Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

We still have time to mess this up!

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

This time last week, North Korea was still claiming to be one of three COVID-free countries worldwide. Now more than 1.2 million people across the country have symptoms of a “fever.”https://t.co/YM2TZ49Xkt

There are no cures but doctors are helping #LongCovid patients. Hospital systems in New York City area were among the 1st in the US to form multidisciplinary programs dedicated to LongCovid. Programs focus on individual treatment https://t.co/Hc8Vu2ImUR

The reason is the same as it was when we first examined this trend in December of 2021. Vaccination rates in heavily Trump counties are 21 points lower than the rates in heavily Biden counties.https://t.co/zpmbS7CYZS pic.twitter.com/EyjfKttD6R

Even though the UK government has effectively declared the pandemic over, my positive test and an extra 10 days in Edinburgh before being able to fly home suggests that it isn’t.

‘@OFC: Is that a government thing or an airline thing?

    Hope you’re symptom-free while you’re in the covid-pokey.

There’s a piece in WaPo about how Biden has thus far avoided the virus even though many of his closest aides/associates have had it. They theorize it’s not just a matter of taking recommended precautions (masks, vax, etc.) and limiting proximity but also limiting TIME spent with others.

Knock wood, my husband and I have also avoided the virus even though we live in an area where infections rage unchecked whenever there’s a surge. I think precautions/proximity/time might be our secret too.

‘@BC: Agreed. I’m certain that sprinting through the grocery store, dodging those feeble old coots leaning so heavily on their carts while I blow past, has saved me innumerable times. In and out in 5 minutes.

‘@OFC: Ouch. 10 days in a hotel room sounds boring, even in Edinburgh. How was the trip otherwise?

Thanks to WG for doing this.

Thanks to WG. At this point, I don’t see how this doesn’t become an extinction-level event for 358 Data Centers. The amount they’ll have to pay out in SLA rebates must be astonishing.

“the CDC director is urging local leaders & individuals to consider returning to wearing masks in indoor public settings”

Masks were required at the play we saw in NYC last night. Elsewhere, not so much.

Thank you for this WaterGirl. Good morning, all.

‘@G&T: I’m assuming there is insurance for this sort of thing.

Also, earlier WG said that there were third-hand rumors of Federal agencies being involved. This could mean
    a) Federal Agencies caused it
    b) Federal Agencies were impacted as users
    c) Federal Agencies are involved in the forensics and, possibly, counter-measures

I’m gonna go with d) Both b and c. And just maybe some Federal money will keep these guys afloat if there is significant Federal use of the infrastructure.

‘@Spanky @DAW Thanks! The US government, so therefore the airlines, requires a negative test one day before your flight OR a doctor’s letter of recovery ten days after your positive test. Since you can test positive up to 90 days after getting covid (and I still am, although symptom-free and the little test line is growing fainter), I decided to go with the 10-day option so I could book my return flight.

Hanging around even a nice city when you can’t go into anything is kinda boring. Thankfully I’m just over a mile’s walk from the Royal Botanic Gardens, so I go there to avoid claustrophobia. I could write a book about the lovely walks of Edinburgh by the time I go home.

Over the past 10-14 days, several of our friends who BF & I have considered pretty careful – and vax’d & boosted – have caught the ‘rona.
It does seem like each variant is indeed finding ways to become more transmissible.
BF listened to Mike Osterholm (U of MN epidemiologist) who, alas, says that ppl who tested+ for BA.1 six to 12 weeks ago in South Africa still got BA.4 and BA.5
    Dang.
