Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Tick tock motherfuckers!

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

Here’s the horrifying news from Jake Tapper’s Twitter feed:

Fifteen have been killed in a shooting at Robb elementary school, according to Governor Greg Abbott — 14 students and 1 teacher.

Abbott said the shooter is also deceased.

What else is there to say except this is a deeply sick fucking country? That’s all I’ve got anyway.

UVALDE, Texas — Fourteen students and a teacher are dead after a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, according to Gov. Greg Abbott.

The 18-year-old suspect, a student at Uvalde High School, is also dead, he said.

He shot and killed horrifically and incomprehensibly 14 students and killed a teacher,” Abbott said during an unrelated press briefing.

The suspect also allegedly shot his grandmother before entering the school and again opening fire, Abbott said. He did not say anything further about her condition.

Abbott said the shooter had a handgun and also possibly a rifle.

Somebody had a extended family domestic violence issue/restraining order and one person suggested getting a pepper spray or a taser instead of a gun. Responses to this woman was ‘nooooo, you have to get a gun.’ The solution to a bike theft or a car break in is ‘get a gun.’ No discussion of all the tragic possible consequences.

Way back 10 years ago when Sandy Hook happened, a good friend asked my opinion of whether massacring kindergartners with a semi-automatic would be enough to finally get gun control.

I replied that 100, no, 1000 such massacres could happen every single day and *nothing* would change until voters were willing to make gun control their #1 priority.
Voters haven’t, and nothing has changed. The shootings have become ever more frequent and routine.

The same is true today: 100, no, 1000 of these massacres can happen every single day and *nothing* will change until voters are willing to make gun control their #1 priority.

The murder of at least 14 young children and a teacher, and for their families, friends, like the Parkland kids said, it’s never over for the survivors… This is a horrible, vicious, heartbreaking tragedy and we should feel anger and grief, but whatever we feel through the pain and despair, we do understand exactly how it happened: too many guns, and there must be gun control measures put in place. Pray if it helps on a personal level, but be honest, it’s the guns. Don’t let the GQP get away with weaseling out of it.

If we don’t have those things, it’s because we are ALLOWING ourselves to be ruled by a barbaric minority. In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.”

I don’t agree with that take AT ALL. The majority of Americans do want to see gun control, and they do not find the body count at Sandy Hook or elsewhere bearable.

We are stymied by well-funded minority rule on this one. And by those craven US Senate rules which serve a minority of Senators, and not the citizens of this country as a whole. One good thing: the NRA has been partially defanged, even while we contend with a ridiculous and illegitimate Supreme Court.

Screw Dan Hodges and his wanking. He does not speak for me, for anyone on this blog, for Americans, for “we.” He just wants to beat a drum and act all cynical and superior.

We don’t have a national popular vote on legislation. The US Senate is not representative. It’s a structural issue. It isn’t going to be fixed by voting harder or working harder.
People need achievable goals. Telling them it’s just a matter of will is simply not true.
This country is in trouble. The time for telling stories about how we can organize our way out of this is past. We need structural reforms across a whole host of institutions. You’re asking them – over and over and over- to work within a system that simply won’t produce the results they
need. They deserve at least to be told that.
