Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Second rate reporter says what?

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

China’s capital is offering elderly residents state-backed insurance for “medical accidents” linked to COVID-19 shots to ease vaccination hesitancy among those most vulnerable, as Beijing ramps up inoculations during its worst outbreak…

The new insurance plan, with premiums covered by the government, aims to “alleviate concerns over vaccination among the elderly group and their family members”, state television reported late on Thursday, citing information from the Beijing office of China’s banking and insurance regulator.

The insurance policy payout could be as high as 500,000 yuan ($74,200) per person for a single benefit, according to the report, which didn’t provide specific details of the plan.

Elsewhere, several districts in the northern city of Tianjin, also battling a fresh Omicron cluster, have pledged to “strictly limit” entry into venues such as stadiums for unvaccinated senior citizens who don’t have medical conditions that render vaccination unsuitable.

I’m halfway through the Paxlovid treatment. I have a little bit of metallic taste but nothing like what I’ve been reading. On the other hand my throat is killing me, especially at night. Every time I “gulp” it burns like hell and I can’t sleep more that 10 minutes at a time.

Looking at Worldometer, the Covid death rate seems to be leveling off at about 300 deaths per day, which is >100,000 deaths per year, which is more than gun deaths and motor vehicle deaths combined.

(Remember in 2020 when we hit 100,000 Covid deaths, and that it had killed so many was front-page news? Now that toll as an annual thing is what we mean by Covid being ‘over.’ Lordy.)

JFTR, this isn’t to disagree with Medriva’s 7-day average of 375, it’s the leveling-off. Basically this appears to be as good as it gets, for now.

ETA: @raven, thoughts and prayers that that gets better for you real soon. Even aside from the pain, as one who has periodic bouts of insomnia (but none nearly that bad), what you’re going through sounds like my idea of hell, and I’m sure that’s how it feels for you.

    Locally,
“A COVID surge and a rising number of flu cases are driving up sick calls among Hawaii’s frontline workers, leaving hospitals struggling to meet patient needs, health care officials said.

Across the state on Thursday, some 600 frontline workers were out sick.
    [snip]
Hawaii hospitals have already brought in more than 200 traveling nurses from the continent to help cover shifts. But Daniel Ross, the head of the nurses union, says that’s nowhere close to what’s needed.

‘It’s not a good time to be in the hospital,’ Ross said.

The president of the Hawaii Nurses Association spoke to HNN on Thursday morning on his break at the Queen’s Medical Center.

He says patients are coming in non-stop and that hospitals are woefully understaffed.”

    https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2022/05/27/hundreds-hawaiis-frontline-workers-out-sick-covid-surge-continues/

    Also,
“The state Department of Health is reporting a COVID-19 count of 8,924 new cases over the past week, between May 19-25, 2022. This comes following a record high of 6,252 new cases reported in a single day on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, during the omicron surge.

Cases have been trending up since mid-March, when 827 new COVID-19 cases were reported during the weekly tally. The latest data represents a ninth consecutive week of increases in new infections.
    [snip]
The latest weekly count includes 772 cases on Maui, 1,102 on Hawaiʻi Island, 443 on Kauaʻi, 18 on Molokaʻi, 11 on Lānaʻi, and 103 out of state. There are 6,475 new COVID-19 cases on Oʻahu.

The latest data represents a total of 14,871 “active” cases statewide over two weeks.
    [snip]
Hawai‘i’s COVID-19 deaths increased to 1,451, with five new deaths reported over the past week.

In Maui County, the seven day average for new daily cases is 67.6 per 100k; or 113 average over the last seven days. The countyʻs test positivity rate is 16.6%, and the statewide positivity rate is now 18.3%.”

    And,
“The omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, currently the dominant lineages circulating in South Africa, have recently been detected in Hawaii, according to the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

DOH’s latest variant report, published Wednesday, confirmed one case of BA.4 and one case of BA.5 detected through whole genome sequencing in May.
    [snip]
Both BA.4 and BA.5 contain four additional mutations within the spike protein when compared to BA.2, and are estimated to be about 1.6 and 1.8 times more transmissible, respectively, than BA.2., according to the report.”

There were 25,189 active cases yesterday, 17 more than the day before. 1,076 are in hospital. 27 confirmed cases are in ICU; of these patients, 18 confirmed cases cases are on ventilators. Meanwhile, 1,825 more patients have recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,438,212 patients recovered – 98.6% of the cumulative reported total.

Nationwide cases have risen 6,300, or 6%, week over week to 110,900, vs. up 20% in the previous 7 days. Hospital admissions are up 3,500 week over week, or 15%, to 26,300. Deaths are 358, up 49 from one week ago.

91-Divoc’s State data went haywire overnight, but it appears from The NY Times site that DE, OH, and MD have joined the list of States where cases are at or have peaked. On the other hand, in the past week cases have risen over 35% in CA, 25% in TX, and almost 15% in FL. So this wave has a ways to go in the South and West.

I am hopeful that this wave will peak in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile as to the next wave, per Eric Topol yesterday:

    https://mobile.twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1529965612956405761?cxt=HHwWgsCi7c3nw7sqAAAA
“ BA.4/5 is more pathogenic than BA.2 in animal model.”

So far there is no evidence of BA.4/5 spreading much beyond South Africa, and it does not seem to be making a dent in the U.S.

I ended up with a major cold early Feb and it was much worse.

I’m pretty sure I had some minor long covid. Every few days I’d be ‘fuzzy’ all day. Being a programmer that’s not a good thing. I got a 4th shot about a month ago and those fuzzy days have disappeared.

N’ice brand throat lozenges might provide some short-term relief, enough to snatch more sleep. Or Chloraseptic brand throat spray.

Also too, garlic, honey and lemon tea an old folk remedy that’s a soothing sip to inflamed throats.

Peel and crush a few (3 or 4) cloves of garlic, add to a saucepan of boiling water (3 cups or so) and stir in 1 or 2 tbl. honey (or more, to taste) until it dissolves, Remove from heat and let steep, covered, for 5 more minutes or so. Stir in juice from half a lemon. Strain into a cup (remainder keeps well in a jar in fridge).

‘@Raven Sorry to hear you have covid, I hope it clears up fast for you. The best thing I’ve ever found for a really bad sore throat is Chloraseptic mouth spray.

After bottoming out in March, our case count and rate are climbing back to August 2021 levels, and the positive case rate is a surprising 30%. Hospitalizations are up as well, but not equaling last year and importantly, ICU cases remain low. Anecdotally, we know of many new cases over the last few weeks.

In sum, looks like we’ll have a summer spike but one hopes not with as many sever and fatal cases. They note omicron as the cause but I don’t know whether sub-variants (is that a word?) are part of that or how many samples are used for supplying that info. Home tests aren’t, to be sure.

Our first set of Biden tests (thanks, Joe!) are expiring and I ordered the new ones.

Il Nonno got vaccination #4 yesterday, Pfizer like all the others due to his many medical issues. I don’t qualify at the moment, need to be over 80, but we wil be in the US in August, hope I can just march into a pharmacy and get another booster, New York State, any advice?

‘@La Nonna – I’m 60 and got my 2nd Pfizer booster on Monday from the county health department here in NoVA. Plenty of appointments were available. I had the usual sore arm and needed to take a 3 hour nap under some blankets on Tuesday afternoon (feeling a little poorly, maybe a slight fever), but was fine Wednesday. My previous booster was 5.5 months ago; all my shots have been Pfizer.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Scott.

My first three shots were Pfizer; I scheduled a Moderna for my second booster Sunday. I will have Memorial Day to recover and no dance classes next week, so I’ll be able to take it easy. I leave for Italy on July 3, so I expect I’ll be at peak effect around then. Two hours in DFW, ugh.

‘@origuy, we had a Moderna after three Pfizer shots a week ago. We had no side effects other than sore arms. I hope it’s working, and I hope you have the same lack of symptoms.
