“The plea marks the first successful use of a sedition charge by federal prosecutors in decades.”https://t.co/4LOXO0zgnQ

Joshua James of Alabama pled guilty this afternoon to two felony counts:
- Obstruction of a government function
- Seditious Conspiracy
As part of the plea deal, he agreed to accept that the government has the right to argue for an upward enhancement in his sentence. He is also cooperating.
His statement of offense is quite exhaustive.

Keep turning you wheels of justice! Turn, turn, turn!

They turn slow, but they grind exceedingly fine.

Can someone explain something to me?
We are at war with one of our biggest, if not the biggest, adversaries. Our allies are mobilizing, the threat of nuclear weapons is in the open.
One party, presumably aligned with the adversary, decided to be absent from the State of the Union address. Are we sure there was no plan to bomb the Capitol?
Redshift
Excellent!

@Sebastian: I can only assume that as morbid as my imagination can be, the Secret Service has well-trained professionals specializing in imagining much more morbid things and that they prepare for them.
At any rate, the Capital still stands.

@Sebastian:
We know nothing was discovered.

Those guys in that picture look so absurd and pathetic after this last week.

@raven: The stuff starting at item 43 is interesting, concerning the period after evening of Jan. 6.
Edit: So among other things, this seems to ratchet up the pressure on Rhodes.
Chief Oshkosh
@prostratedragon: Yep. Just reading the first couple of pages of the charge seems to indicate that (though IANAL). Hope I’m comprehending it.
:)

What could there be hiding that would make admitting to sedition the better outcome . . . . must be a really solid mountain of evidence at the very least but, um, any possibility of more o! eagles of legals? Not at all that I’m displeased with the current helping!
raven
@prostratedragon: Good, that fucker needs to swing.

@Baud:
There was that mysterious pipe bomber, remember? People are still debating whether it was Boebert or MTG.
CaseyL
The Statement of Offense keeps referring to “others” who they met with, discussed plans with, and were in contact with during the insurrection. I’d sure like to know those others are: 3%er no-names? Roger Stone? Don Jr.? Boebert? MTG?
bbleh
Legally, great! Lock up the leaders and confiscate the assets of the movement. That’s how you break it.
Politically, meh. Not a mind will be changed. This is just putting on paper what everybody knows, and the Cult thinks it’s fully justified because The Leader and also reasons.
It’s the New Confederacy. Time for another Sherman’s March.

@CaseyL: Marcy Wheeler seems pretty confident he has Information to give up on Stone and Stewart Rhodes
the thread is worth reading, I think
Chief Oshkosh
@bbleh: Maybe so. Maybe so. However, if people get hard time for this, there will be a chilling effect on the other knuckleheads. Right now they still think they’re invincible. That goes away with the first conviction with a long sentence and fines that wipe out the entire net worth of the guilty. It won’t affect all of them (hell, some of them actually are mentally negligible), but it will hit home with the ones who 1) have an IQ greater than their age and 2) have more than two nickels to rub together.
prostratedragon
@scav: Ok, your first sentence got a laugh out of me.
prostratedragon
@CaseyL: And afterward, who that is part of “we” who advised to purge accounts?
Gvg
Who is the lawyer and where did the money for all this come from?
bbleh
@Chief Oshkosh: yeah that’s basically the distinction I was trying to draw (evidently not well). Cripple the “action wing” by locking up leaders, defunding them generally, and also, as you say, creating examples pour encourager les autres. When I used the word “politically” I meant, in the realm of electoral politics (vs violent action). The background funders, of course, won’t be touched, and their money will still flow, but at least it will flow to jaw-jaw rather than war-war.

I read the filing (thank you!), and I’m sorry – I know how serious this is and how we need to root these a**holes out root and branch, but … James and his crew rode to the Capitol on golf carts?? WTF?!? Like they were cruising to the green?
Somehow I can’t envision them playing a round with the tangerine traitor … (And where the hell did the golf carts come from?)
