The 7 day average of cases in the US increased sharply to 74,000. About 3,000 of that jump was a data dump in NE. Deaths also increased to over 2,000. This is an artifact of the MLK holiday reporting one week ago. Averaged over the last 6 days cases were 55,600 (about 52,500 excluding NE), and deaths were just under 1900.
Cases increased in AK, CA, DC, ID, MT, NE, NV, OK, VT, and WA. Again, most of these are probably artifacts of last Monday’s holiday (most importantly, CA’s increase seems to be).
If the last 6 days’ average is giving the truer reading, then the rate of new cases is down to 17 per 100,000, somewhat above the average for most of 2020, and below all of 2021 except for a few days in March and the months of May through July. Cases in the NYC metro area and OH and MD are probably below 10 per 100,000.

I would not know how to answer a question about how concerned I am about catching COVID.
I am 3X vaxxed, wear a mask inside public places, wash my hands regularly, and practice safe distancing (three metres) outside all the time.
I am still concerned about getting it and what it could do to me. Do I think I will catch it? NO, BECAUSE OF THE PRECAUTIONS I TAKE.
It is totally unsurprising to me that those who are not vaccinated and most probably do not practice any public health precautions are least concerned. It would be the literal definition of insanity if one of those pro-COVID folks said they were still concerned about catching the virus yet refused every potential mitigation.
Fair Economist
I guess we’ll have to make our own reports.
In my neck of the woods, OC CA, ICU cases are down to 41 from 76 last week (down 46%) while hospitalized cases are down to 230 from interpolated 345 last week (down 33%). These numbers are comparable to our post-Delta plateau; somewhat higher for hospitalization and somewhat lower for ICU. Given that it looks like they’ll continue to improve for a while it looks like the post-Omicron situation will be better than the post-Delta situation, at least here.
It’s hard to interpret case changes with all the changes in testing (less general demand; fewer requirements, more at-home and probably unreported). I’ll try to figure out a way to bracket things using the fact that these changes will drive positivity up and cases down, but I haven’t done that yet. That said, 7-day average cases a week ago (359) are down 40% from 7-day average a week before that (603), not too far from the hospitalization changes, so changes are useful even if comparisons to earlier periods are dubious.
Personal report: my mom’s anti-vax housekeeper, who is the lynchpin of my mother’s complex 24 hour care arrangements, was sick with some upper respiratory disease last week, dead tired, and couldn’t sleep. But she was still working last week because she needed the pay. Ah, America. She’s out this week though because she’s even worse. Yeah, probably COVID. She actually had it once last February, and it killed her husband, but still no vax. Anti-vax = Death.
My mother would normally be really upset (the housekeeper didn’t tell her she was working sick) but she just got over COVID herself; a pretty mild case since she’s boosted and got molnupiravir, so she figures she’s pretty well protected.
OzarkHillbilly
@raven: I suspect most folks aren’t extremely worried, just worried enough to take precautions.

Something that I have tried to explain to a few pro-COVID folks (and others) about my fear is not specifically about catching the virus, but of SPREADING the virus.
I cannot think of anything worse than being the agent of someone else’s infection through my own carelessness.
Thats why I am very careful, because I give a shit about people, and not only those who I am close to.

Greece: Monday evening’s report, via Kathimerini, noted 16,263 new cases in the preceding 24 hours, up from weekend numbers but down from this time last week. 70 dead in the same time period. Outdoor mask mandates remain in effect.

As far as vaccine effectiveness in kids, I’ve got an anecdote. My 7 year old daughter got her 2nd dose the day after Thanksgiving. The first week of January she had cold-like symptoms which turned out to be Covid. She had sneezing and a runny nose for 2 days. It was the mildest illness I can remember her ever having. She caught it from her swimming teacher. They were within a few feet of each other, outside, for 30 minutes. He was wearing a wet mask which I assume was completely ineffective. He was vaccinated but not boosted.
For comparison, two of her friends had Covid earlier last year before the vaccines were available. Both were quite sick for a week, although neither needed hospitalization. Was the difference the vaccine? I don’t know, but I do know my vaccinated daughter had a case of Covid that was extremely mild.

Wife is vulnerable, her immune system was damaged some 11 or 12 years ago in a bout with necrotic pneumonia which caused septic shock. I’m still pretty healthy as far as my immune system goes, we have both had three doses of vaccine.
I plan to wear a mask when out in public for quite a while for the sake of Wife’s health. Plus I haven’t had a cold nor flu in quite a while… have had a flu shot every year for many, many years now. Also my other “childhood” vaccinations, whooping cough, tetanus, etc have been boosted recently.
