Per the Washington Post:

… “Our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done,” Pelosi told Zelensky in a meeting that took place Saturday evening local time.

In a video posted by Zelensky on Sunday, Pelosi was seen walking the streets of Ukraine’s capital with other House Democratic lawmakers, including Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff (Calif.), Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory W. Meeks (N.Y.), Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern (Mass.) and Rep. Jason Crow (Colo.). Pelosi’s office said Reps. Barbara Lee (Calif.) and William R. Keating (Mass.) were also part of the delegation…

Pelosi’s delegation subsequently left Ukraine for Poland for meetings with Polish President Andrzej Duda and senior officials, according to a statement from Pelosi’s office.

The trip had not been announced before Zelensky shared visuals on Sunday, with a caption praising the United States for being a leader in support of Ukraine…

Some very good politicians — President Obama among them — find dealing with crowds of people draining. Others, like President Biden, find them energizing:

Long ago, I wrote this about Joe Biden before he vivisected Paul Ryan.
"Joe Biden actually likes all these silly performance pieces in which we insist he be engaged in order to stay vice-president. He revels in them. He would do ten of them a day, if he could."#WHCD

I still think the whole idea of the WHCD becoming this mass spectacle is dumb. But if it’s gonna happen, Noah was a fantastic choice. He’s willing to land punches with his humor. And Joe did well too.

I’m going to have to go and watch all of these…well ok, just Biden and Noah.

Btw the NYT has a huge three-part piece up about how Tucker Carlson’s essentially a radical right nationalist mouthpiece.  (Others may have already mentioned this – my bad)  The first part, “How Tucker Carlson Stoked White Fear to Conquer Cable” is sooooo on-point it’s kind of unbelievable.  May our snooze media feel free now, finally, to expose all of these kkklowns for what they truly are.

He’s helped you sell your papers and your books and your TV. You helped create this monster, and now you’re profiting off of him. Muslims in Malaysia are panicking, per local media: the Keeper of the Great Seal of the Malay Rulers (i.e. their official spokesman, not a zoo employee) has announced that the 1st of Shawal — that is, Eid al-Fitri, shall fall on Monday, 2nd May. Not Tuesday, like everyone was expecting. This will be the first Eid since 2019 largely free of Covid-19 restrictions. Most were planning on Monday as their final day of Eid prep, reserved for cooking the rendang and ketupat and other delicacies that take literally all day to prepare.

@sab: Okay, let’s give her the benefit of the doubt.  Either way, you are not helpless here.

I see 5 options so far: 1) ask if she has a friend  who could store the chairs for a little while,

    2) ask if she has a NEIGHBOR who might be able to store the chairs for a little while.  My neighbor kept my family mirror and a few other key things in the corner of a room for 6 months during my house repairs when the huge tree fell on the house.  Sometimes, for some inexplicable reason, neighbors sometimes step in when even friends do not.

    3) ask if there’s a  jackal who could pick up the chairs and store them for a bit.  Offer to pay for gas.

    4) have your sister ask the movers to drop the chairs off at a storage place.  This is not the first time in the history of moving that the need for short-term storage has come up.

    5) if your sister refuses to ask the movers to do that, I bet there’s some mom-and-pop moving company or “two guys and a truck” who could pick these up from your sisters and store them for a few days  OR drop them off at storage.

This is exactly the type of lazy article from the Woke Class that only makes them more isolated and out of touch from the rest of America. There is zero effort to explore the reality behind Tucker’s critique of the current policy consensus.

There is now a “woke class”. Anti-wokeism is endless. They just return to it compulsively and mine it over and over again in response to every issue.
An elaborate 3 part NYTimes series on Tucker Carlson where they interviewed hundreds of people and reviewed 1000 of his shows?
    Dismissed as “woke”.
They hit the “woke” lever and got a little pellet as a reward and now they can’t stop hitting it.
It is all these people talk about and write about.
This anti-wokist is on the Right but it doesn’t matter- Right, Center, Left- it’s all the same commentary. Indistinguishable. There is no ideology of anti -wokeness other than anti-wokeness.

If “woke” surrendered, just threw up their hands and agreed to stop talking about “equity” or “racist history” or bias in the workplace and education, where would the anti-wokes go? Where do they land? Because they’re not “populists”- most of them are super-educated, higher income media people. I mean, some are allegedly on the Left but they do no advocacy or writing on Leftist positions- they cover The Woke.

They land on “Mitt Romney”. They’ll just be standard moderate Republicans without this hook this gimmick, that (allegedly) makes them “interesting contrarians”.

Tucker has no “critique of the current policy consensus”. He rants about immigrants. Every single Republican rants about immigrants. Immigrants are SUCH a popular punching bag that no one even talks about immigration legislation anymore. It’s in the “impossible” category. The immigration “policy consensus” on the Right is identical to Tucker Carlson.

Ben Shapiro goes to college campuses to debate not a person or a policy, but “wokeness”. He’s opposed!

You just wonder how long they can beat this fucking thing before they have to weigh in on something real, like “immigration” or “abortion” or “labor unions”. Doesn’t the United Anti-Woke front break down when they realize it’s Ben Shapiro so it’s just going to be standard conservative Republican boilerplate without the “woke” issue overlaid on top of it?

“Wokeness” aside (and I can’t believe I even said that, given that wokeness is the most vital issue facing our country) Ben Shapiro still intends to criminalize abortion, eradicate labor unions,  abolish public schools, and gut all regulations. Strange bedfellows indeed.

I know how this ends. The “progressives” in the antiwoke coalition get their asses kicked by the conservatives and as soon as it is no longer convenient for the Right to have them as allies, they get kicked to the curb. Then it’s just conservatism.

But you can make decisions that will allow the chairs to be with the table and not in a landfill.  Just because she is your sister, with a history of this crap, it does not mean that the chairs go into a landfill, or to her friend or somewhere else.  Maybe she has someone who wants to buy them?

The same thing happened when “progressives” worked with Republicans against public schools. It started out that it was going to be this great coming together across Party lines, all working against the “failing” public schools. The minute the Right got some power in this coalition it ended up as “abolish public schools and all teachers are pedophiles”. They just trounced their former progressive allies. There’s no “progressive” ideas or policy  remaining in the “alliance”. The Right kicked them to the curb as soon as they were no longer politically useful. Christoper Rufo is now the spokesperson for the former “progressive and conservative alliance against public schools”. The progressives were the useful idiots who helped it along and now there’s nothing “progressive” remaining.

I suspect that like other words white people appropriate it has come out of usage among Black people. Now the word probably has been used by white conservatives ten times as much as it ever was by the people who originated it. As an avid reader of the Anti Woke Coalition musings on wokeness, it’s now much, much broader than AA wokeness. A huge part of it is blowback from “me too” – the sexual harrassment/assault cases against famous and powerful men.

When the NYTimes did their most recent focus group with conservative men they all expressed sympathy for Andrew Cuomo. The Woke got Cuomo. Don’t underestimate the blowback on that front. BLM freaked them the hell out but wildly powerful and/or rich men losing their jobs due to workplace behavior towards women also contributes to this.

I don’t know why it doesn’t get more attention. A large group of powerful men suffered real repercussions from their workplace behavior – people who had gotten away with it for decades. And that was just the high profile ones- sexual harrassment and assault in the workplace results in lawsuits, with damages, so tens of millions of men were told by their employers that they had to change how the behaved at work. Not because their employers give a shit about “equity” but because their employers recognize the behavior is occuring and can be litigated.

There was, predictably, blowback, which was quietly rolled into the ever-expanding “woke” category.

I think Cuomo could win on a GOP ticket in NY as another vicitim of The Woke. His god-given right to grope the women he works with has been infringed. It’s really a liberty issue, if you think about it.

@James E Powell: Some people attribute George Allen’s narrow loss to Jim Webb in the 2006 Virginia Senate election to his “Macacca moment,” when he threw a racial slur at an Indian American man filming him for the Webb campaign. But if this did hurt Allen, it would be an exception tending to prove a rule.

At the time I read that “Macacca” was a derogatory term French Algerians called native Algerians. George Allen’s mother was French Algerian. When he got a lot of questions about this controversial incident. Allen wouldn’t say he learned the slur from his mom. Instead, he said he’d made it up on the spot.

You know what? I’m starting to think I’m willing to go to the mattresses on ‘woke’. The right did the same thing a generation ago to ‘politically correct’, took a term that the left used as a positive and turned it into a slur. I didn’t mind so much then, because ‘politically correct’ always had a rather smug and judgy tone to it. But ‘woke’ is a short and simple way to say ‘compassionate and inclusive, and understanding that our society hasn’t always lived up to its own ideals in compassion and inclusion’, and dammit, that’s a GOOD thing! I’m not going to let them slurrify ‘woke’! I’m woke! Probably everyone here is woke! We’re the Woke Mob!

I hadn’t known that ‘woke’ was originally a term from the black community, but the time I really saw it in use, maybe the first time I noticed the term, was during those huge demonstrations after the George Floyd killing, and how multi-racial and multi-generational they were. It was the moment when thousands, maybe millions, of white people suddenly said, “Hey, when the black folks have been saying all this time that the police treat them differently than they do us – turns out they’re right!”

@James E Powell: I’ve always thought that if George Allen had been reelected Senator he would have beaten out John McCain for the 2008 Presidential nomination. I think Barack Obama would have beaten Allen, but it would have been a nasty campaign. Allen was a bully and Republicans would have responded to him better than they did to McCain.

Allen lost to Webb in 2006 by less than 9,000 votes. Allen’s bullying nature was his undoing. His “Macaca moment” occurred in Southwest Virginia in front of a white audience. He called the videographer the slur, then asked the crowd to “welcome Macaca to America.”

Ironically, Mr. Sidarth had been born and raised in Fairfax County, and Allen was college age when his father moved to Virginia to manage Washington’s football team. Allen glommed right onto the state’s  worse traditions though, and was already trying to live down his notorious display of the Confederate flag while in collge when he stepped in it at the campaign rally.

@Geminid: Counterfactuals are fun.  But Allen was doomed.  Not least because he was a notorious racist, and open about it. He was also a bald-faced liar, and bad at it.FTFNYT from 2006:

The first occurred at a campaign appearance where Mr. Allen called a young Democratic operative of Indian descent “macaca” and welcomed him “to America.” Liberals called the term a racist slur derived from the name of a type of monkey. Mr. Allen apologized for any offense and said he had simply made up the word.

A few weeks later Mr. Allen, who is Presbyterian, grew angry at a reporter’s question about whether his mother had been born Jewish. Mr. Allen later said that after the question came up, his mother told him for the first time that her family was indeed Jewish. His subsequent statements about the matter — attesting that he still ate ham sandwiches, for example — appeared awkward, even to fellow Republicans.

“His mishandling of a name-calling incident, and his ham-handed denial and subsequent revelation that his mother was raised Jewish, have almost eliminated him from the field of serious presidential candidates and even jeopardized his Senate seat,” Matthew Continetti of the conservative Weekly Standard wrote in the magazine’s current cover story, “George Allen Monkeys Around.”

    “ham-handed” – [ golf clap ]

    Cheers,

Allen would have appealed to the many Republicans who were lukewarm about McCain and Romney but enthusiastic about Trump. I think Obama still would have beaten Allen but the campaign would have been nasty.
