Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People are complicated. Love is not.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

We still have time to mess this up!

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

NOTE: Barring disaster, I don’t plan to post an Update tomorrow (Monday / Tuesday). For one thing, given the holiday weekend, there probably won’t be much to aggregate. And for another, the Spousal Unit wants to go somewhere darker than our neighborhood in hopes of a Tau Herculid meteor storm.

When will we know if Covid is seasonal? The word from virologists is the infection is likely headed toward seasonality, but it's not there yet https://t.co/bPIhIqKCR1

Very few States updated yesterday, so just a brief national summary.

Cases declined slightly again to 105,600 vs. their peak of 110,900 three days ago, and 110,300 one week ago. Crossing fingers that this is real and not just due to the holiday weekend.

Hospitalizations increased to 26,300. This is still lower than at any point previous to this spring except for September 2020 and May-July 2021.

Deaths were 370 vs. 318 one week ago.

If 110,000 turns out to have been the real peak, then hospitalizations should peak at about 40,000 in a couple of weeks and deaths at about 1200 in a month or two.

Checking in, finally. I like the new (old) place! Seems roomier somehow. Higher ceilings?

Caught up on about 10 days’ worth of posts with DailyKos for substitute Ukraine war news, I watched Abbott’s first press conference wherein Beto stood up to those clowns.

Anyway, finally got my ‘Rona ticket punched, 2weeks ago and 4-1/2 months after my first booster. Probably at an art opening when the missus and I should have known better. I got symptoms 2 days in, so did 2 self-tests, positive, then a government PCR test, got positive results that evening, so that was that. About 5 days of sneezing, coughing and snorting, then a few days of heavy sleeping. Kept my appetite and sense of smell. Slight lingering cough. So, more like opiejeanne than Raven.

They don’t do Paxlovid here in NL in most cases—just go home and wait it out. The missus, being older, got her 2nd booster late March, so tested negative at home. Me sleeping downstairs and keeping some distance those 5 symptomatic days probably helped. My “booster” will wear off by September, when I’m eligible to get a real one. At least I got sick at the least worst time.

My 96 year old mom-in-law just tested positive last night, along with 4 other residents of her assisted living home.  Mild chest cold like symptoms.  Hoping to find out this morning if she’s a candidate for Paxlovid.  My grand kid and I visited her last Thursday, so we were possibly exposed.  I’ve been boosted, MIL’s been boosted.  My morning’s rapid test is negative; the kid has no symptoms so far and will get tested tonight.

The kiddo has been in the trial for Pfizer’s kid’s vaccine.  Data is still blinded, so we have no idea if he’s had any of the vaccine at all.  Such interesting times!

I am still very interested to see data — if the data exists — indicating whether or not other pathogens were affected by all of our hygiene methods and behaviors. Y’all know that I design healthcare spaces of all different types. Of course, in the first year of the pandemic, everybody insisted on putting in glass or acrylic dividers around every type of open work station or desk. This came at huge cost and looked hella ugly. And we already recommended interior materials that stood up to bleach-based cleaning chemicals, but the everybody started essentially swabbing down all the furniture 50 times a day with the “death wipes”, so the furniture’s life span is now less than nothing. And I have long suspected that none of it did a damn thing for Covid. BUT what about norovirus and C diff and MRSA? Those are all transmitted by surfaces. And they’re terrible. I would love to know if transmission rates of those went down.

At Guangdong Province 5 domestic confirmed & 3 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 24 active domestic confirmed & 12 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.

At Guangxi “Autonomous” Region 1 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 9 active domestic asymptomatic (4 at Fangchenggang, 3 at Baise, & 2 at Chongzuo) cases remaining.

At Hunan Province there currently is 1 active domestic confirmed case in the province.

Shandong Province reported 1 new domestic asymptomatic case. 3 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. As not all of the administrative divisions in the province provide data on recoveries, I cannot track the count of active cases in all of the administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks.

    • Qingdao did not report any new domestic positive cases. There currently is 1 active domestic asymptomatic case in the city.
    • Jinan did not report any new domestic positive cases. 2 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 1 active domestic confirmed & 7 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city

Liaoning Province reported 5 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all at Dandong. 3 domestic confirmed & 29 asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 78 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. All sites in the province are now at Low Risk.

Jilin Province reported 5 new domestic asymptomatic cases. 3 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. As the province does not consistently break down recoveries by confirmed & asymptomatic cases or by jurisdictions, I can no longer track the count of active case counts in the different jurisdictions.

Shanghai municipal government just announced that the city’s lock down will be lifted starting from tomorrow, w/ all businesses & public spaces reopened at reduced capacity, & all public transportation in operation. Except for areas officially designated as Medium/High Risk, or zones officially designated as under lockdown or movement control (which together covers ~ 4% of the city’s population), sub-district & communities are prohibited from imposing tighter restrictions on their own (surely to assuage the most significant complaint from the population in the past couple of weeks).

Given that Shanghai is still finding the odd case from community via frequent mass screening in recent days, & other parts of China are reporting travelers from the city testing positive (after testing negative w/in 48 hrs of departure from Shanghai), there could still be very low level cryptic transmission there. One hopes the city does not suffer a relapse.

Gadzooks, I’ve missed these updates.  The bit above about almost all of the Covid patients from earlier variants losing some sense of taste and smell has me now wandering around the house, sniffing everything I can, as I really didn’t think I had that as a symptom with my bout with the OG variant or my fresh case of Omicron. :(

I got the usual Covid check-in questionnaire from my oncologist’s office (6 month check-up this Wednesday) and filled it out honestly (yes, I did test positive in the past 21 days) and now I’m on hold until someone from the office is going to call me.  As I’m testing negative and finished isolation a week ago today, I’m assuming it’ll all be fine, but maybe not.  Yet another reminder that having Covid is a huge disruption to daily life, even if you don’t get severely ill.  If they cancel this appointment I’m guessing it’ll be 3-4 months before they can get me in again, and that’s very anxiety-inducing when the office is the oncologist.

@Suzanne:BUT what about norovirus and C diff and MRSA? Those are all transmitted by surfaces. And they’re terrible. I would love to know if transmission rates of those went down.

That is an excellent question. Seasonal flu went to practically nothing in the US during COVID because social distancing and mask wearing are effective against influenza too.

Yes, those barriers were designed when we thought COVID was transmitted by droplets. Now that we know it can be airborne then the idea of disrupting air flow is different.

I recall reading an article early in the pandemic about how it would drive changes in home design. Putting a place to wash your hands into an entryway. Brass/bronze fixtures since those have anti-biotic and anti-viral properties. Changes in surfaces to make them easier to clean, as you mention with the bleach-based cleaning. Ventilation, ventilation, and more ventilation. Not sure these changes have really come to pass.

For those who have not yet looked at this widely-reported-on CDC report:
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) – CDC – “Post–COVID Conditions Among Adult COVID-19 Survivors Aged 18–64 and ≥65 Years — United States, March 2020–November 2021 (May 24, 2022)

“A retrospective matched cohort design was used to analyze EHRs during March 2020–November 2021”

    The study is reasonably-large: Case-patients == 353,164, Control patients == 353,164
This is different than the Veterans Administration long-COVID studies, which are similarly alarming.
See the table with risk ratios for various sequelae (usefully tight error bars):
    https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7121e1.htm#T1_down
(If one pokes, one can find complaints about this study. They do not invalidate the results, IMO.
Most members of the US population are rolling the long-COVID die (1d6) every 6 months or so, and we/the USA will eventually end up with 20+ millions (10+M already) with long-term damage of varying severity. This will burden the USA a large economic competitive disadvantage relative to some other countries, e.g. China, that took/take pandemic control seriously, in part because of no psychopathic and powerful domestic political opposition.
