Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Fight them, without becoming them!

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

The more I read about this guy the funnier this gets. He isn't a "worker", he's owned *fleets* of trucks and multiple properties over the years. Longtime partisan Republican activist and big donor, also a convicted felon involved in all kinds of shady financial dealings https://t.co/HzxOSFSSPP

The transatlantic network connecting France's 'Freedom Convoy' to Canada https://t.co/sO55hvrpaf pic.twitter.com/uBsQYfYF9O

— Reuters (@Reuters) February 21, 2022

Canadian Alexis Cossette-Trudel, who is suspended from Facebook and Twitter for promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory, had a message he wanted to send from Canada to France.

The “Freedom convoy” protests against COVID-19 vaccine mandates that were starting to block transport links in Canada were striking a blow for freedom and French people should take note, he said in Quebec-accented French…

Five days later, a French “Freedom convoy” – with some people waving Canadian flags – defied a police ban to enter the French capital and snarled traffic around the Arc de Triomphe. The police deployed tear gas and made more than 50 arrests.

Reuters has found some of the loudest online voices coordinating France’s convoy have direct links with Cossette-Trudel and other Canadians, revealing a network of connections between “anti-vaxx” and right-wing groups in the two countries…

Cossett-Trudel told Reuters half of his viewership comes from France.

He operates in large part via Radio Quebec, a Francophone platform whose main editorial priority is opposing COVID-19 related restrictions and the vaccine, which he sees as part of “a power grab by the establishment”.

Suspended from mainstream social media, he now broadcasts via other platforms such as VKontakte, Odyssee, and Gettr favoured by people like Cossette-Trudel who have been removed from YouTube. Across the three platforms he has a total of more than 100,000 followers…

    What pandemic restrictions?

ETA: Seriously, I think they missed the boat on this one. People in Florida have been acting like the pandemic is over for more than a year now. The vast majority of schools are open, and those that were closed were only shuttered because too many teachers and staff were sick, not because of a mandate. My understanding is that states that had strong mask requirements, etc., have been dialing that back. Are these assholes going to pretend it’s March 2020? Maybe they should go protest at Trump’s tacky-ass estate — he was POTUS then.

Some of the US convoy channels I’ve been monitoring have taken a turn towards paranoia, and there’s a lot of discussion tonight about the convoy being a trap and/or getting infiltrated by the CIA or antifa. I saw multiple comments saying “it’s glowing.”

Some of the commenters are encouraging the convoy to stay away from DC, and some are encouraging truck drivers to just park their trucks and stop making deliveries instead of joining the convoy. Others are posting pics of trucks, claiming the convoy has already started.

Well my stupid AF (retired fire capt. and paramedic) antiva rwnj brother in fam group chat told my sister, who took mom to the ER for bloody runny poops, to ask the doc for Ivermectin once this issue is sorted out. I had a problem with that. So he called me sanctimonious and political while mom is in the ER. He has just enough medical knowledge to sound credible. I hate his guts now. I suppose that really started when he insisted Scalia was assassinated. Completely around the bend now. Will likely ruin all five of his children.

If I go to the store and throw a tantrum when people aren’t masking up do you think I can get to become a famous Karen and get an interview in the Times by someone who wants to try to understand me? Maybe I can become briefly famous for sitting on my sofa and not dying of some disease that I’ve been vaxxed against for 2 years now. That should be worth some subReddit.  I think what these assholes really fear is that we won’t make them famous for being stupid assholes much longer.

I know it has already been said but yes, the DC beltway is already congested to the point of standstill. If anything, the truckers may find themselves frustrated because there is nothing for them to accomplish. If they can manage to merge on all in one group. They may be underestimating how aggressive DC drivers are.

Also, props for the ADL for researching who gave money to both Jan 6th and the Canadian convoy but isn’t that what the FBI should be doing? (I joke).

Woman Desperately Seeking Excuse To Assault Retail Workers Now That Mask Mandate Lifted

ALBANY, NY—Staring down the store’s staff as she wracked her brain, local woman Monica Hadwin was reportedly desperately seeking an excuse to assault retail workers Tuesday now that the state’s mask mandate had been lifted. “I walked in without a mask and all I got was a ‘Hi, how are you today?’—what the hell am I supposed to do with that?” said Hadwin, who flexed her hands achingly as she surveyed the shop’s maskless staff and customers, longing for the perceived slight that would allow her to justify lunging across a counter to claw at a teenager’s face. “I guess no one offered me a free sample when I walked in, I could run with that. Or I could step out of the dressing room in a new outfit and then start screaming if nobody compliments me? No, that’s stupid. Even a ‘Masks Recommended’ sign or a bottle of hand sanitizer would be enough, but Jesus Christ. They just have to make this difficult.” At press time, Hadwin perked up immediately upon overhearing a worker speaking Spanish.

I’m just here to say that these guys use vehicles because they can’t organize a real protest. As all city planners know, motor vehicles occupy 100 times as much space as an actual human being, and have a presence totally disproportionate to actual human activity.  Ten vehicles at a stoplight constitute “traffic congestion,” but ten bikes in a bike lane is

That’s why Trumpers have their so-called protests using motor boats, big pick up trucks, semi trucks and so on.

It accomplishes two things: the protest look a couple of orders of magnitude larger than they really are, for example just 100 pick up trucks looks like an enormous intimidating parade, but compare that to 100 people picketing on the street which would look relatively puny say compared to the women’s march or anything real.

The other effect is that you can use motor vehicle to block up space. In effect it’s as good as a tank if no one’s firing at you, which is no risk if you’re white.

Serious Content Warning for Transphobia-as-Law: https://twitter.com/ErinInTheMorn/status/1496511396154163201

If you hare a “duty to report” in Texas, Texas is officially saying that you have to report trans youth to family and protective services or risk losing your job.

This is a continuation and escalation from what was discussed in comments, yesterday. It’s Texas’ corrupt government playing out, at best, George Wallace-style playbooks with Trans people and their families, using them as “proof” they are doing something about children and deserve power. Lest we “fail” our children, the old bug-a-boo.

And they don’t need the Legislature to implement any of this, just to, as they have done, rubber-stamp any laws to make it worse for Trans kids in the state. The “duty to report” part is the implementation of direct consequences for already-overworked health care workers, on top of the Trans people and their families who are the key targets, and at by far the most risk.

I’m going to try to have more to say on this, but first I need a shower to wash off the stench of Jim Crow from all this shit.

@West of the Rockies: Is that really and truly a winning idea for the broad Republican base?

Most of the base have no idea what Griswold repeal would mean, nor would they care enough to check. Right-wing media will be happy to tell them some lie, like that it’s liberal overreach around one’s right to say what you want, or even some BS about women’s control over their bodies (watch they try to make it about “choice” in some twisted way.)

And they’ll swallow it en masse. They might lose a few on the edges, but right now it takes a massive fuck-up (like the church situation w/Trump) for Republicans to see serious defections.

Those who do know will be ecstatic, of course. This is what a lot of the Evangelicals have been praying for, for decades. They are desperate to roll back the wide availability of women-controlled contraception (they could care less about condoms, or even vasectomies) so that “loose” women can be properly shamed and put in their place.

That creates another group of easily-exploitable people that these asshats can abuse to stay in power and/or feel a sense of power-over, when so many of the rank-and-file are in fact powerless in many ways.

As I mentioned yesterday, book bans and other attempts to whitewash history, are VERY unpopular.  Dems need to hang this shit around the neck of EVERY Republican.  We can also celebrate progress that has been made while still acknowledging how much remains to be done (the style of framing Obama used successfully):

A new CBS News poll offers data that should prod Democrats into rethinking these culture-war battles. It finds that surprisingly large majorities oppose banning books on history or race — and importantly, this is partly because teaching about our racial past makes students more understanding of others’ historical experiences.

The poll finds that 83 percent of Americans say books should never be banned for criticizing U.S. history; 85 percent oppose banning them for airing ideas you disagree with; and 87 percent oppose banning them for discussing race or depicting slavery.

What’s more, 76 percent of Americans say schools should be allowed to teach ideas and historical events that “might make some students uncomfortable.” And 68 percent say such teachings make people more understanding of what others went through, while 58 percent believe racism is still a serious problem today.

Finally, 66 percent say public schools either teach too little about the history of Black Americans (42 percent) or teach the right amount (24 percent). Yet 59 percent say we’ve made “a lot of real progress getting rid of racial discrimination” since the 1960s.

Speaking of grifters, anyone following the Phil Mickelson mess? In case you don’t follow golf he’s one of the best known and highest paid golfers. He’s involved in an attempt by the Saudis to form a breakaway league. In a conversation with Brian Alan Shipnuck who is writing a biography of him, Mickelson said this, which he now claims was off the record:

“They’re scary motherf—–s to get involved with,” he said. “We know they killed [Washington Post reporter and U.S. resident Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”

Or in other words, money, money money. There’s more involving media rights and so forth. He’s totally fine getting involved with the Saudis because as a top professional golfer he’s just not rich enough.

As a result of all this his longtime sponsor KPMG has dropped him and he’s “taking some time away” from golf. Pretty much no other professional golfers have supported him or this breakaway league project. Rory McIlroy, another top golfer had this to say:

“I don’t want to kick someone while he’s down obviously, but I thought [Mickelson’s comments] were naive, selfish, egotistical, ignorant,” McIlroy said. “A lot of words to describe that interaction he had with Shipnuck. It was just very surprising and disappointing. Sad.”

I know it’s golf and not trucker protests or Russia/Ukraine but it’s another grifter suffering the consequences of his own words and actions. Good riddance.

Legend has it that Marcus Licinius Crassus of Rome was killed by the mutineering men he’d led into a failed battle, who poured molten gold down their leader’s throat in mockery of his thirst for wealth. Philip Alfred Mickelson of Rancho Santa Fe, on the other hand, was merely deserted by his bootless troops as the cause in which he had conscripted them slipped away. As for the symbolic choking on needless greed, he served and swallowed that ruinous cocktail himself.

Sports parents, yeah, salt of the earth.

Marysville police officers on Tuesday morning arrested a Yuba County father accused of leaving threatening messages containing racial and homophobic slurs for coaches because he was upset over his child’s position in a game.

Todd Andrew Tyler, 53, of Browns Valley was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, hate speech involving threats and carrying a concealed gun in a vehicle, the Marysville Police Department announced in a news release. Shortly before 7:30 a.m., officers pulled over Tyler near Highway 20 at East 22nd Street in Marysville. Tyler was taken into custody without incident.

Police said officers searched Tyler’s vehicle and found a .45 caliber handgun with two loaded ammunition magazines in the center console. On Sunday, two coaches working for Marysville Joint Unified School District reported the alleged crimes to police. Tyler had left several threatening messages for both coaches on their phones, according to the Police Department.

Police said Tyler appeared to be upset with the coaches about his child’s position in a game. Officers did not say what kind of sport the child played.

If a bunch of trucks just stop at a certain point drivers will just get off take surface streets to the next entrance and get back on. Or do they think they’ll be able to coordinate at the on and off ramps and just stop there? This has an underpants gnomes air to it.

    @CaseyL:

Why didn’t Covid get them all?

Be patient, Covid is still working on it~!!~ Every time public health efforts work to diminish the plague, people insist those public health efforts cease, and the virus takes off again.

Is the current cycle the third or the forth outbreak?

How many cycles of public health measures working, being stopped, and the virus taking back off will it take for people to understand these public health measures need to be in place for far longer periods than we have been willing to give them so far?

Impatience is killing people, we’re going to pass a million dead Americans very soon now, and no signs of this thing stopping as long as the small minority continues to believe that it is a hoax and resisting masks and vaccines.

Frankly, I think everyone SHOULD have a right to refuse vaccination — I also believe those folks should be forced to stay quarantined at home until they get a full course of vaccinations.

Food delivery by the National Guard, VFD, Churches, etc once a week according to public health directions. And if you get caught outside your assigned quarantine residence, you immediately get transferred to a camp in the high desert out west with real fences and armed guards. Fuck around and find out, assholes!!!

Right wingers love to say that people are afraid to go out because of POC, immigrants, gays, and Muslims who are (robbing, raping, murdering, harassing, offending, rioting – pick one or more).  I am pretty sure that there are some who are afraid to go out because they believe that those things are true.  And the thing to do to be safe is to buy a gun.  OTOH, it is an affront to freedom to tell people they need to get a vaccine and wear a mask to keep from catching a disease that has killed over 900,000 people so far.

If it were up to me the national guard would be armed with bazookas and any MAGA marked semi blocking traffic would be a target.

    @Jim, Foolish Literalist:

Some of the US convoy channels I’ve been monitoring have taken a turn towards paranoia, and there’s a lot of discussion tonight about the convoy being a trap and/or getting infiltrated by the CIA or antifa. I saw multiple comments saying “it’s glowing.”

We all know what to do. :-)
Those who feel guilty about stoking paranoia, well, argue insincerely that the paranoia might be unjustified. Wedges into fault lines.

@Shana: Easy, they’ll do it at 5:30 PM when it isn’t moving anyway.
