On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Just bird pics, no narrative, for this occasion!

That painted bunting, just gorgeous!

Their feathers look like flowers

Careful! You put someone’s eye out!
Seriously, Dude-who-named-this-bird? Grow up!
WaterGirl
Thank you, Albatrossity! I should have set this for 5 am! I was so pleased when this came in last night, but I was so tired that I forgot I had to make it public and schedule it for 5 am.
So nice to have birds back with us this morning!
debbie
I saw my very first house finch outside my window yesterday morning and realized how much I’d missed Albatrossity’s photos. So glad you’re back!
Cervantes
The painted bunting is fake, right?
skerry
Lovely photos. I recently put up a feeder and am enjoying my new visitors.
Mike E
@Cervantes: Birds aren’t real
martha
As usual, these photos are incredible! So glad to see them (and everyone else) here, after way too long…
OzarkHillbilly
@Cervantes: Oh no, that’s real paint on his feathers.
Wag
Excellent! Welcome home, Albatrossity
Albatrossity
@WaterGirl: Thank you! I was happy to see the site back up last night, and since the next day was Monday, and since the evil data center stole all the previous submissions that were in the bin, I figured a few pretty bird images could be submitted and maybe brighten up a Monday for some jackals. I suspected you had already hit the sack when those came in, but am glad to see them, and you and the rest of the regulars, here this morning!
Math Guy
So good to see the site back up.
Betty
Gorgeous collection of critters! Thanks, Albatrossity!
MelissaM
Good to be back and good to see Albatrossity’s work.
I sat in the yard yesterday and watched baby birds hound their parents for food. It amuses me to see this adult sized birds be like “FEED!” and their parents panic and feed them.
Frank Wilhoit
Meh, one less wasp. There’s trillions more where that came from.
Spanky
@Frank Wilhoit: Yeah, and they’re all here upstairs with me.
This is what happens when the cedar siding starts to warp.
Steeplejack
@mrmoshpotato:
That’s Mr. Cissel to you, buddy.
Chat Noir
Great birb pix! Glad the site is back up and running.
SteveinPHX
Wonderful bird pics! Thank you!
UncleEbeneezer
@Albatrossity: Does that mean that we need to resubmit OTR pics/posts that were in the queue in the Before Times?
UncleEbeneezer
Today begins my first week of a bunch of Summer Camps (tennis). For this one I have to drive down to Diamond Bar and spend all week in Ronald (spit) Reagan Park…
On the upside, we had several new attendees at our Indivisible meeting yesterday and cranked out a couple hundred postcards to register (likely Dem) voters in CA-27. It seems that Roe and Uvalde have gotten people interested in taking action again. Many of these people we hadn’t seen since the Mid-Terms. So that is a very good sign.
Albatrossity
@UncleEbeneezer:
Yes, that is my understanding.
cvannatta
Hooray for the return of Balloon Juice after the Unplanned Lockdown. And as always, fantastic photos by Albatrossity.
JanieM
Thanks for the pics, Albatrossity. If last night felt like coming home, this feels like sitting down in the most comfortable room in the house and enjoying the beloved and familiar decor.
Love that painted bunting. :-)
Citizen_X
Fantastic pics!
UncleEbeneezer
@Albatrossity: Thanks. Will do.
Xavier
@Cervantes: My son the birder describes the painted bunting as “looking like something a kindergartner would draw.”
kmax
Getting registered.
Love to see the birdies again, and good to be at the new home.
WaterGirl
@UncleEbeneezer: Yes, it does.
mvr
Good to see these again! I did see a photo or two of yours on twitter but these threads are generally really informative as I try to figure out which birds are which. Thanks!
And thanks to WaterGirl for all the work in the background.
Frank Wilhoit
@Spanky: We lived (early 1990s) in a house with cedar siding. It had been painted with battleship paint. Yes, I know; but it will last longer than a Twinkie.
Pete Mack
Tanagers are just shocking to see. They are alas very rare now that hedgerows and unmowed fields are uncommon in the east.
arrieve
Oh this makes me so very happy! Thank you Albatrossity, and thank you WaterGirl for bringing BJ and OTR back.

That Baltimore Oriole isn’t at all impressed by us. The Stilt is a little more charitable but the Oriole says to up your game.
BigJimSlade
Wow. Albatrossity, you must carry a mighty lens!
WaterGirl
Thanks to everyone who is resubmitting their OTR posts.
I know Albatrossity had 3 in waiting. Someone else had 10, you know who you are. Maybe one or two JanieM. Maybe one Steve in Mendocino?
I do the scheduling from a special folder in Outlook, so even though the posts are gone from BJ (at least for now) I still had the confirmation emails so I
knowknew who was scheduled when. The reason for all the instances of “maybe” is that my laptop overloaded yesterday when I was working on the site, crashed my email so hard that I had to run the database repair (takes hours) and the first repair was unsuccessful, so now I am running it again with my fingers crossed. sigh.
So that’s just from memory. I do know that we had 4 weeks of posts in the queue.
So if you submitted something and it hadn’t been posted yet, I hope you will think about resubmitting. I do feel especially bad for the series of 10 OTR submissions. :-(
S Cerevisiae
Thanks for the beautiful bird pics! I have added 3 more to my life list recently, 4 more and I will have 600!
Madeleine
Such beautiful birds’ heads! I’m so glad you’re back, Albatrossity!

These are amazing. It’s like you’re sitting right beside them having a conversation. Don’t know which one I like best – they’re all so good.
A woman from anywhere (formerly Mohagan)
So glad to see bird pix again! The closeups really give me a sense of the birds as individual beings living their lives. Thank you Albatrossity. Now to find out if I’ve been let out of moderation :-
ETA: I am! Thank you Water Girl for all you do.
JeanneT
It’s been a tough day – thank you for the beauty break!
JanieM
@WaterGirl: Thanks for the recap. That was all you needed, an overloaded laptop, right…?
I had one in the queue pre-disaster and resubmitted it a couple of hours ago. Will re-resubmit if need be. Otherwise will move on to Mendocino photos.

THE BIRBS ARE BACK!!!
J R in WV
that 1st birb… it looks like something is wrong with its face/bill?
Wonderful photos — thanks to everyone for bringing this site back to us!
Steeplejack
@J R in WV:
Holding a wasp or bee, I think.
StringOnAStick
@J R in WV: I thought the same thing but on second look I think it has a bug in its bill, maybe a grasshopper.
Albatrossity
@StringOnAStick: it had just captured a honeybee. I sent this pic to my brother, who is an avid beekeeper, and his reply was “Nasty bird”.
Harsh, methinks.
susanna
A welcome, grateful feast for the eyes. These birds are stunning.
Thank you Watergirl and others who mended this place.
Laura Too
@Albatrossity:Such a delight! It is so nice to have my little nightly pleasure of viewing OTR and your wonderful photos! You are so generous with your time and talent.
Watergirl, you are amazing! Thanks for all you do!
WaterGirl
@JanieM: I got the one you submitted today, so that’s good!
JanieM
@WaterGirl: Good to know, thanks for letting me know you’ve got it!
Chris T.
I don’t normally comment on these but I feel compelled to say: those are stunning shots.
