Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Ron DeSantis, the grand wizard, oops, governor of FL.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Not all heroes wear capes.

with the Kraken taking a plea, the Cheese stands alone.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

No Justins, No Peace

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Everybody saw this coming.

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

After last night’s shitshow, this is going to be a monster fundraising cycle for Democrats. We hit our goals for the awesome boots-on-the-ground stuff Watergirl found but let’s blow it out today. I might add some conventional fundraising for candidates later but I want to shoot you straight and tell you I don’t think there’s a better place than the places Watergirl found.

Update: Here’s we want to raise right now

Why no love for NC? Open Senate seat!

Although I’m sure there’s plenty of love for NC (UNCSA summer programs alum here!), Balloon Juice is currently focused on fundraising for a variety of Get Out The Vote organizations, many of them founded and run by people of color.

If you know of a reputable GOTV group in NC, ideally one that prioritizes voter enfranchisement for people of color, please let WaterGirl know so that it can go on the list of organizations to be considered. Community organizing is powerful!

    Also,

Here is an excellent Google document with links for donations to support abortion access/protection, in every state.

Doug and i have been playing phone tag so neither is up to date on what the other one is up to.

I have already contacted Voces and they know exactly what they could do with another $15k or $25 from us, and they are already looking for possible matches.

Voces would use the money to hire more relational organizers.  Remember, in 2020 even without our help, they turned out more votes than the margin of error in 2020.  This is exactly the kind of group that will impact the outcome in November 2022.

Planned Parenthood is crazy important, and they will get zillions of dollars, and they won’t be able to change this outcome in the short term.

Our best shot is to keep the House and add to seats in the Senate and get good folks into the statehouses.  So that’s the most strategic thing we can do with our outrage, our anger, our frustration at what is happening to our democracy.

@UncleEbeneezer: Here is an excellent Google document with links for donations to support abortion access/protection, in every state.

Those matter so much, in cases like these, and for reasons most of us will never see.

A good reminder of why, that I found on Twitter:

There is grassroots strategy for abortion access. It’s led by activists on the ground, like abortion funders and clinic escorts. The problem is: it’s not sexy political work. It’s tedious, day-to-day work. It’s a lot harder than just saying “Save Roe!” It requires commitment.

I also understand that the grassroots abortion access work that has been happening for decades is largely unseen by the general public, and that’s not because we don’t want you to see it. It’s because abortion stigma relegates this kind of work to the sidelines.

@KayInMD (formerly Kay (not the front-pager)):

Voces is in the process of contacting the person who matched us in 2021 for the other half of the field organizing position.  They are also reaching out to another partner organization to see if they might match us.

So no promises, but they are working on a double-match for us.  So if you donate now and they find a match, it will be matched.

@Felanius Kootea: We have to play the long game here because the solution to abortion rights – women’s rights to control our own bodies – is now going to have to be in the legislative arena.

And for that we need the House, the Senate, and as many statehouses as we can muster.

In for 50$   More to come including some shoe leather, or equivalent.  Hoping that at least a POWERFUL counter argument to the  ‘Why bother voting’  notion has been permanently created.  Maybe that is a general effect of the way the Supreme Court is such a nakedly political body now.

Please make a BJ Freedom Fund that supports local pro abortion orgs. Help children raped by their fathers or poor people type orgs.

Divvy up funds ro orgs like these: https://www.thecut.com/article/donate-abortion-fund-roe-v-wade-how-to-help.html

Or any that you and WaterGirl want to add.

@MazeDancer: It’s a very good idea, and I only say this to level-set expectations:

As someone who contributes monthly to a few of those funds, some don’t use ActBlue. So the crew here would have to create something from ground-up, and possibly across a host of funding systems. That would be…challenging, I suspect.
