— Reuters (@Reuters) February 21, 2022
Canadian Alexis Cossette-Trudel, who is suspended from Facebook and Twitter for promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory, had a message he wanted to send from Canada to France.
The “Freedom convoy” protests against COVID-19 vaccine mandates that were starting to block transport links in Canada were striking a blow for freedom and French people should take note, he said in Quebec-accented French…
Five days later, a French “Freedom convoy” – with some people waving Canadian flags – defied a police ban to enter the French capital and snarled traffic around the Arc de Triomphe. The police deployed tear gas and made more than 50 arrests.
Reuters has found some of the loudest online voices coordinating France’s convoy have direct links with Cossette-Trudel and other Canadians, revealing a network of connections between “anti-vaxx” and right-wing groups in the two countries…
Cossett-Trudel told Reuters half of his viewership comes from France.
He operates in large part via Radio Quebec, a Francophone platform whose main editorial priority is opposing COVID-19 related restrictions and the vaccine, which he sees as part of “a power grab by the establishment”.
Suspended from mainstream social media, he now broadcasts via other platforms such as VKontakte, Odyssee, and Gettr favoured by people like Cossette-Trudel who have been removed from YouTube. Across the three platforms he has a total of more than 100,000 followers…

What pandemic restrictions?
ETA: Seriously, I think they missed the boat on this one. People in Florida have been acting like the pandemic is over for more than a year now. The vast majority of schools are open, and those that were closed were only shuttered because too many teachers and staff were sick, not because of a mandate. My understanding is that states that had strong mask requirements, etc., have been dialing that back. Are these assholes going to pretend it’s March 2020? Maybe they should go protest at Trump’s tacky-ass estate — he was POTUS then.

I know it has already been said but yes, the DC beltway is already congested to the point of standstill. If anything, the truckers may find themselves frustrated because there is nothing for them to accomplish. If they can manage to merge on all in one group. I’m just here to say that these guys use vehicles because they can’t organize a real protest. As all city planners know, motor vehicles occupy 100 times as much space as an actual human being, and have a presence totally disproportionate to actual human activity. Ten vehicles at a stoplight constitute “traffic congestion,” but ten bikes in a bike lane is
That’s why Trumpers have their so-called protests using motor boats, big pick up trucks, semi trucks and so on.
It accomplishes two things: the protest look a couple of orders of magnitude larger than they really are, for example just 100 pick up trucks looks like an enormous intimidating parade, but compare that to 100 people picketing on the street which would look relatively puny say compared to the women’s march or anything real.
The other effect is that you can use motor vehicle to block up space. In effect it’s as good as a tank if no one’s firing at you, which is no risk if you’re white.

This is a continuation and escalation from what was discussed in comments, yesterday. It’s Texas’ corrupt government playing out, at best, George Wallace-style playbooks with Trans people and their families, using them as “proof” they are doing something about children and deserve power. Lest we “fail” our children, the old bug-a-boo.
And they don’t need the Legislature to implement any of this, just to, as they have done, rubber-stamp any laws to make it worse for Trans kids in the state. The “duty to report” part is the implementation of direct consequences for already-overworked health care workers, on top of the Trans people and their families who are the key targets, and at by far the most risk.
I’m going to try to have more to say on this, but first I need a shower to wash off the stench of Jim Crow from all this shit.

They’re going to target the Beltway because they’re afraid of DC police.
MisterDancer
Most of the base have no idea what Griswold repeal would mean, nor would they care enough to check. Right-wing media will be happy to tell them some lie, like that it’s liberal overreach around one’s right to say what you want, or even some BS about women’s control over their bodies (watch they try to make it about “choice” in some twisted way.)
And they’ll swallow it en masse. They might lose a few on the edges, but right now it takes a massive fuck-up (like the church situation w/Trump) for Republicans to see serious defections.
Those who do know will be ecstatic, of course. This is what a lot of the Evangelicals have been praying for, for decades. They are desperate to roll back the wide availability of women-controlled contraception (they could care less about condoms, or even vasectomies) so that “loose” women can be properly shamed and put in their place.
That creates another group of easily-exploitable people that these asshats can abuse to stay in power and/or feel a sense of power-over, when so many of the rank-and-file are in fact powerless in many ways.

Speaking of grifters, anyone following the Phil Mickelson mess? In case you don’t follow golf he’s one of the best known and highest paid golfers. He’s involved in an attempt by the Saudis to form a breakaway league. In a conversation with Brian Alan Shipnuck who is writing a biography of him, Mickelson said this, which he now claims was off the record:
Or in other words, money, money money. There’s more involving media rights and so forth. He’s totally fine getting involved with the Saudis because as a top professional golfer he’s just not rich enough.
As a result of all this his longtime sponsor KPMG has dropped him and he’s “taking some time away” from golf. Pretty much no other professional golfers have supported him or this breakaway league project. Rory McIlroy, another top golfer had this to say:

@CaseyL:
Be patient, Covid is still working on it~!!~ Every time public health efforts work to diminish the plague, people insist those public health efforts cease, and the virus takes off again.
Is the current cycle the third or the forth outbreak?
How many cycles of public health measures working, being stopped, and the virus taking back off will it take for people to understand these public health measures need to be in place for far longer periods than we have been willing to give them so far?
Impatience is killing people, we’re going to pass a million dead Americans very soon now, and no signs of this thing stopping as long as the small minority continues to believe that it is a hoax and resisting masks and vaccines.
Frankly, I think everyone SHOULD have a right to refuse vaccination — I also believe those folks should be forced to stay quarantined at home until they get a full course of vaccinations.
Food delivery by the National Guard, VFD, Churches, etc once a week according to public health directions. And if you get caught outside your assigned quarantine residence, you immediately get transferred to a camp in the high desert out west with real fences and armed guards. Fuck around and find out, assholes!!!

@Gin & Tonic: Great to see this. I hope they prevail.

Right wingers love to say that people are afraid to go out because of POC, immigrants, gays, and Muslims who are (robbing, raping, murdering, harassing, offending, rioting – pick one or more). I am pretty sure that there are some who are afraid to go out because they believe that those things are true. And the thing to do to be safe is to buy a gun. OTOH, it is an affront to freedom to tell people they need to get a vaccine and wear a mask to keep from catching a disease that has killed over 900,000 people so far.
If it were up to me the national guard would be armed with bazookas and any MAGA marked semi blocking traffic would be a target.

We all know what to do. :-)
Those who feel guilty about stoking paranoia, well, argue insincerely that the paranoia might be unjustified. Wedges into fault lines.

@Shana: Easy, they’ll do it at 5:30 PM when it isn’t moving anyway.
