3 of Our 5 Fellowships for Michigan Can Be Hired in A Couple of Weeks, Let’s Get to Work on the Last Two!

Announcing a new Balloon Juice Angel Match – Angel #5 !  For $1,000!

He will match up to $50 from each donor who lists the donation in the comments.

The zoom last night was really great!

A few highlights:

– every $5,000 from us allows them to provide one of these fellowships to members of disenfranchised groups

– they are approaching 10 different groups to let them know about the fellowships

– the plan is for the first three “fellows” to hit the ground running in 2-3 weeks ( 3 fellows @ $5k each )

– as soon as we get to $20k, they will be able to add the fourth

– and of course when we get to $25k, they can add the fifth one ( 5 fellows @ $5k each )

They are not only working to get people to sign the petition, but everyone they come into contact with for the petition can also be registered to vote on the spot using a phone, effective immediately!  If someone has moved, the registration address can be changed on the phone.

The sooner we can raise the money, the sooner the lucky fellowship peeps can get out there and get to work.

    It really feels good to be able to donate in ways that put feet on the ground to help out, instead of some nebulous “campaign fund”.

    @Xentik:  Thank you.  That’s another hundred!

    I feel the same way.  I see this: “Someone wrote this horrible thing about us, please send money”…

    … and I wonder “how is my money going to help with that?  What are you going to use it for?”

    So, yeah, boots on the ground.  Plus those boots on the ground don’t just help one candidate; when someone turns out to vote, they can vote up and down the ballot.

    This is awesome.  There’s another way I think we really helped this organization, conceptually.

    When WaterGirl approached Promote the Vote, she emphasized that we didn’t want to just dump some money into the general pot, but wanted to fund a specific project or position, like we did with Voces.

    They gave it some thought, and came up with the Fellowships, part-time hires targeted at canvassing (and registering) disenfranchised communities.  Maybe they were going to do this anyway, but I think WaterGirl helped them come up with a more creative and impactful use for our donations.

    Also, the folks behind PtV and its affiliated organizations are wonderful (and very funny, as you know if you attended the Zoom last night).

    Three cheers for the latest angel!

    One of the things that most impressed me about last yesterday’s Q&A was their comment that they are serious about paying people appropriately – particularly people who belong to groups that are often disenfranchised (i.e., the majority of Promote the Vote MI’s coalition partners). Hence the $5K for each fellowship.

    The groups in their coalition include: women, religious minorities, immigrants, disabled people, people of color, indigenous people, LGBTQIA+ people. They mentioned their Tik-Tok videos, so presumably they’re reaching out to the cohort of young voters too. :)

    @H.E.Wolf: Thanks for the list!  I wanted to include that but I was afraid I would leave too many out.  And now seeing your list, I know I would have!  :-)

    The only one I can think to add is vets.  (Not the ones who take care of dogs.)

    It’s a silly TikTok video of a woman wailing and throwing herself down on a beanbag chair with a caption that is some thing like “me when I found out that 50% of Michigan registered voters don’t vote in the midterms”. Or something like that.

    I just put some in to bring the total over $17,000.  Not sure if there is still a match going on.  (ETA it was more than $50 but I don’t remember the exact amount.  I also did the Ukraine thermometer at the same time to get it to $40,000.)
