Some pundits seem mildly surprised that Mike Pence is stumping for Kemp in the Georgia GOP primary. That race is a proxy for Trump’s grudge match against Kemp, and Trump’s enmity toward Kemp is a proxy for Trump’s grudge match against the reality that he, Trump, is a losing loser who lost.
But is Pence’s defiance of Tangerine Baal in Georgia really surprising? Jonathan Martin in yesterday’s Times:
After four years of service bordering on subservience, the increasingly emboldened Mr. Pence is seeking to reintroduce himself to Republican voters ahead of a potential presidential bid by setting himself apart from what many in the G.O.P. see as the worst impulses of Mr. Trump. He’s among a small group in his party considering a run in 2024 no matter what Mr. Trump decides.
BORDERING on subservience? Pence steamed over that border and occupied the entire country of Subservientstan! He was the most obsequious toady in the history of servility!
And I think that’s why Pence is absolutely compelled to run again, even though Trump Republicans were baying for his blood on January 6 and it’s clear the party prefers loud-mouthed lib-owning authoritarians rather than the prim, Bible-humping variety. For Pence, it’s just too much to have endured that pride-swallowing nightmare for naught.
Pence simply cannot accept the fact that 4.5 years of starting every sentence with “Under President Trump’s exceptional leadership,” that all the ceaseless ass-kissing he lavished on a gross orange pervert was undone by one day’s adherence to the law. The smooth brain beneath the neatly clipped, fly-attracting white hair just cannot compute that fact. Pence is in denial.
Anyway, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving lickspittle, and I hope the forthcoming series of rejections causes severe psychological distress. Fuck that guy.
Also, there are some interesting primary races today. It looks like Georgia Republicans really will put a domestic-violence prone serial liar up against Senator Warnock. Will Hice prevail over Raffensperger, perhaps setting the stage for overturning fair elections in the future? Could be!
Will terrible Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey avoid a runoff? Maybe. Will Mo Brooks overcome Trump’s un-endorsement to prevail for the U.S. Senate race? That would be funny. Will felonious TX AG Ken Paxton finally put the desiccated Bush dynasty out of its misery?
The only race I’m personally invested in is Cuellar vs. Cisneros in the TX 28th. The anti-choice, possibly corrupt as fuck Cuellar is favored to win, but I hope Cisneros kicks his ass.
Which races are you watching? Open thread!

Some good news this morning in Florida. The free speech for me and not for thee law has been ruled unconstitutional by the Appeals Court.
https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2022/05/23/appeals-court-florida-law-on-social-media-unconstitutional/
“ ST. PETERSBURG — A Florida law intended to punish social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter is an unconstitutional violation of the First Amendment, a federal appeals court ruled Monday, dealing a major victory to companies who had been accused by GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis of discriminating against conservative thought.
A three-judge panel of the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously concluded that it was overreach for DeSantis and the Republican-led Florida Legislature to tell the social media companies how to conduct their work under the Constitution’s free speech guarantee.
Put simply, with minor exceptions, the government can’t tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it,” said Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, in the opinion. “We hold that it is substantially likely that social media companies — even the biggest ones — are private actors whose rights the First Amendment protects.”
The ruling upholds a similar decision by a Florida federal district judge on the law, which was signed by DeSantis in 2021. It was part of an overall conservative effort to portray social media companies as generally liberal in outlook and hostile to ideas outside of that viewpoint, especially from the political right.“
Betty Cracker
Interesting that it was a Trump-appointed judge who ruled against DeSantis! That law and many others included in the culture war slate over the last two years were performative legislation, IMO. DeSantis and the wingnut statehouse want the Fox News credit for trying, and they won’t suffer for having been shot down by the courts. Florida taxpayers will suffer since we are on the hook for the legal costs of defending DeSantis/statehouse’s shoddy legislation. But they don’t give a shit about that.

The GOP candidate for governor in PA wants an abortion ban with no exception for the life of the mother.
This is apparently fine with the anti-abortion “movement”. This is their candidate- a man who says if it’s a choice between a baby and a mother the mother must die.
Not a peep out of the huge, paid anti-abortion groups. They’re backing this.
They have tricked and misled the public at every stage since that opinion leaked. Their candidates promote these insane laws and the paid anti-abortion lobbyists appear on television the same day denying the laws are the goal. Absolute untrustworthy liars, every one of them.

I think reasonable people can disagree on whether it was right to out the woman behind Libs of TikTok. The right does not want a functional government. They can’t implement their policy of no government intervention in the theft of the country if there is an actual functional government. And theft is the only way they actually have to get the non governing government they want. It’s why they support the worst president ever or at least anyone like him. They also understand, barely, that his openness about their racism, and theft of the country, while agreeable to them, is just a bit too open about their goals. They are between a rather large rock and a rather hard place, trying to fuck over an entire country. They used to hide their goal a bit better, but as general life has got better through democratic policies for the majority, their risk of losing all their hopes and dreams of being in 1000% control of everything and taking the country back over 250 yrs worth of halting progress of that they have been attempting to fuck over for that entire time, they are desperate. They have an old rich fuck who is backing their desperate ploy and has been for going on 30 yrs in 3 countries and millions of people, with faux news and their counterparts and they are getting even more desperate. Conservatives like money, and winning so they can get away easier with stealing more money. That power of winning in politics also makes it harder for folks like us to just exist, which makes their pastime of making money the easy and dishonest way much more productive and harder to find them guilty of.

I got a notice this mornings email that UPS has a major service interruption in Dallas. Wonder if this is related in any way to the BJ interruption….

Yeah, there’s a community college in Michigan that went down when we did and is still down. Coincidence?

I know! It’s hilarious and pathetic although not quite as hilarious and pathetic as Vernon Jones’ chances in that race.

It is what it is. It look like some of that Teflon rubbed off of Donny on to Herschel as much as the latter kisses the former’s ass.
I still find it amazing that we have not one, but two black Republicans that packed their bags for ostensibly greener pastures in this Georgia election cycle.

“This is one of the few elections I can remember where I’m voting for all incumbents.”
Mostly. (Although Newsom’s only virtue is that the alternatives are worse.)
The exception is my (D) Assembly member. I’m remembering the election where she first won that seat. While demonstrating a devotion to truth and honesty worthy of Donald Trump. (Yes, really that bad.) Even a couple of years of some RWNJ would be a price worth paying to dump her.

‘@schrodingers cat Cuellar has the FBI raid hanging over him. Per 538 its a D+7 lean. The GOPr is a Trumper whackjob. I think Cisneros is the better bet of two not great candidates(Cisneros is probably too liberal for it.) Comes down to Hispanics and abortion.

My guess is that Trump’s fear of bananas is that he’ll slip on one and fall embarassingly on his a$$ like a character in a bugs bunny cartoon.

Oooh an EDIT button! WaterGirl has been working overtime. Cole should give her a raise.

Bill Maher says he hasn’t changed, Democrats have. Isn’t that part of being liberal? When new information arrives, different analysis or understandings, we adapt and re-think and try news stuff?
If Maher is proud that he isn’t changing, then he’s saying he’s fundamentally a conservative.
