This is your occasional reminder that: a) Zelensky made offers along these lines and Putin rebuffed them; and b) even if Russia loses badly it will not be humiliated. https://t.co/k2Ap3mkfn0 https://t.co/23sV4HN73h

Appearing on Russian state TV, head of RT Margarita Simonyan explained why Russia isn't nuking Ukraine: not because it's wrong, but because it's not practical. They want those territories usable and don't want to kill all inhabitants—only some of them—and need to sort them first. pic.twitter.com/wfe6cgPKiu

The religious pundits should have been fired from the very beginning. Remember the game telephone? Humans, are the worst. I’m too old to want a website.

Great roundup! Thanks. I wonder where that diplomat is now….maybe there is a spare room at one of the Vindman’s.

Shouldn’t it read, “Former U.S. secretary of state and acknowledged war criminal…”?

War criminal Kissinger stanning for war criminal Putin.

Really good letter here to Noam Chomsky and the NY Times that demonstrates just how out of touch they both. are. https://blogs.berkeley.edu/2022/05/19/open-letter-to-noam-chomsky-and-other-like-minded-intellectuals-on-the-russia-ukraine-war/

Excellent stuff. I like the “Warmest Regards” at the end.
I hate when people are more committed to their paradigm than reality.

You certainly are not the only one!
Pure speculation on my part, but: (1) He’s probably kinda busy with IRL work-related projects right now; and
(2) This work-in-progress standby site is *not* easy to navigate when you’re using tons of links, graphics, and embeds; Adam might just be waiting & hoping that the situation settles down soon.

Anne Laurie, thanks.

Most people weren’t alive when Kissinger was SoS and they think he has the hot take.

I think they’ve always held fairly compatible beliefs. It’s the system, maaaannn……
This is a war of choice, made by a foolish, small minded person, whose brain was cooked by too much Great Patriotic War B-movie bullshit.
Only a homicidal nut looks at the horror of the Russian WW2 experience, and decides that is what his undeserving citizens require.
Putin would have ended up dead in a Belarusian field circa 1941, done in by his own guys.

Projection on the nuclear front.
Putin is a bad faith actor and shit weasel.
Putinists have always assumed Ukraine lied about non-proliferation. Because that’s what they would do.
They’re afraid Moscow will get hit if they go full on stoopid.

Wrong thread.

Of course Zelenskyy doesn’t want to talk to any one else but Putin. Putin sees Ukraine as a vassal state at best, and vassals don’t get to talk to the top boss on an equal footing.

TFG would have signed an agreement ceding Ukraine to Russia in the first few months of his second term. We probably wouldn’t notice because he’d be busy shredding our NATO membership and arresting Democrats for treason against the king.
PaulB
Out of curiosity, historically speaking, has offering appeasement to someone like Putin ever led to long-term stability? In my (admittedly limited) knowledge, I don’t think it ever has. It simply emboldened the aggressor to move on to the next target.
I’m also puzzled by the insistence on the part of some that Russia cannot be defeated. If we’re talking about seeing Ukrainian troops marching into Moscow, that’s certainly true. But if we’re talking about the removal of Russian troops from occupied territories in Ukraine, the evidence to date suggests that Russia is most definitely beatable. And that it would be in the best interest of Ukraine, Europe, and indeed the rest of the world if it were to be defeated.
I’m struggling to understand the view that we should stop supporting Ukraine and force it to hand over a substantial part of its territory to Russia. The bad-faith actors I get and can easily ignore but some of this is coming from people I would normally be listening to. What am I missing?

The ” Open Letter ” to Chomsky is wonderful! Filled with facts which contradict most of Chomsky’s points, well written and logical.
I now have about the same respect for Professor Chomsky as I have for noted war criminal Kissinger.
Note that my tablet volunteered “Kissinger” after I typed “noted war criminal” — so my tablet is better informed than the FTFNYT!

PaulB:
I can’t speak for all of history, but Putin has already shown that appeasing him will not work. He has de facto control of Crimea, after invading in 2014, and now he wants Eastern Ukraine.
Plus, Putin has already made plain his desire to takeover all of Ukraine. As soon he has full control of Luhansk and Donetsk, he’ll use them as staging grounds to push westward, further into Ukraine.
Appeasement is completely useless under these circumstances, and the Russian government, as currently constituted, cannot be trusted to abide by any agreement or treaty.
