Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I really should read my own blog.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

After roe, women are no longer free.

White supremacy is terrorism.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

T R E 4 5 O N

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Heather Cox Richardson interviews President Biden

I know some of y’all are fans of historian Heather Cox Richardson, author of “Letters from an American,” a Substack page that doesn’t feature whiny-ass contrarian content. She said Biden’s people reached out to see if she wanted to interview the president recently (smart!), and she did so on February 25:

Biden threw a little shade at Manchin at around the 10-minute mark — just a one-liner about how people don’t understand what’s in BBB “mainly because one senator from West Virginia talks about how it’s all social spending…” (PawPaw Blacklung is probably meeping about this hate crime to Axios right now.)

Other tidbits: Biden’s brother and John Meacham decorated the Oval Office and chose to hang a portrait of FDR because they said no other president had ever taken office as far behind the eight-ball on the economy except FDR, and they included a painting of Lincoln because no other president had come into office with the population more divided.

Biden says American democracy will survive because most Americans are fundamentally “decent and honorable” and “phony populism” is transitory. He still believes it’s possible to unite this country, and he acknowledged that current levels of wealth inequality are incompatible with democracy but thinks it’s possible to address this in a bipartisan way.

We’ll see!

One quality Biden has that’s really powerful, maybe even his superpower: He doesn’t look down on voters. That comes through toward the end.

I think almost every previous president at least pretended to have that quality, except maybe TFG, but for Biden, it seems genuine. I do not share that trait, but I see the value of it.

She spends a lot of time curating the 3-5 most important stories of the day and provides historical context and links. She’s brilliant and authentic.  I would characterize her as fact and values based

I have tried to adopt an optimistic posture but that’s all I can manage. I think Biden’s sincerely felt optimism is related to his deep religious faith, something else I am incapable of summoning.

Do y’all remember when Marilynne Robinson interviewed PBO? This conversation reminds me of that. The Robinson-Obama convo was more philosophical and erudite. But there’s a similar vibe — a POTUS who’s thoughtful but relaxed because he’s not talking to a shill who’s trying to flush out click-bait.

Biden seemed in good form during the interview.

this, lifted from Digby, is cheering:

After what’s been a bleak several months politically for President Biden, a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist survey finds he is seeing a significant boost in his approval ratings across the board following his State of the Union address and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“This is an unusual bounce,” said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted the poll. “It gets him back to where he was pre-Afghanistan.”

The theme of dignity of being able to afford the medicine for your child’s chronic condition is one Biden has hit on repeatedly. I guess it is a more uplifting framing than “We, one of the richest countries in the world, should not let your kid die because some rich people in government have forgotten that people who are not rich and not just pharmaceutical companies make up their constituents.”

@Betty Cracker: Also, I’m sadly struck by the probability that few, if any, nominal R voters will see this conversation, much less appreciate it honestly.  If they even catch wind, in any context, of what he says here, thoughtfully and compassionately, about their own self interest they’ll reflexively dismiss ol Sl**py Joe as senile.

Contrast with just about any interview with their hero, TFG, whom they revere despite his obvious incompetence and failures laid bare.

Off topic but related, I took a detour from the last thread to check out Wikipedia’s trove of megayacht pages.  There are a lot of them.  There is even a category of megayacht tenders, many of which are larger than a lot of megayachts, and exist solely to provide space for stores and supplies, maintenance and recreational services and equipment, and housing for non-crew service employees.

A very different world from the one I live in.

Not unlike the goober lament above.

Funny thing. I just bought a bargain yacht on Craigslist from a Russian oligarch. Too much trouble to operate. I will probably sell it on EBay.

When I taught a tax class, I would try to have fun with current events and try to make numbers relatable.

And so, I would note that the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire was that the millionaire superstar athletes could go party on a yacht, but only billionaires could own and operate them.

So, for example, a tiny 180 ft yacht might cost $40 million. And then, it costs a minimum of $4.5 million per year to operate and maintain.

He’s much more politic than I could ever dream to be and despite the incredible hardships in his life, he seems to give the benefit of doubt when there should be none. Sometimes it’s infuriating and sometimes I’m humbled by his grace.

One quality Biden has that’s really powerful, maybe even his superpower: He doesn’t look down on voters. That comes through toward the end.

Biden’s decency is genuine. Trump and the Republicans could never effectively counter it, even though they tried hard.

Most voters got the message and voted for the guy who was genuine and decent. I think some people who usually vote Republican also got the message. But the GOP has to expend a great deal of time and effort in trying to push lies about Biden and the Democrats. They don’t have much else.

And it’s so, so deeply gratifying to hear his humility and gift of service.

TFG by contrast made everything about himself.  Biden observes and catalyzes.

If a small fraction of nominal R voters are persuadable and successfully reached, we ought to keep the all-important House in November.

One of this things I miss most is asking him about his perspective on current events vs other periods in history. Dr. Richardson fills that gap to some degree.

Good article about the collection of grifters and crooks collecting money for the “Freedom Convoy”

At a rally point near the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Tex., as the wind whipped American flags atop an 18-wheeler behind her, a Southern California lawyer and anti-vaccine activist named Leigh Dundas exhorted a crowd to make donations.
“We’re going to be doing a little altar call up here. A hundred percent of that cash is going back into the boys’ pockets for the next fuel stop,” Dundas told onlookers and live-stream viewers, encouraging them to give online to the “People’s Convoy,” a U.S.-based group of activists opposed to vaccine mandates and inspired by the self-styled “Freedom Convoy” that occupied Canada’s capital for weeks.
The group set a goal of $5 million to fuel its fight and claimed to have collected $1.5 million by Monday, eliciting growing support across the country from people who’ve cheered at rallies, demonstrated from chilly highway overpasses, and taken to social media to profess a loss of faith in government, politicians, media and other institutions they paint as corrupt and out of touch.
They want to do something, so they give. In this case, to the AFCLF Foundation, which launched last year and names as its executive director a Texas woman named Pamela Milacek, whose arrest is sought, records show, by authorities who allege she violated the terms of her community supervision after pleading guilty to felony fraud and exploitation charges in 2020.
