… Some 88,520 more people showed fever symptoms as of Friday evening, compared with nearly 400,000 about 10 days ago, the official KCNA news agency said, citing data from the state emergency epidemic prevention headquarters.
The total number of fever patients since April rose to 3.36 million among the 25 million population. KCNA did not report any additional death. As of Friday, the death toll stood at 69.
North Korea has not confirmed the total number of people testing positive for the coronavirus, apparently lacking in testing supplies. Experts have said the announced figures could be underreported, and that it is hard to assess the actual scale of the situation…

JBS U.S. units to adopt pandemic response plans after COVID outbreaks https://t.co/hRDY9Vfhqu pic.twitter.com/TTID9fxqcG
— Reuters (@Reuters) May 28, 2022
Subsidiaries of meat processor JBS USA LLC [RIC:RIC:JBS.UL] have agreed to implement infectious disease preparedness plans at seven U.S. plants, in the wake of a U.S. congressional report finding that the industry largely failed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among workers.
The agreement was announced on Friday by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which said the companies will work with teams of outside experts to develop and implement new policies on engineering, ventilation, visitor screening, cleaning, and personal protective equipment.
OSHA said the agreement involves plants in six states operated by JBS units Swift Beef Co, Swift Pork Co, JBS Souderton Inc and JBS Green Bay Inc…
In 2020, a total of seven workers at two JBS facilities in Colorado and Wisconsin died from COVID-19 and nearly 650 employees tested positive for the virus.
OSHA on Friday said it had found that the facilities failed to take steps to protect workers and levied $14,502 in fines.
A Reuters analysis of public data published in January found that nearly 90% of U.S. processing plants owned by JBS and four other major meat companies had COVID-19 cases in 2020 and early 2021, and that 269 workers had died during that period…
The announcement comes two weeks after a U.S. House of Representatives panel released a report saying JBS and other large meat processors had failed to adopt measures to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Monroe County, NY:
276 new cases reported for 5/27.
New Deal democrat
Let me start out with some good news, to put in perspective that we are not just facing wave after unrelenting wave.
The BA.2.12.1 variant was first observed in the Central New York upstate region. Cases tripled between March 9 and April 15. As of yesterday, that has completely been unwound: cases are as low as March 9, and tied for the lowest since last August.
Nationwide cases are at 110,800, an increase of only 2550, or 2%, above one week ago. Hospital admissions rose to 26,300, an increase of 3,000 from one week ago, and still lower than any time except May through July 2021 and the last several months. Deaths have risen to 388, an increase of 83 from one week ago. Deaths remain extremely low relative to almost all times during the pandemic.
State data from 91-Divoc is still haywire, but from The NY Times site it appears that cases are at or have peaked throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Upper Midwest, and PR. Cases are also only up slightly – less than 5% week over week – in OR and WA.
In other big States, CA is up 10% in the last week; FL over 10%, TX up over 25%; NC 20%; CO over 40%.
I am increasingly optimistic that we are close to a peak in cases in this wave. We will probably still see deaths over 1000 in a month or two.
Central NYS is the optimistic case for what comes after. Although there was some discussion yesterday about BA.4/5, the fact is it has been around for a month or more at very low levels in urban States in the US, and it does not seem to be making any headway against BA.2.12.1 at this point.

Our two new packages of COVID test kits arrived yesterday in the mail. This time, it was a different manufacturer and each box had 5 tests in them, so two more tests than promised. However, I have never heard of Clinitest manufactured by Siemens. Hmm.
Also, I’m confused about the iHealth test kits. They display a “use by” date on the outside and an expiration date on the inside. The expiration date is months longer than the “use by” date. (The other brands we have had only display an expiration date).
Why a different date and which date is the crucial one, “use by” or expiration?

‘@ Baud: “ hospitalizations would lag for about a week. True?”
That’s about right. Hope that helps.

‘@scout211 I think thats like a pharmacy label which has the pharmacist label which is usually a year after it was prescribed and the manufacturers expiration which is usually longer. If its unopened and÷ stored properly the product is usually good till the manufacturers expiration.

In the Chinese pandemic response system, Risk level designations (Low/Medium/High) are determined at the municipal CDC level, but degree of movement controls (Precautionary/Restricted Movement/Lockdown) are determined at sub-district level (w/ guidance from municipal CDC). The lowest rung of Chinese administrative system, the community office/neighborhood committee, do not have the power to determine Risk level or official degree of movement control. However, they do have some discretion to tighten movement control beyond what the official designation calls for, based on their aversion to risk. Since the overriding imperative up & down Chinese government bureaucracy is “Dynamic Zero COVID”, some community offices are incentivized to keep the residents in their areas of responsibility locked down to prevent any flare ups, even if the areas is officially designated as “Precautionary”, which should have significant freedom of movement. This is also the greatest cause of popular discontent.
(BTW, this is also why many Chinese jurisdictions insists on separating the children from the parents if only one has tested negative. Their single biggest Key Performance Indicator under “Dynamic COVID Zero” is case incidence rate. If separating the positive child from the negative parents prevents the parents from becoming positive cases, that is what the authorities will do, humanitarian concerns be damned. Still no reason to separate positive children from positive parents.)
So why do protests sometimes work, especially if the community office has tightened movement control significantly beyond official designation? Well the 2nd most important imperative up & down Chinese government bureaucracy is maintaining stability. Having protests garnering attention on social media is a major black mark against any local administrator. If the protests gather enough attention, then its negative affect can override any extreme caution wrt “Dynamic COVID Zero”.

We finally got a second booster, Moderna at the Kanawha County Health Dept. Our second booster was just a third vaccination, just before boosters with smaller doses were approved, when the Health Dept feared the loss of vaccine to expiration, they decided to do a walk-in vax program open to anyone.
I had a pretty severe reaction to my second full dose back in March of ’21 — slept 16 hours the first night, napped the next afternoon, went to bed for 16 more hours. When I woke up had whole body charlie horse-style muscle cramps. Was miserable for a couple of weeks, still would do it again, the vax can’t be as bad as the disease.
