So we’re down to 6 possible names for our group name on social media.
We’re not asking you to vote on the best one, but would love to hear which ones you like best, and why. And what you don’t like about the ones that you don’t like.
Blue Fire
Content Immoderators
Actual Citizens United
JackalPAC or JackalPack
Jackals Unshackled
WheresTheMustard
It’s best if the name conveys something about who we are to strangers who will see the name, but in a practical sense it’s simply a way to identify something as coming from our group.
Let’s hear it, what do you think?
Here’s a bonus Henry, still snuggling with his favorite friend, but looking a little sad today.
bjacques
I’ve never made blue fire, but I watched someone make it once.
Omnes Omnibus
Either of the jackal ones works for me. But is the group going to register as a PAC? If not, then maybe avoid those letters.
Scout211
@Omnes Omnibus:
Jackalpack?
Elizabelle
Jackalpack
WaterGirl
@Scout211: It started as JackalPack but then some liked JackalPAC better.
WaterGirl
@Scout211: @Elizabelle:
Are you saying you like JackalPack or just suggesting it as an alternate spelling?
WaterGirl
I’m gonna pull this until later since I see that TaMara just put up a post.
WaterGirl
Take 2!
gene108
Actual Citizens United
wetzel
Thunder Donkeys
WaterGirl
@gene108: That’s my favorite!
I think it’s a name people will notice and will remember. It says a lot about where we are coming from, and I think name recognition matters.
MomSense
I like jackalpack – PAC looks like a 501 C4 to me.
WaterGirl
@gene108: What do you like about it?
WaterGirl
@MomSense: I think that’s why the people at last night’s meeting liked it. Because of the PAC.
We truly are a political action committee, but certainly not in the way that “PAC” actually means.
Raoul Paste
Wheresthemustard is hilarious, but maybe jackalpack or blue fire is the way to go
WaterGirl
I also really like Blue Fire. Blue for obvious reasons, Fire because we are focused and a force to be reckoned with. But I just searched for Blue Fire and a lot of different things use #bluefire, so I think that one is out. sniff sniff
Gravenstone
A word of caution, inside jokes can undercut your intentions. My old EQ guild spent half our time explaining that we weren’t devotees of the “Command and Conquer” franchise despite our name evoking their publishers.
japa21
Like both BlueFire and Actual Citizens United.
Another Scott
Wasn’t it the case in olden days that hep places had 3 words in the name?? Given that was a long time ago, and so many more names are taken, we might need five now…
Blue Jackal Mountain Fire Pack
;-D
Thanks for all you folks are doing. It’s important!
Cheers,
Scott.
WaterGirl
@Gravenstone:
I share that concern. I love JackalPack and WhereIsTheMustard, but…
After reading your comment, I just googled “Jackal pack”.
Neither meaning seems like quite how we might want to represent ourselves.
I nixed BalloonCorps because I don’t want angry trolls making the connection with Balloon Juice and showing up on the blog.
What’s in a name? Turns out that there’s quite a bit!
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: 5 words today, 7 words tomorrow!
eachother
Liked Blue Fire. Also knew it was already out there too.
It was the intensity and purifying.
Robin
Jackalpack!
PST
I have an urgent dog question, so if no one minds, I will take advantage of this technically being an open thread. My 90 lb. doodle just swallowed a chicken thigh bone that slipped off the plate as I was moving dishes. The bone was well cooked and slippery, blunt at the ends. She swallowed it whole in a flash without even attempting to chew. I’m sure this is a bad thing, but I also suspect this has happened many times before. Should I treat this as a veterinary emergency and head for the animal hospital, or keep a close watch for now? Do bones dissolve in a dog’s stomach?
The Up and Up
The elder in the family likes Where’s The Mustard?
That’s how he rolls. He’s reading a book I picked up somewhere, Sit Ubu Sit.
For some reason I prefer Blue Fire. Good luck with the naming.
lashonharangue
I like Actual Citizens United but would like to suggest a slight change.
Actual Citizens-United
The hyphen acts like a comma and helps to emphasize these are regular people doing things, not an astroturf operation.
Another Scott
@eachother: How about Blow Fire?
There’s a trademark on it as a single word (related to a computer game company), but I don’t see anything as the two words separately.
Cheers,
Scott.
CliosFanBoy
The Jackal ones seem fun.
WaterGirl
@eachother: When I first searched for Blue Fire this morning the first thing that came up was a mostly naked lady whose rear end would surely make TBogg a happy man.
Blue Fire is popular enough that I don’t see that in the first few dozen matches. so there’s that.
CliosFanBoy
@PST: call the hospital and ask them. I had a dog do that and they told me to feed him lots of bread (to cushion the bone) and to watch him carefully for any pain or distress. But please do call.
Lyrebird
Okay I am the only one so far here voting for Content Immoderators,
but it’s obviously going to be hard to type.
I like “Where’s the mustard?” bc of how it claps back on the Obama slams, even though it was probably inspired by Cole.
Blue Fire is fine, Actual Citizens United is pretty great too!
WaterGirl
@PST: Short answer: I don’t know for sure.
Longer answer:
I think you should call the emergency vet immediately and ask. A thigh bone is substantial, even if not pointy, so I think this is probably a big deal that you need to address right away.
eachother
Monitor the bone eater. Was it raw? More natural. Provide water. Bet the pet enjoyed the moment.
Also, got my Balloon Juice Long Sleeve Tee Shirt. Open Thread right? Maybe not. So what. Dogs eat bones. It’s a marrow subject.
Love my Tee-shirt.
Bones break teeth. dam. Give a dog a bone. Alternatives? Got a pumpkin and kibble frozen concoction in the deep freeze. Trying to be dentally correct.
Another Scott
@PST:
The details probably matter a bit. This article gives lots of information and may help. Good luck!
Cheers,
Scott.
WaterGirl
@lashonharangue: I actually wondered a few minutes ago about:
then wondered whether you can have punctuation in a twitter name. So lazy that I haven’t looked that up yet.
WaterGirl
@eachother: I love the stream of consciousness in your comment.
Scout211
@WaterGirl:
Yes to both.
I actually prefer Jackalpack over JackalPack, too. It feels more organic, like it’s a new word made up just for this purpose.
My 2 cents.
eachother
If it catches, Blue Fire will be ours.
Alison Rose ???
I agree that while jackal names are fun for us, using something that no one outside of the blog will get doesn’t make much sense. So I would go for either Blue Fire (“Fanning the liberal flames of democracy!”) or Actual Citizens United (“Real people, real voices, real change”).
Maybe once this effort takes off and BJ becomes an actual top 10,000 blog, the lexicon will spread and we can go for jackals and mustard.
Alison Rose ???
@WaterGirl: You can only use the underscore, other than that it’s just numbers and letters, I believe.
Dangerman
Love JackalPack of those choices though sounds like a DQ from the googling.
Must (Be) Heard if nominations still open. Where’s the mustard is the secret password.
It would be a one finger (no, not that one) secret handshake.
Scout211
I wasn’t in on the previous discussion so I don’t know how this was discussed before, but Blue Fire feels oddly reminiscent of a former left leaning blog. The fire part just triggers that in me. Not feeling it.
lashonharangue
I just looked it up. Character limit for a twitter name is 15 and no spaces allowed (only underscores). so Actual Citizens United won’t work.
WaterGirl
@Dangerman:
DQ?
Alison Rose ???
@lashonharangue: RealCitizensUtd – could work. 15 exactly and same feel to it. And at least the soccer fans would recognize utd for united :)
oatler
Jackals With Hackles (dog reference?)
RaflW
Jackals United maybe (sorry it’s not on the list). I’d worry a bit that JackalPack would get shortened to JackPack and, well, that just doesn’t work great for me.
dnfree
Imoderators appears somehow misspelled, or maybe reminiscent of an Apple product?
Elizabelle
@RaflW: I like Jackals United. Good idea.
NotMax
If it must be one of those, Actual Citizens United.
Don’t cotton to any of the others at all; too in-jokey.
WaterGirl
@lashonharangue: Interesting. Okay, I read your comment and said “well, fuck!” out loud. “Interesting” was my first translation of that.
Okay, so NAMES can be longer, up to 50 characters, but i guess the @whatever is the user name and that can’t be longer than 15. So I think our name could be Actual Citizens United, and our name could be @ActualCitizens. And our hashtag could be more than 15, I believe.
MomSense will be “training” Curt (Almost Retired) and Me tomorrow night on a recorded zoom, so I will be smarter when I go to bed tomorrow night than I am right now.
WaterGirl
@dnfree: Raises hand. yes, I believe i left out an M. oops.
WaterGirl
@dnfree: haha just caught the Apple reference. If that was it, the spelling would have been iModerators. :-)
RaflW
@WaterGirl: Fascinating how deh googz returns different results for different people. All my top results refer to a Nintendo switch game with that name.
I don’t game (maybe one day a year with my niece, playing Mario Cart or this goofy dance-along game).
PST
@Scout211:
Firedoglake? Wouldn’t want to be confused with that.
Scout211
@Elizabelle:
Yes, JackalsUnited sounds good to me, too.
IMO, it’s better than using a version of Citizens United, which I really don’t think we should use in an @ address for anything representing this blog.
NotMax
Fruitless but still imagining @WePluribus to emerge as a dark horse.
WaterGirl
@PST: Oh, I shudder at the thought.
WaterGirl
@Scout211:
Can you say more about that?
PST
@Another Scott: Good article. Thank you and everyone else with thoughts. I’ve had a chance to check other sources as well now. It seems like the biggest dangers are splintering when chewed and getting stuck on the way down.
WaterGirl
@RaflW: Yeah, that’s what I am getting tonight. But this morning it was the big butt of blue fire photo for sure.
brantl
@WaterGirl: Aren’t all of us, always (unless we’re comatose)? PackOJackals
WaterGirl
@PST: If you took your dog in for an x-ray they would know the location of the bone and would likely be able to predict the likelihood of a serious issue.
They might want to keep the dog overnight so someone could keep an eye out.
I really think you should call the emergency vet and at least ask.
NotMax
@Scout211
Fair point. Actual United Citizens might come off better to the general public.
WaterGirl
@brantl: Most of us, on a good day.
But I expect to be considerably more knowledgable about twitter before I head for bed tomorrow night.
NotMax
Helluva time to choose to join Twitter.
Just sayin’.

Jackals Without Shackles?
oatler
@Scout211:
Citizens United? That is the speech of Mordor, and we do not utter it in these halls.
Scout211
@WaterGirl:
Using the phrase “Citizen’s United” in the @ address could eventually cause Twitter readers and users to associate this Twitter account with Citizen’s United, even if the word Actual is added. Using an awful SCOTUS ruling in the @address just invites that association.
This is just my opinion, though. One vote among hundreds of thousands of Jackals who are voting on this soon. ?
RaflW
Not to jinx us, but so far (at)JackalsUnited is not currently claimed on the Box-o-Twitt.
Mike E
Wut, no NakedMopping? While fun, none of these 6 seem catchy tbh.
NotMax
While it works herein for purposes of snarkage, it should be noted that jackals rarely assemble in packs and are pretty mangy carrion eaters, not necessarily a good look to cultivate.
Also they’re crepuscular (brought up only because like saying/typing that word).
bbleh
#1 or #3. All the others are WAY too clever.
Between the two, #1 has wider appeal but sounds a bit trite (which arguably is inevitable), while #3 is cooler but won’t be understood outside the community. I’d say, choice depends on how wide an appeal you want.
DougL (Formerly EmperorofIceCream)
Anyone suggest Bluejackalpac? Sounds almost like blueberry pancakes and everyone loves pancakes!
WaterGirl
@Scout211: My point up thread was that the @name would be
@ActualCitizens
not @CitizensUnited
think of it as ActualCitizensUnited
Gvg
I do not like the citizens United name and feel it would attract the wrong kind of attention. Radical republicans will think we are like them, and actual democrats would avoid us.
In fact I don’t care for any of the names, but the citizens United one is the most problematic IMO.
I seemed to have missed a discussion of WHY we are planning this?
NotMax
@bbleh
Yeah, too clever by half.
Blue Fire? What does that convey? An account promoting Sterno? If married to that coloration, would opt for something like TargetBlue.
mrmoshpotato
I like these two.
justawriter
Like the pine trees linin’ the windin’ road
I’ve got a name, I’ve got a name
Like the singin’ bird and the croakin’ toad
I’ve got a name, I’ve got a name
And I carry it with me like my daddy did
But I’m livin’ the dream that he kept hid
Yeah Jim Croce (RIP) was one of my favorites growing up a thousand years ago
CCL
@Mike E: naked mopping is my favorite!
Too bad it’s not on the list Water Girl presented.
PST
@WaterGirl: You might be right, but she seems completely herself. We walked a mile, and she’s been eating, drinking, pooping, and peeing. I think I’ll watch and wait for now rather than put her through the emergency vet routine.
eachother
@NotMax: Sterno. Ha. Fire eaters crunching Red hot coals.
prostratedragon
@WaterGirl: Oh too bad. That’s my favorite as well, but obfuscation is to be avoided.
xephyr
Jackals and Mustard are fun, but Blue Fire and Actual Citizens United are better.
John Revolta
Hot Airheads
Antonius
Blue Flame
John Cole
I like “actual citizens united.” I think that is clever.
WaterGirl
@John Revolta: Hot Airheads is fun.
Baudolino
Blue fire is good. Blue flame is better. Mispelled Imoderators less so.
Tenar Arha
I like probably in this order: JackalPack, Actual Citizens United , & even Jackals Ushackled.
JackalPAC only makes sense if we’re creating a 501c4, otherwise it’d be really confusing. Umm, I’ve been distracted, are we doing that?
Unknown known
Actual Citizens United had strong Real IRA vibes to me. But then most of you aren’t from the UK, so won’t be as relevant
AM in NC
Actual Citizens United is my favorite because it might mean something to people who don’t know Balloon Juice, it is a positive message, and it also smacks back against a conservative “victory”.
OzarkHillbilly
Hands down “WheresTheMustard”.
Angelwhine
with all that happens about here, perhaps IncontinentalCongress may be appropriate.
Motivated Seller
vote for: JackalPack
tinare
@Angelwhine: LOL!
late to the thread, but I like Actual Citizen’s United.
Sis
I’m so sorry for you and Henry.
WaterGirl
@Sis: Thank you, Sis, that’s very kind of you to care.
Paul in KY
Jackals Unshackled!
buggrit
@Paul in KY:
Citizens Untied!
gene108
@WaterGirl:
I like Actual Citizens United because (1) the name conveys a meaning “Actual Citizens” seems like a play on conservative tropes like “concerned citizens” and “Real Americans”, and (2) “Citizens United” is a nice dig at the awful SCOTUS ruling that helped usher in this age of total bugfuckery by Republicans.
WaterGirl
@gene108: It has been so helpful to read the “why” of which names people like, and which they don’t like. thank you
