Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This really is a full service blog.

This blog will pay for itself.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Let’s finish the job.

Infrastructure week. at last.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

From up top, i copied it from the Biden schedule page.  Bolded part is what I would add.

The President, The Vice President, and Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson deliver remarks on the Senate’s historic, BARELY bipartisan confirmation of Judge Jackson to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

@TaMara: we really need to just dispense with this whole “friends across the aisle” bullshit. They have ever any genteel language with Democrats. I think we try to appeal to our “best nature” – we inevitably get stupid gotcha questions from the press about why we are so mean to the Republicans.

Is it wrong of me to hope that Clarence Thomas’s seat becomes vacant just prior to the next election like RBG’s? Not for the same reason of course. I just want to watch the meltdown on the Right when they get payback for how they rushed through things for for ACB.

Off topic, but I have to go out for a while, and this deserves to be seen.

Worthy GoFundMe cause here, sponsored by Akiva Cohen, for “legal aid to survivors of domestic violence.” This is legit (vouched for by @Popehat). Cohen:

A friend of mine, one of the best attorneys I know, does critical pro bono work for survivors of domestic violence in a state I can’t name, for reasons I explain below. They help domestic violence victims obtain orders of protection, divorces, child support and visitation agreements, and other critical relief. And their clients don’t have anywhere else to go—they are poor, typically immigrants whose husbands or boyfriends try to use the legal system to bury them. [. . .] They currently have 57 clients with cases in order of protection, divorce, juvenile and civil court, all of whom are victims of domestic and/or sexual violence or stalking.

Unfortunately, their organization (and it’s a legitimate 501(c)(3)) has let them know that they have a budget shortfall pending the results of a federal grant application that will be determined in September 2022. Unless they raise $40,000 for the survivors aid project by the end of April, they will need to close the project. If they get $40,000 by the end of the month, they can keep the program open with their staff part-time. If they can raise $55,000, they can keep the program open full-time through September. But because they don’t want to cause concern about their other programs, they are unwilling to make a public announcement about this, and I’m therefore unable to announce the name of the organization. (Though those of you who know me have probably figured it out).

If you provide contact details for your donation, I will work to connect you with the organization so you can get a donation receipt. I know it’s a big ask, but it’s a big need. Let’s see what we can do.

I threw in some money, and I appreciate whatever anyone else can give.

President Biden always chooses real human beings for the big positions, people with life and joy and personality.  Quite a contrast to the other side.  No, make that totally opposite from the other side.

Interesting that Biden so strongly, and repeatedly, praised Dick Durbin for his role in getting this nomination through.  I was as frustrated as anyone, but if all the stuff we hated is what it took to get this through with enough votes, maybe we should take our cue from Nancy SMASH.

    Just win, baby!

Mr. Biden swagging out in his aviators and well-tailored suit, with KBJ on one side and the VP on the other.

“I made this happen,” he seemed to be saying. “And it is a Big Biden Deal!”

    The speeches were all wonderful.

@Old School: 12:15 on a Friday afternoon?! It’s like they’re not even trying to make this into a good campaign event.

I’m sure there will be a separate ceremony in the (former) Rose Garden, by invitation only to major party donors, where Judge Jackson will pledge her oath of fealty to President Biden and swear to take revenge on all those who offended her at the hearings. After which the flags and bunting from the event will be sold on eBay and the money given to the First Lady.

After all, we must uphold the traditions…
