The U.S. is getting a first glimpse of what it’s like to experience COVID-19 outbreaks during this new phase of living with the virus, and the roster of the newly infected is studded with stars.
Cabinet members, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Broadway actors and the governors of New Jersey and Connecticut have all tested positive. Outbreaks at Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University are bringing back mask requirements to those campuses as officials seek out quarantine space.
The known infections likely reveal only the tip of the iceberg — with actors and politicians regularly tested at work. Official case figures are certain to be vast undercounts of how widely the virus is circulating because of home testing and mildly sick not bothering to test at all…
Large indoor gatherings with masks optional have led to infections, with a high-profile party in Washington, D.C., now seen as a possible super-spreader event. Other infection clusters outside of groups that are regularly tested might go undetected, said Josh Michaud, associate director of global health policy with the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington.
“It’s harder now than it was before to know what’s happening. The future is a little fuzzier because we don’t have as much information at our fingertips,” Michaud said. “If you’re not an actor in a Broadway play or a politician you might fall through the testing cracks.”
The public health response will vary from community to community based on what’s happening locally, Michaud said.
“We’re fighting smaller fires instead of a raging blaze across the country and those smaller fires can be disruptive,” Michaud said. “It leaves everyone to choose their own adventure when it comes to pandemic response and individual behaviors.”…
D.C. health chief Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, in comments to reporters this week, has pointed to the ongoing low level of hospitalizations as proof that the vaccinations have successfully limited the severity of the illness…
“We need to remember that living with the virus does not mean forgetting about the virus. It’s still out there, it’s still causing people to get sick and some people to die,” Michaud said. “If we’re not prepared, we could be in a bad situation quickly again.”
How many ways can the CDC hurt us?
Serious breaches on airborne transmission, masks, boosters, isolation guidelines…..

Ran a panoply of errands including the monthly grocery run yesterday for the first time since Hawaii’s mask mandate was lifted. Would estimate those still masked at 50%.
Got no grief and saw no side-eye regarding my wearing one from those with newly benuded faces.

Would be of passing (if nominal) interest to see what the spike, if any, has been in lipstick sales with no masks becoming more the norm.

Well, the BA.2 wave is finally here. Including two data dumps from TX (6900 cases) and FL, which reported for the first time in two weeks (3000 cases), cases rose to 35,100. The alternate NY Times tracker, which uses a different source for States’ data, show a bottom 4 days ago at 28,300, rising to 31,000 since.
7 States are in decline including DE, GA, ID, KY, MO, NC, SD, and WV.
9 States are flat week over week including AL, AR, CO, IN, ME, MT, OK, TN, and WY.
36 Jurisdictions rising including AK, AZ, CA, CT, FL, HI, IL, IA, KS, LA, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, ND, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, and WI, plus DC and PR.
Hospitalizations declined slightly to a new 2 year low of 10,327. Deaths declined to 536.
In positive news, the BA.2 wave has peaked everywhere in Europe.
If the US follows Europe’s pattern, the wave should peak by the end of this month, and should be evident first in the Northeast. It is concerning that no States in the Northeast have peaked yet.

I had the mildly sobering thought this morning that the Sighthound Hall mob has basically decided that COVID is over. Got a cell-phone video that my brother took at a club last night (crowded, no masks) with his husband and two friends who are regulars at the Sighthound Hall entourage dinners. (They pretty much are the entourage, at this point.) The whole family is going to New York City for four days next week. And the last few times I have met my brother for lunch he hasn’t bothered to wear a mask.
I don’t quite know what to think. I realize that BA.2 cases are likely to be mild, but that is tempered by the knowledge that I am in a high(er)-risk group (age 70), and there is the still largely unknown shadow of long COVID in the background. I don’t wear a mask outdoors, still wear one when I go into a store. I don’t have any real concerns about eating at a restaurant, but I go almost exclusively at lunch and at off-peak times, so there’s little exposure. So I’m looking at the possibility that my main exposure point—while slight—is my family. Still processing this.

Look at individual areas. It seems like the counties in western Mass. are hitting some kind of peak; I just can’t tell whether it’s THE peak or just A peak. Up in Vermont the case rates whipsaw up and down, might just be small-N/low-population-density fluctuations.

My county stopped reporting its stats a couple of months ago, but they still have to give updates to the state. We were at zero new cases for a while, but have gone up to 3 = 15/100k based on our pop. Lower than when they stopped reporting. We haven’t had new hospitalizations for a while.
Right now everything is blooming and pollen counts are high. I haven’t had any symptoms that are any different from my normal allergic reactions, although they are bad enough to affect my lungs. Not really pneumonia if an anti-histamine shot fixes the problem. Not nearly so bad as it was when I was a kid, probably because there is less of what really gets to me here. Unless I really start running a fever (over 1 degree) I won’t bother to take my in-home test for Covid-19.
I assume the testing they are reporting are from contact or symptoms and the positivity is under 4%. If you can’t tell you have it, I won’t be too concerned. The potential problems from Covid-19 that might show up later – I might well be dead before they show up.

@The Moar You Know:
New case rate in my county is 30 per 100K per day, and climbing. And probably double than that compared to old numbers because rapidtests are widely available.
In my local large supermarket (like 1.5 acres?) that serves a diverse community, the masking rate is currently around 40 percent, about 60 percent with African Americans, about 30 percent with whites, Hispanic similar or maybe a bit less. The white people skew Republican, FWIW. When there was a face covering requirement, the rate was about 98+ percent.
I don’t see many N95s(I use one), some KN95s.
