Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

No one could have predicted…

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Come on, man.

Open Thread (and Seattle Rendezvous This Saturday)

by WaterGirl|  February 10, 20228:00 pm| 111 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Talk About Whatever You Want

FacebookTweetEmail

So this is an open thread AND an announcement that CaseyL and Yutsano are going to rendezvous this Saturday in case anyone wants to join them.

From CaseyL and Yutsano:

CaseyL and I are going to be meeting up at Pike Place Market on Saturday the 12th at noon. We’ll be rendezvousing at the fish market where they throw the fish – which is right next to the main entrance. If no one in the area has plans feel free to come join us!

We’ll hang out, wander the market, decide on a food spot (there are lots around there) and probably be done by about 3. No one has any obligation to join us for the whole time.

If you would like to join Yutsano and CaseyL, chime in below or send me an email message and I’ll pass it on.

Otherwise, totally open thread!

Awesome.  A Los Angeles meetup would be amazing.  We would spend six hours negotiating the location for a one hour event.  And then everyone would flake at the last minute.  And we’d all be forgiving about that.  And we would discuss rescheduling, but everyone would tacitly assume that it won’t really happen, but congratulate ourselves on the effort.

I wasn’t born here, but I’ve gone native.

@Dan B: It would be wonderful to see you!

@WaterGirl:  That happened to me, more than once, which is why we try to have something distinctive nearby.  In this case, anyone local knows about “the fish place at Pike Market where they throw stuff.”  If the Meetup is at a restaurant, we’ll have a balloon or paper lantern or even a sign.

*”Maybe” only because we don’t know who else besides Yutsano and me will be there.

@WaterGirl: I saw the other day that you still cannot tell which of the redrawn Illinois Congressional districts you fall in. It might be worth calling your local Democratic party about this. They ought to know. If they don’t, it would be good to give them a nudge. The midterms are less than 10 months away, and those nice new Democratic districts aren’t going to elect Representatives all by themselves.

The thing about my hoist-joist-foist-moist example is that the Wordle WaterGirl complained about, #133, is one of those Wordles where there are at least two good answers, one letter apart. At that point, it isn’t your problem-solving abilities at play, it’s dumb luck.

The main good thing about Wordle is that it ended all the Twitter discussions on the NYT Spelling Bee. By replacing them with grids of colored boxes.

I haven’t been around here today, so I don’t know how much discussion there’s been of the latest from the hard-core wingnuts Virginia voters decided saw fit to elect. A deputy attorney general resigned after it came to light that she had posted on Facebook in support is the insurrection. And later that it was Antifa and BLM who were responsible for the violence. And that the Pentagon had evidence that China had interfered in the election. And argued with people at length about every conspiracy theory.

@HumboldtBlue: Disheartening indeed. Before Covid I helped out the Youth department at the Library running summer classes in 3D design for the local 4-H club and I was very impressed by them. Both the kids and their parents were really great and I dropped many points on the curmudgeon scale. It was a really positive experience so it saddens me that that club should be so crass

Desperately wish I had been in the courtroom when Sarah Palin said “objection!” during her testimony and Judge Rakoff had to explain to her that that’s not how objections work

I think she’s ripping off an old bit from Laverne and Shirley (okay, and probably 40% of all US sitcoms)

This morning a debate broke out in the LGM comments regarding whether bourbon or Scotch is the superior alcohol, and all I could think was, “My god, these people have no idea how badly they’re botching their approach to living life.”

Ayumu Hirona of Japan deservedly won the gold medal in the men’s snowboarding half pipe but it was his second run that caught the attention of the watching public after commentator Todd Richards called out the judges for what was, in his expert opinion, an abomination of judging.

    Barack Obama @BarackObama

It’s hard to believe that 15 years have passed since I stood in front of the Old Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, and announced my candidacy for President. At the time, our campaign was viewed as a longshot—historic perhaps, but unlikely to end in the White House.

I’m sorry that we can’t make it. We’d love to see you and everyone else, but we have to hang around to wait for a refrigerator to be delivered.
I’m a little cranky about this. Our “old” one is slowly biting the dust, and we ordered this new one on December 13. That’s really the fastest we could get one that we think will be acceptable.
I don’t want to talk about the price.

@opiejeanne: My house has a drop-in stove.  When I redid the kitchen, about 16 years ago, I got a new drop-in stove.  I don’t remember what it cost, but around $700 max, I think.  Since then, most appliance companies have stopped making them at all, and few who still do want $1400 and up.   So my current stove better last for as long as I’m living here!
