Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Ron DeSantis, the grand wizard, oops, governor of FL

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Republicans in disarray!

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Not all heroes wear capes.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Reporting home Covid test results can be confusing. In many places, there's no system for sharing home test results with health officials, but the information may still be beneficial for public health. Here’s how to report your results https://t.co/llyspSkWSD

Trigger warning – This is hard to read, but… I’m afraid there might be yet another long-tail consequence of the current anti-vaxxer movement:

Opinion by Thomas Gross: I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the baby I examined as I hear that childhood vaccinations have dropped substantially because of anti-vaccine sentiments. https://t.co/6XOt8EMgZq

    I don’t remember where I found this:

what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious month between covid waves?

I might have posted that once before, every time I think this joke is now outdated, nope.

    Monroe County, NY:

145 new cases according to the NYSDOH. This is only PCR tests.

I may venture into the grocery store with that month between waves instead of doing curbside pickup, and maybe have lunch outdoors with friends.

It’s been 3 weeks since I got my Rona card punched. Still feeling “Flemish” with occasional coughing. Technically in the clear and no danger to anyone, but the missus and I wear masks on public transport and I’ve gone back to wearing one during my Saturday morning flea market scrums. September’s a long way off for my second booster, and I could still get it again and pass it to her.

Corona weekly numbers come out Tuesday evenings here in NL, 7056 down from 7483 previously. Feels like easing down to a floor of 6000-7000 weekly, and now it’s summer pop festival and travel season, and chaos at the airport.

The UU church was cancelled today (yay, no making coffee for me!) because this county in IN went yellow. Thing is, how do they know because IN seems to have stopped reporting cases to the national databases.

    @satby: Well, it’s complicated…

Several states (cough, Florida, cough) stopped releasing statewide stats, and discouraged counties/municipalities from releasing covid stats because “privacy”.

    However…

Most county or municipal health departments are still gathering those stats.  If your local administrative division has sane executives (who are not necessarily Democrats, though it helps), they’re coordinating with the health department.

In larger areas, like Greater Boston, we’ve got wastewater reporting which gives local health departments a heads-up on upticks (which correlate strongly to new variants).  That lets mayors / council presidents / town managers know when to do frequent checkins with their local DPH.  Everytime BioBot shows an uprise, our town manager publicizes it, and the “please wear a mask” advisory goes back up on the business doors that took them down.
