That graphic about effectiveness of boosters in Switzerland: it shows that vaxx’d & boosted is way better than unvaccinated. But the same graphic also shows that vaxx’d & unboosted, amazingly, is even better vaxx’d & boosted. So the same data could be used in an argument against boosting.
Baud

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 3,321 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, for a cumulative reported total of 4,467,061 cases. It also reported eight deaths for an adjusted cumulative total of 35,598 deaths – 0.80% of the cumulative reported total, 0.76% of resolved cases.
There were 24,850 active cases yesterday, 1,897 more than the day before. 1,373 are in hospital. 59 confirmed cases are in ICU; of these patients, 34 confirmed cases cases are on ventilators. Meanwhile, 1,416 more patients have recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,406,613 patients recovered – 98.6% of the cumulative reported total.
3,311 new cases reported yesterday were local infections. 10 new cases were imported.
The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) administered 29,791 doses of vaccine on 11th May: 12,393 first doses, 14,168 second doses, and 3,230 booster doses. The cumulative total is 70,510,766 doses administered: 27,824,090 first doses, 26,846,782 second doses, and 16,053,311 booster doses. 85.2% of the population have received their first dose, 82.2% their second dose, and 49.2% their booster dose.

Regarding the unanalyzed, unappreciated success of the Japanese approach: I’m reminded of an article in the Washington Monthly on the overall relative success in Sweden, another place that, by and large, received overwhelmingly negative coverage, even in Europe (and even by Sweden’s neighbors).
Jesse
@Baud: If there are very few vaxx’d and unboosted people, it might actually be possible. But yeah, it seems weird. Maybe the graph is mislabeled.
Matt McIrvin
@Baud: If I had to guess I’d say it’s a random small-number thing. Chise suggests that it has to do with seniors being more likely to get boosters. The data are apparently age-standardized but if a younger unboosted group had zero deaths, no rescaling is going to turn that into nonzero deaths. I certainly haven’t seen any other indications from any other study that boosters would have negative effectiveness.

Still dreading reporting for jury duty on Monday. What timing.

Cases nationwide increased to 85,600, a 30% increase week over week. Hospital admissions increased to 19,731, an increase of over 20% from one week before, but still below all points during the pandemic except for June and July of last year. Deaths decreased to 351, the lowest level since May 2, before NC’s data dump. Deaths can be expected to be over 1,000 one month from now.
Cases are up in virtually every State. The exceptions are ND, PA, and VT. NH is up by about 8%.
In the bellwethers, cases in PR are up 12% compared with one week earlier, compared with an increase of almost 25% one week earlier. Cases in NJ are up 30% for the week, compared with a 25% increase the prior week. Cases in NY are up over 25% for the week, vs. up 20% the week before. Within NY, all Upstate areas except for Albany and Buffalo are flat or down vs. one week earlier. NY’s increase is almost entirely due to the NYC area. In the Central NY region, where BA.2.12.1 was first identified, cases are now down almost 30% from their peak 25 days ago, but still up 22% from their Omicron low on March 9. One of the above 3 jurisdictions should be the first to peak.
The current wave is likely a combination of BA.2.12.1, which apparently is nearly as infectious as measles, plus waning resistance from past infections due to the passage of time.

589 new cases reported yesterday. We seem to have plateaued at an awfully high level.
My contractor just called and said his kid is sick so he won’t be coming over today. Since said kid’s symptoms include a headache I suspect she has COVID, so he probably does too. And since he was here for two days I expect I’ll start showing symptoms soon as well.
Jesse
@lowtechcyclist Good point. The article is mainly a compare-and-contrast between Sweden and the US (insofar as you can say that the US had a single response to the pandemic, which is only half true given that different states started pursuing different paths fairly early on).
kalakal
Had a booster yesterday.
That now makes 2 Novavax, 2 Pfiser and, being a completist, 1 Moderna.
Sore arm & mildly under the weather, nothing terrible.
Jesse
@kalakal: 5 shots?!
Tazj
@NeenerNeener: Oh dear, I really hope you don’t get it or if you do it’s very mild.
I live in Erie County in NY and I see that we have been steady at over 600 cases a day for a few weeks now. It went down to about 450-500 for a couple days and I thought we had peaked but no back up again. One good thing is that I don’t think hospitalizations have increased a lot for now.
It’s strange I don’t know what’s driving things here. Is it that the weather hasn’t been really nice until this week? Are elementary school kids bringing it home to their families? That’s what happened in my nephew’s house, and I’m glad they recovered quickly. My kids are older and we went through so many viruses in the fall and winter. I think my oldest son had 5 PCR tests in addition to numerous rapid tests, that were fortunately negative. So many kids at their schools and some teachers were out sick but now there doesn’t seem to be much illness and I hope it stays that way.

@lowtechcyclist: According to 91-divoc, cumulative covid deaths in Sweden are 182.2 per 100K, compared to Norway at 56, and Finland at 75.1. So much winning in Sweden!

@Jesse: yes. I went on the Novavax trial which was fine but then they just did nothing for months & months. Last October I wanted to get a booster but Walgreens, CVS had never heard of Novavax and couldn’t give me a booster as I hadn’t been vaccinated but they could give me a full course. Rather than die of old age arguing I went along with it. A couple of weeks ago I got contacted that I should get a booster. I’m just treating it like a repeating treatment like the 6 monthly Cholera jabs of my youth
Fair Economist
@Jesse: Unboosted people *appearing* to do better is going to be selection bias. Older and sicker people are more likely to get boosted. This showed up in Israeli data early on with respect to vaccination – raw numbers showed no benefit, but that was because (roughly) only old people had gotten vaccinated at that point (it was still being stratified by age). When results were stratified by age, the benefit to vaccination became clear again – even though that still didn’t account for health status or age within group, both of which continued to bias results against vaccination.
Fair Economist
@New Deal democrat: It’s possible BA.4 and BA.5 are starting to contribute to cases as well.
