Julee Cruise, probably best known for her performances in songs used in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, passed away yesterday. RIP to a talented woman with a great voice.
Cruise contributed a cover of Elvis’ Summer Kisses, Winter Tears to Wim Wenders’ 1991 film Until the End of the World. The centerpiece of that movie is Solveig Dommartin’s performance, including her duet with Elvis’ original version of the song, during a car ride that shows a pretty accurate view of what car navigation would look like in the near future:

First time I ever heard Julee Cruise was on Peter Schickele’s radio show.
He would play different songs and analyze them. He played “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart” and I immediately went out and bought one of her albums.
She was always one of my favorite singers/songwriters. Lupus. Damn. And so young.

Nice reply to George Wills here:
Old School
RIP Julee. Always wished she would record more as the results were frequently haunting.
MisterDancer
@germy shoemangler: Damn, but “at least the pronoun police will go into a classroom” is “I want her to know it was me” levels of devastating.
germy shoemangler
@MisterDancer:
Brutal. I wonder if George saw the reply. Hope so.

Talented. Know the music but not the artist. Gone too soon, to be sure. ETA, the actress reminds me of Krysten Ritter.
Unrelated, at this point I think Russia is copying the Republicans and not vice versa.
We have to execute them because we have to execute them. They’re making us.
trollhattan
@germy shoemangler: Fingers crossed because it could not be better or more on point. Will has been an old man since he was fourteen. I still recall a piece he did that ultimately blamed society’s ills on dungarees.

@trollhattan:
Lockjaw Kermit the frog.
That’s always been my nickname for him.
Ken
@germy shoemangler: I expect someone will dig through Wills’ older articles and find one demanding the real police show up when 8th-graders wear t-shirts with slogans he doesn’t like. Or wear their pants too low.
Baud
@germy shoemangler:
I agree with Wills that the Pronoun Police have gone to far, but who has the courage to take on their union?
PJ
@Baud: All it takes is one good guy with the proper referent to take down a bad guy with a pronoun.
Ken
@PJ: Grammar puns are the worst.
No, I take that back; sausage puns are the wurst.
JoyceH
Yay! The Biden Administration has ditched the tacky Trump design for the new AF1.

@JoyceH: What, no gilding?

He’s an asshole, but his surname is Will, not Wills.

Also meant to say I appreciate the post. Haven’t thought about Wim Wenders in quite some time.
Booger
@Ken: Or German cheese puns; we could have a wurst-caese scenario on our hands.

Here’s the first Julee Cruise song I ever heard, and it’s still my favorite:

The brief saxophone solo is sublime.

RIP Julee.

@JoyceH: One of Jen Psaki’s great moments early in Biden’s term was when she assured a questioner that to that point Joe Biden had not spent one instant thinking about Air Force One’s paint job.
I guess he got around to it. The classic Kennedy-era livery design is certainly a good sight better than the boring one Trump was considering
I’ve heard the bigger conundrum is what to do when the modified 757s usually used as Air Force Two (and sometimes as AF1, if the venue can’t handle a 747) need replacement. That model isn’t manufactured any more, but its overpowered nature that isn’t really matched by modern jetliners makes it particularly well-suited to the job.

June 10th is the anniversary of the passing of Luís de Camões, greatest poet of the Portuguese language, thus the national day of Portugal.
The usual celebrations along Ferry Avenue in Newark – main street of Lusophone North America – have been dampened by epidemic. Still, would like to wish all jackals and other readers a Happy Portugal Day

OT, but is anyone else getting an explosion of spam cell phone calls? 28 (so far) in 5 hours. I had to turn on Silence Unknown Callers to concentrate on anything else…

Alchoholics Anonymous Founders weekend in Akron Ohio. A big deal. Thousands of people. Many on motorcycles. All of them sober and mostly wholesome and friendly. Hopefully masked but probably not.
I really like this event.

I don’t know how this slipped under the radar, but the City of Kyiv has revoked the decree of Yuriy Dolhoruky from 1147 establishing the city of moscow. The decree is subtitled “Concerning the renewal of historic fairness and the correction of mistakes by prior higher administrators [could be ‘rulers’ – ed.] of the city of Kyiv.”
sab
@Gin & Tonic: Yikes!?
Baud
@Gin & Tonic:
In hindsight, the Dolhoruky decree was a mistake.
Immanentize
I didn’t even need to see the clip —
“You are on your own, Claire.”
Great movie/movies in one.
Sad about Julee Cruz. Of course I have her album.
Immanentize
@Gin & Tonic: Excellent trolling of the very finest vintage.
prostratedragon
@germy shoemangler: Not the first I heard from her, but the one where I decided I rather liked her. This one used later in the same episode was the knockout for me: “The World Spins”.
Gin & Tonic
@Baud: Well, the actual (current) decree refers to it as “a historical misunderstanding.”
In more current news, Lithuania is talking about revoking the Treaty of Polyanovka (1634.)
Immanentize
@Immanentize:
Sorry, autocorrect from Cruise to Cruz. Wonder why?
JaySinWA
@Immanentize: Autocorrect remembers your usage. Your secret texting with Ted is safe with us.

Thanks for spotlighting Julee Cruise here and the Wenders movie which I first saw at a local art house theater. I don’t have a lot of soundtracks in my music library , but I have this one and still play it a few times a year because I’m a human from Earth.

Not sure what it says that I saw Elvis and assumed it meant Elvis Costello. Maybe that my subconscious has done its best to forget the racist AF Presley.
