India’s main opposition Congress party on Friday demanded a hefty rise in compensation for the families of those who died of COVID-19, after the World Health Organization estimated the country’s toll was nearly 10 times the reported figure.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has rejected the WHO estimate released on Thursday that 4.7 million people died in India as a result of the pandemic until last year, when hospitals ran out of oxygen and beds due to a record wave driven by the Delta variant.
India has reported only 524,002 COVID-19 deaths – the most after the United States and Brazil – with more than 43 million infections. Actual infections are believed to be in the hundreds of millions in the country of 1.35 billion people.
“Science doesn’t LIE. Modi does,” Congress’s second-in-command, Rahul Gandhi, said on Twitter, citing the WHO report. “Respect families who have lost loved ones.”
He asked the government to compensate the families of each person dying of COVID with 400,000 rupees ($5,213). The government currently gives 50,000 once deaths are confirmed to be from COVID…
Some Indian states, nevertheless, have agreed to compensate more families than their official tally suggests.
Modi’s home state of Gujarat, for example, has recorded around 11,000 COVID fatalities since the start of the pandemic but has approved at least 87,000 compensation claims.

… In Pfizer’s clinical trials, about 5.6 percent of patients reported an “altered sense of taste,” called dysgeusia in the medical literature…
Still, everyone I spoke with who had experienced Paxlovid Mouth said they’d take the drug again if they were reinfected and had another bout of COVID. “It’s a hell of a lot better than a ventilator,” Wright said. She’s immunocompromised, and has taken her fair share of medicines throughout her life. “It’s not my first encounter with a medication that leaves kind of a taste in your mouth,” she told me. “But I’ve never experienced anything this extreme. We still have to deal with human nature in the 21st century, and we haven’t evolved that much after all.

We had our last covid test this morning before returning to the US tomorrow. We’ve been spitting in a test tube every morning (Who knew 2 ml of spit could be so hard to produce?). But today we had to do our own nasal swab under supervision. I’m coming down with what feels like a cold and was afraid I’d test positive for covid, but that didn’t happen, thank god. They’d have put me up in a hotel until I tested negative for enough days. I’m ready to go home.
ETA: In both Holland and France, no one on the streets was wearing masks.
Jesse
@satby: Exactly. Also, too, what’s the proposed solution? It’s easy to say “this shouldn’t happen”. I feel the same way. Some possible improvements are under our control (many places are doing wastewater surveillance, for example). Others are in principle under our control but not really, such as education (to the long list of glaring problems in the US made burningly clear by the pandemic, let me add a depressingly widespread low level of education in basic science). Some things aren’t under our control. As you say, presumably these are things have to do with human nature. Saying that might sound like a cop out, but I really think you just can’t really make people do or understand some things, not 100% anyway.
I might add that “I don’t understand how that’s possible in the 21st century” is a kind of excuse I sometimes hear in Germany, too. Example: can’t get certain drugs at the pharmacy. Pharmacist: “This shouldn’t be possible here.” Answer: open your eyes: the German insurance system is based on deeply tighwad thinking. Of course all sorts of things aren’t going to be available in such a setting that “should” be available.
Jesse
@satby: It is possible in the 21st century. Just look at the level of testing that gets done in various Asian countries (thinking mainly of China and Vietnam). Mass random testing. There you go. It *is* possible.
But is that what she wants? Even when numbers are really low? (Yes I realize the problem where low numbers might just be a sign of decreased testing and little measure of the actual presence/absence of the virus.) For how long? Who pays for that? How much of a pay cut are we willing to take to ensure, e.g., that we have mass testing (possibly every day)?
New Deal democrat
The 7 days average of cases in the US rose to 69,200, an increase of over 25% from one week ago. Hospital admissions rose to 16,627. Deaths were flat at 602.
There is no sign of any deceleration in new cases in either bellwether State of NY or NJ.
Globally the US and South Africa are the two bellwethers for new variants, so there is nowhere else to look for guidance. About the only hopeful news is that cases have continued to go down in the areas of upstate NYS where BA.2.12.1 was first spotted.

We are more than 2 years into this pandemic and people are still wearing their masks under their nose. They made an attempt but haven’t learned how to wear it properly. I don’t know why this bugs me so much. Maybe we need PSAs showing people how to put a mask on.

@SiubhanDuinne: pretty much the trifecta: racist, anti-science, greedy. Expat MAGAs???

@Dorothy A. Winsor: I had to do that for one of those Ancestry DNA tests, and I was surprised how hard it was to do when I couldn’t drink any water to stimulate saliva. I’m glad you didn’t have Covid and can’t wait to hear about your trip! Those river cruises are fantastic, aren’t they?
satby
@VOR: They know. Christ, THEY DON’T WANT TO!
Soprano2
@VOR: It shocks me to see people voluntarily wearing masks doing it wrong! At this point here everyone who is wearing a mask outside of a healthcare setting is doing it voluntarily, yet I still see masks below the nose. Why????????
Soprano2
@satby: Then how do you explain the ones who are doing it voluntarily (because there have been no mandates here for almost a year) and still do it wrong? That’s a mystery to me.
satby
@Soprano2: They’re doing it because someone wants them to (usually a family member) so it’s their little passive resistant display because “they caaaan’t breeeaaathe!!!”
I’ve worked throughout this entire pandemic facing the public (and at the doctor’s office) enforcing proper mask wear or refusing service if they don’t and that’s always the excuse. Always. They’re just too cowardly to go for open opposition. Edit, and after I make them wear it correctly, they try to sneak it back down as soon as they think I won’t notice. Which brings me back to my original comment on this thread. Or to be more clear: People are assholes.
Soprano2
@satby: True, but sometimes I see people who are by themselves and doing it wrong, like at WalMart. Those are a complete mystery to me. But yeah, for most of them it was a form of passive resistance. That’s one thing about N-95 type masks, it’s really hard to wear them wrong.
lowtechcyclist
I wouldn’t mind so much if they’d be assholes in ways that didn’t threaten the lives and health of other people.
If they want to tell me my taste in clothing sucks and where did I get that haircut anyway, that may get under my skin but that’s the only consequence. Why can’t they stick to being assholes about shit like that, shit that isn’t life or death?
satby
@Soprano2: then ask them. And come back and tell us what they say. Occam’s razor: you’re going to hear some variation of what I just told you. Even alone, if they think it makes them look less MAGA cultist because they’re wearing a mask but they really don’t want to, that’s what they do. I have two fucking years+ of personal anecdata to back me up.
satby
@lowtechcyclist: jesus, it’s like you’ve never met “people” at all. You know, the ones who run a yellow-turning-red light, smoke around babies, drive drunk, oppose vaccines, drink 32 oz Big Gulps of pop while diabetic, sit on their asses while obese (me, IRL), etc. People. Very few of us will win gold stars for consistency of altruism IRL.
Soprano2
@satby: Oh, I totally believe you, living in a MAGA hellhole like I do I’ve heard all the excuses and crap about masks. Hell, some anonymous employee complained to HR about the “hostility” of the Covid cartoons I had on my door; I had to move them inside my office, so I cut several snowflakes and taped them where the cartoons used to be.
YY_Sima Qian
@Doug R: The relatively low vaccine uptake affects the rates of serious/critical/mortal cases, not so much transmission. Shanghai’s major mistake was failure to conduct wide area mass screenings to uncover cryptic community spread, & then locking down far too late.

This doesn’t look good but I’m hoping we’re peaking or the better weather expected here brings cases down.

Here in Chicago the official infection rate is higher than it ever was during the delta surge, and due to home tests, the real case count must be much higher. I read most of that tweet thread and the answers were interesting.
First, in that area some stated that is a low price, likely not ligit.
Second, it is of course racist and Canada has a law against that, as we do here. Doesn’t stop the haters of course but still illegal.
Third, many said “Just lie.” A person of color might not be able to get away with that of course but then maybe they know the right language and could fake it.
Fourth, many from Canada said it was very likely fake.

Folks, there are many jobs that required a mask other than healthcare.
I used to machine beryllium copper, which is a carcinogen and had the government in my shop and we had to wear monitors on one occasion to insure that we weren’t inhaling the manufacturing dust. N95 masks all around. For some parts of the process we had to grind the metal, which creates fine dust, the worst case. Spray painters wear masks. I wore a gas mask during certain duties in the navy. This concept that masks are some concept to suppress the intake of air is, as we all here understand is complete and utter bullshit, by people who are so ignorant that they are willing to die and kill others for their freedumb to remain completely fucking ignorant. Thank you right wing politics for that.

@SiubhanDuinne:
in BC, rental scams are common across all sites. When you are looking to rent, the first thing you do is take the address, and enter it into the Real Estate Boards Multiple Listing Service.
About half of the places listed for rent on the various sites, ( some sites are better at playing “whack a mole” than others), are scams.
The scammers take a MLS listing of a property “for sale”, strip and swap info, post it on a rental site, ( often including the video walk through). They vary on pricing from “great deal” to “normal pricing”. The “owner” renting the property always has “reasons”, some actually have a stolen key to do a “walk through”, take first month, last month, damage deposit, online or in cash, then disappear. The renter then discovers the didn’t rent anything.
So, what better way to have the gullible self select for being scammed than adding “anti-vax Racist preferred” to the scam rental listing?
