In May 2022, my family and I took our first trip home to see my parents and brother and his fam since pre-pandemic. We spent two nights at Jumbo Rocks campground and it was spectacular. Our first mistake was bringing a pile of Long Islanders who hadn’t seen the sun since last fall to the high desert. We sunscreened like crazy and still got pretty pink! Our second mistake was thinking we could bring a pile of kids between 5 and 14 years old to some huge boulders and not have 17 heart attacks. They have no fear!

Middle son, eh? Between 5 and 14, eh? So, about 12, eh? That’s an aggressive amount of hair! Also, excellent pictures from the desert. Thanks for taking us there

Excellent photos! Looking forward to going back to JT at some point.

I visited in ’93, beautiful destination….109°F in the shade! Never felt so surrounded by life than I did there, in a desert, plus the added thrill of tramping around what looked to me like a giant old school Star Trek set.

Very cool! The big rocks remind me of our Elephant Rock Park here in MO.

Beautiful pics of a beautiful place.
Joshua Tree has become a rock climbing mecca. My son spent a long wkend climbing there. I expect that will become a yearly ritual for him like TAG was for me.

@OzarkHillbilly: Did you attend the NSS national convention when it was held in Sewanee in the 80s?
Anyway
Great adventure. Thanks for sharing.

@Nelle: @Betty: it was FREEZING but I’m so happy I wriggled out of my tent and got it!
Benw
@OzarkHillbilly: Yeah I was surprised how much climbing there was!

Nice pics! And an interesting landscape with a fun story to go with it. I hiked in Arches National Park once — we had a similar experience with the sun and heat. It’s a big adjustment coming straight from the east coast.

Thank you for these beautiful pics!

Thanks for the memories. We went to Joshua Tree as little kids, I remember scrambling on the rocks, and my brother getting stuck, too scared to climb down. No injuries resulted, surprisingly.

Kids and rocks. We did the same when I was a kid. As soon as we saw Devil’s Den in Gettysburg…

Ah, yes, Joshua Tree where Phil Kaufman burned Gram Parsons’ body in 1973

Just beautiful. Always thought of Joshua Tree as desert; did not realize it had such spectacular rock formations. Skull Rock!
The kids may have given you heart attacks, but they will always remember this trip.
