some of the guys who were in the gangs. He just seemed to have a natural instinct for getting to know people, getting to understand them, but not being afraid to be around them.

    RICHARD “MOUSE” SMITH:

We became friends. We became friends. I was a very troubled child, OK? Leader of a gang, no food at home, electric cut off, no soap, sometimes no soap and water to take a bath, no hot water.

    NARRATOR:

Joe and Ricky—he likes to be called “Mouse”—forged a lifetime friendship. Mouse introduced Joe all around the neighborhood. Over the years Biden kept in touch, building relationships in the Black community that would pay off.
