Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

It’s a doggy dog world.

We’re not going back!

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

Come on, man.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

It’s easier to kill a dangerous animal than a man who just happens to have different thoughts/values than one’s own.

A consequence of cucumbers

Gotta respect the bald moral deciduousness of pretending to be scandalized by the DNC chair saying rude things about Republicans in the same week an elected House GOP member called Democrats "pro-pedophile." https://t.co/F6xIrdLqOC

— Michael Hobbes (@RottenInDenmark) April 6, 2022

Good for Jaime Harrison. Hot-Take Josh should be listed as a major in-kind donor on the RNC’s balance sheets.

Of course, his defense would be But I’m just doin’ it for the lulz social media klout!

Or lol Hillary's "gaffe" about the basket of deplorables? Or Obama's "cling to guns and religion" and "you didn't build that"?

— Michael Hobbes (@RottenInDenmark) April 6, 2022

Guys like Josh (and a lot of the Republican professional class) don’t like to be made to feel uncomfortable by the reality of what they’re enabling and get very offended when you point that out

— Jay (@jdbatts79) April 6, 2022

I've never seen Kraushaar offer an analysis that wasn't just a naked expression of his own preferences. It's honestly kind of impressive.

— Merkin Muffley (@MerkinMuffley5) April 6, 2022

The clicks were so easy when the former guy was running the news cycle with 200+ tweets per day and an unlimited White House corruption buffet with carryout boxes for later book material

— Tweetmonger™️ (@DwayneFuhlhage) April 6, 2022

Basically this. Journalists either knowingly launder bad-faith Republican complaints into weeklong debates or they're so naive that they shouldn't be covering politics. https://t.co/zIDjcwk7IP

Seems like an evergreen Republican tactic to me.

NPR ( or at least All Things Considered) has been relentlessly “alleged russian war crimes” like anyone else was doing that mayhem and random murder.

I look forward to the Four Pinocchios that will be given because there is no evidence that Cotton literally is infested with maggots.

I cannot spot the lie in Jaime Harrison’s comments regarding bag of maggots Tom Cotton and the entirety of the Republican Party and their embrace of fascism. I applaud his salty comments! Here we’ve lost a voice unafraid to call bullshit on the current state of the media with the accidental death of Eric Boehlert, and bottom feeding what abouters like Josh carry on carrying water for his preferred party. Just not fair.

NPR ATC was yet another example of our media failure just this evening. A story on abortion laws and access and what Oregon is doing to undo the effects of gutting Roe.

This is Katia Riddle’s story about it – not quite a transcript, but close. But listen to Ailsa Chang’s introduction to the story (in the blue audio link above the picture).

(Roughly) These states are doing this, and this state is doing this, and that state is doing that. “Meanwhile, neighboring Oregon, like other liberal states, …” (starting at 0:20 in the 4:41 audio link).

No mention at all in her introduction that the GQP is ramming all of these blatantly unconstitutional laws through their legislatures and having GQP governors sign them.

And it looks like these introductory framing segments don’t get included in the text of the stories. And like the headlines, it sets the tone for the reader as to what they’re expected to take from it as being important.

Chang also has a verbal tick that drives me nuts – she way over emphasizes numbers: “MILLIONS” “THOUSANDS” “BILLIONS”. It’s almost comical, in an annoying way.

Katia Riddle’s story is a good (as in well done) one and well worth a listen.

    Grr…,
    Scott.

@Baud: At the very least, give Tom Cotton xrays, a CT scan, an MRI and full anal probe before declaring he does not, in fact, have maggots. One cannot be too sure.

@CarolPW: true.   During the hearing today for the General Counsel of the CIA, he wished her older children the best since they would have to deal with the new addition to the family.  The older children are four and maybe seven, but I’m not sure.  The nominee is due any day

most children are excited about a new addition to the family, but that idea must be foreign to Cotton

I think it’s more likely that his fruit cellar is infested with maggots. Tom Cotton seems to me like the sort of person who would murder his own mother, embalm her, and keep her around the house to talk to.

At least one death today improved the world. Vladimir “Mad Vlad” Zhirinovsky’s loathsome existence was ended by Covid. A man who advocated enslaving all non Russians in countries adjoining Russia and dealing with Russia’s nuclear waste by piling it up on their western boarder and turning on some very big fans amongst his many repellent policy ideas.

If I remember correctly “De mortuis nil nisi bonum” translates, for people like Zhirinovsky (and the entire Rethug Partei), as “He’s dead? Good.”

NB: I have never studied Latin. Although I have attempted to “study” various Latinas — does that count?

Nehemiah Persoff, an actor who went from the uncredited role of a cab driver in On The Waterfront‘s iconic “coulda been a contender” scene to become one of the busiest character actors in television and film for five decades, died Tuesday at a rehabilitation facility in San Luis Obispo, California. He was 102.

Persoff had retired from acting in recent decades after suffering a stroke and other health issues. His death was reported to Deadline by a family friend.

A long life, and so many memorable roles. Peace.

    @zhena gogolia:

Yep. Bobby Rydell, 60s teen idol, age 79

His death just days away from his 80th birthday was confirmed by radio legend Jerry Blavat, Rydell’s longtime friend from the singer’s South Philadelphia stomping grounds. “Out of all the kids” from that era, Blavat said, “he had the best pipes and was the greatest entertainer. He told the best stories, did the best impersonations and was the nicest guy.”

Rydell’s fame as the epitome of an American teen pop star in the days just prior to rock’s British Invasion was such that Rydell High School in the Broadway musical and subsequent film “Grease” was named after him. An actor also portrayed him in a performance scene in the film “Green Book.”

He was fun in “Bye Bye, Birdie.”
