Occidental College is a small liberal arts college situated on a hillside in the LA community of Eagle Rock. It was founded in 1887 in Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles, after that building burned down, they moved to Highland Park. The Highland Park campus consisted of 3 buildings(one of which is still standing and is now an apartment building). The Highland Park campus’ small size and it close proximity to a Santa Fe rail line soon prompted the board of trustees to consider a move to another location and they chose a hillside in the community of Eagle Rock a few miles north.
I’ve never visited Oxy, though I’ve lived in Glendale just to Eagle Rock’s west for 35 years. So, on a sunny afternoon(good for IR), I headed to Oxy to get some shots. It’s really a pretty campus and while small, I found myself getting a bit lost on occasion. I didn’t make it all the way up the hill, but I’ll return and try to on my next visit.
The campus may look familiar, it’s been used for many movies and TV series. The most notable alumnus is probably former Congressman and Secretary of HUD, Jack Kemp. He was a star quarterback for their football team and the stadium is named for him. While he didn’t graduate from Oxy, President Obama spent his first 2 college years at Oxy before transferring to Columbia.
