Excited that this is out, but super-bummed the it is not available anywhere without ads.
After this week / month / year I could use some compelling TV distraction!
But with ads? Tivo has spoiled me. First time ever using the word blech.
Open thread.
WaterGirl
Has anyone watched this yet?
NeenerNeener
I watched all the episodes that were available last week. I don’t remember there being as many ads as in regular network tv, maybe a minute of ads instead of a solid 3 minutes.
It was classic Bosch, except that Bosch is now a PI, Maddie is a cop-in-training and we don’t see Crate and Barrel until episode 4.
feebog
The ads are minimal and the Series is just as good as the original.
WaterGirl
@NeenerNeener: @feebog:
That’s great to hear about the ads being minimal.
Do you just find it through Amazon Prime?
WaterGirl
@NeenerNeener: Are all the episodes out already? I saw something about one being released every Friday, and I was confused.
NeenerNeener
@WaterGirl: You need the IMDB app, which is now called Freevee.
They released the first 4 episodes already and the rest are coming out on consecutive Fridays.
TaMara
IMDB ads are pretty unobtrusive. YMMV
WaterGirl
@TaMara: This is on Free-something streaming. Is that another name for IMDB?
TaMara
@WaterGirl: Yes they just changed it.
WaterGirl
@NeenerNeener: That sucks. I can’t do apps on my Apple TV. So it doesn’t show up under Amazon Prime like Brit Box does, even though it’s its own channel?
edit: off to investigate.
TaMara
Just a note, if you’re watching IMDB anyway, check out Dramaworld. 10-minute episodes that are quirky and fun. And the cast is excellent.
TaMara
@WaterGirl: it shows up in my prime…still IMDB with ads, but you can play on Amazon if you have that.
Bosch on Prime
NeenerNeener
Freevee shows up in the “Your Channels” section of Amazon Prime on my Roku, so maybe it will be on Apple TV too.
NotMax
Also note that Freevee is carrying Corner Gas. Both the live action version (A+ for sarcasm/snarkage) and the lesser animated series.
JPL
@TaMara: That’s how I found it, and since I don’t have cable, the ads didn’t bother me at all. Definitely less intrusive than network tv
Two more episodes will drop on Friday.
WaterGirl
@TaMara: @NeenerNeener:
Okay, yay, it looks like I can watch directly through Prime on my Apple TV. thanks
WaterGirl
FYI, if you tried to reload and got an error, that was me, not the site.
Mike in NC
Bosch: Legacy is pretty good. Didn’t expect his daughter to be a wannabe cop.
On the other hand, we decided to pass on more episodes of We Own This City because every character is unlikable: police thugs, drug dealers, gang bangers, etc. Just too much of a downer.
NeenerNeener
@WaterGirl: Have fun! And when you finish that, Leverage and Leverage, Redemption are also on Freevee.
WaterGirl
@NeenerNeener: Is that a second season of Leverage: Redemption? Or the first season? (which I have already watched)
WaterGirl
@Mike in NC: I have to like and relate to at least one character on a show or I just can’t seem to watch it.

I am totally cool with ads if the service is either “free” or cheap. It is getting impossible to own all the streaming services (I do not do Apple, Paramount or HBO) and if I can watch MAD MAN on Freevee by sitting through a handful of Geico ads, that is a small price to pay.
My real indulgence is subscribing to Netflix’s still-existing DVD service, and that is where I catch up on HBO and other series once they have been released to DVD. Apple, though, keeps a tight hold on its property and I had to wait almost two years to see the last Sofia Coppola film.
I am concerned I might have to break down to see the Scorsese film this year….
TaMara
Since we’re talking streaming. Netflix goes away for me at the end of the month and I’m trying to decide what to stream in June. Julia on HBO looks good. Anyone have Paramount – anything good on there to entice me to subscribe for a month?
What else am I missing? How about Apple+? What is good there?
I’ve decided I’m going for monthly streaming for a while. I’ve had Netflix since DVDs, and Hulu since it was free – I let it go in Feb.
I’ve done monthly streams of Disney, Acorn and HBO (and of course Amazon when they beg me to try it for a month, LOL). A month usually gets me caught up on good stuff. Don’t know why I was hanging on to Netflix and Hulu for so long.
WaterGirl
@TaMara: That’s a really interesting idea. I am paying for HBO but I rarely watch it. Although most regular TV will go away for the summer, so that’s good streaming time.
FelonyGovt
Is this different from the season that showed on Amazon Prime not too long ago?
TaMara
Inject into my veins. Also, love how he continues despite getting gaveled
Kent
So is Bosh really that good?
I watched a couple of episodes long ago when it first came out and didn’t really get into it at the time. But I’m willing to give it another chance if it is worth the commitment.
WaterGirl
@FelonyGovt: Yes! Bosch ended after Season 7.
Bosch now appears to be a P.I. and his daughter is now a cop.
Can’t wait to watch it.
LAO
@TaMara: I’m fairly strange so take my recommendations with a large grain of salt but I was totally obsessed with wecrashed on Apple TV. OMG, I can not believe that Adam wasn’t prosecuted for fraud. These people were insane grifters.
WaterGirl
@TaMara: I saw that earlier and loved it so much that I have a post based on that tweet – set for tomorrow morning.
Everyone should see that speech!
WaterGirl
@Kent: I LOVED Bosch. It’s the first show that I have ever truly binge watched.
NotMax
Bosch just never did click with me. Watchable enough but personally wouldn’t go out of my way to do so unless the video larder is scanty.

@NotMax: I enjoyed the episodes of Bosch that I watched but it didn’t really grab me.
I thought it to be marginally well done Copaganda.
VOR
@WaterGirl: Yes, there was a season 2 of Leverage: Redemption. I apologize, this is incorrect. Season 2 was approved, but so far Part 1 and Part 2 of Season 1 are what is available. Each part was 8 episodes. I had confused Part 2 with Season 2.
I’ve not read the Bosch novels, but my understanding is he does leave LAPD and become a PI in at least some of the novels.
susanna
I didn’t stay with Bosch series. After reading the books, always pictured Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) as Bosch, so chose to give up one.
The Lodger
@TaMara: Hakeem sees a Speaker job opening up, and I am all for that.
VOR
@VOR: My bad, a second season of Leverage: Redemption was approved, but what has been released so far is part 1 and part 2 of Season 1. Each part is 8 episodes.
Steeplejack
@VOR:
I read all of the Bosch novels, but it has been a while. At some point Bosch takes early retirement or some sort of emeritus status. He also “crosses over” to do a case or two with Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer.
FelonyGovt
@WaterGirl: Yay! I loved Bosch. The scenes of LA, and I think Titus Welliver was perfectly cast.
espierce
@Steeplejack: Michael Connolly has been executive producer and consultant on the series since it’s inception, so the Prime series stays close to Connolly’s writing.
Slow Horses on AppleTV+ is another excellent novels to screen adaptation.
eta: Netflix to Prime
They Call Me Blue
@WaterGirl: I’ve watched the first four episodes. The ad breaks are pretty short so not too obtrusive.
zhena gogolia
About to go to bed, but we’re enjoying Operation Mincemeat on Netflix. Firth, McFadyen, Penelope Wilton, Alex Jennings, a host of other British favorites.
And Johnny Flynn!
Seanly
@NeenerNeener:
I had watched the first season of Bosch & got my wife hooked into it when rewatching S1 before S2 launched.
We were on vacation (20th wedding anniversary 2 years delayed) and watched the 4 current episodes the day after we got back..
Never read the books, but loved the show. I am liking the new
seasonshow….but I miss the other detectives (good to see Crate & Barrel though) and it seems the production value is maybe a little lower.
Seanly
@VOR:
Very glad that Redemption got brought back with John Rodgers as one of the showrunners (IIRC?). Looking forward to a second season.
Scout211
@TaMara:
I don’t subscribe to Apple TV+ but my sister raved about Pachinko, adapted from the the book we both loved.
It has been renewed for a second.

With all due respect, y’all are freaking addicted to teevee. I have no idea how many hours a day you can devote to this but frankly, my ass just cannot sit itself down in a chair for very long before I get sciatica issues. And how do you navigate the breadth of the offerings? I’m overwhelmed.
I remember when the exchange for pay TV was freedom from advertisement. Now Netflix is charging like $15/month and BECAUSE THEY ARE LOSING MONEY, soon I’ll get inundated with ads. Of course they are just the latest in this trend.
Fucking marks, that’s what I feel like whenever I turn on the teevee.
NotMax
@Sure Lurkalot
It’s a form of entertainment, as are movies, as are books, as is music, as is the theater. Makes it neither good nor bad, that judgment lies with the consumer.
Too, one need not be glued to the screen. It can be one kind of inanimate colleague to only occasionally peek at and mostly listen (or half-listen) to when doing other stuff, such as puttering around in the kitchen.
Eric K
@WaterGirl: you can access it through Amazon prime too, Freevee shows up as one of your channels
Eric K
@Kent: you gotta give Bosch time to world build. It’s your basic rebellious cop who has a moral compass so gets in trouble when he won’t compromise, but all stories are basically variations on a few themes. What makes Bosch great are the performances, just a great cast all around, and they don’t skimp on character development, the political ambitious chief isn’t just a cliched character he gets depth, and so on for most of the recurring characters.
Eric K
@susanna: yeah Robert Forster would have been amazing as Bosch, unfortunately they would have needed to make it about 20 years ago for that.
trnc
@WaterGirl: I watched the first episode last night. Looking forward to more.
VBKim
We have watched 3 episodes and it hits all the great Bosch notes; the fabulous parts and the seedy parts of LA, Titus Welliver’s excellent portrayal, good scripts, bad, bad, bad guys plus Detectives Moore and Johnson. There are commercials but nothing like regular commercial TV.
WaterGirl
I think the new Bosch show might have to be my weekend treat!
