Not great:

… Vaccinated patients with Omicron BA.1 breakthrough infections developed antibodies that could neutralize that virus plus the original SARS-CoV-2 virus, but the Omicron sublineages circulating now have mutations that allow them to evade those antibodies, researchers from China reported on Friday in Nature.

Omicron BA.2.12.1, which is presently causing most infections in the United States, and Omicron BA.5 and BA.4, which now account for more than 21% of new U.S. cases, contain mutations not present in the BA.1 and BA.2 versions of Omicron.

Those newer sublineages “notably evade the neutralizing antibodies elicited by SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination,” the researchers found in test-tube experiments.

The monoclonal antibody drugs bebtelovimab from Eli Lilly and cilgavimab, a component of AstraZeneca’s Evusheld, can still effectively neutralize BA.2.12.1 and BA.4/BA.5, the experiments also showed.

But vaccine boosters based on the BA.1 virus, such as those in development by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, “may not achieve broad-spectrum protection against new Omicron variants,” the researchers warned…

This is so important on many levels. Long COVID is a legacy that is not well understood, often ignored and has left many less able to work and participate in the economy, notably women. Relieved to see a possible reduction with an even more contagious variant and sub-variants. https://t.co/2p9pRJZyHb

Good! You deserve a whole bunch of days off. These threads have been an invaluable service to us jackals. They’ve been my first morning read almost since the beginning.

But tbh, a lot less is changing from one day to the next than was true for the first two years of this plague. You shouldn’t feel you have to do this every day.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 2,130 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, for a cumulative reported total of 4,536,795 cases. It also reported one death for an adjusted cumulative total of 35,731 deaths – 0.79% of the cumulative reported total, 0.79% of resolved cases.

There were 25,626 active cases yesterday, 1,049 more than the day before. 993 were in hospital. 35 confirmed cases were in ICU; of these patients, 19 confirmed cases were on ventilators. Meanwhile, 1,080 more patients have recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,475,438 patients recovered – 98.6% of the cumulative reported total.

All 2,130 new cases reported yesterday were local infections. No new cases were imported.

The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) administered 15,638 doses of vaccine on 17th June: 785 first doses, 13,606 second doses, and 1,247 booster doses. The cumulative total is 71,113,497 doses administered: 28,016,546 first doses, 27,185,4333 second doses, and 16,126,295 booster doses. 85.7% of the population have received their first dose, 83.2% their second dose, and 49.4% their booster dose.

US cases are down 9% in the past week to 101,000. Hospitalizations have continued to increase by 6% in the past week to 31,300. Deaths are back down to 305.

The regional trends remain the same: in the Northeast, Midatlantic, and upper Midwest where the BA.2.12.1 wave was most prevalent, cases continue to decline. Across the southern tier, high Plains and Rockies where it wasn’t, cases are at a plateau.

For now I disagree that BA.4/5 will cause a new wave in the US later this summer, based on a comparison with Europe. Europe did not have the BA.2.12.1 wave this spring; it’s last wave was last winter. BA.4/5 are already about 25% of all cases in the US, and haven’t caused a big outbreak yet. We should know within a couple of weeks whether that holds.

Adding my vote that you more than deserve a day off, Anne Laurie. And if you want to make taking certain days off permanent, you have my blessing.

I suppose a lot of the work is in scanning the internet for new developments and I can see why you might think you can’t get too far behind at that. But cutting and pasting and sequencing all those links to create a post is also time consuming.

What I am trying to say is, this post and thread is one of my first stops every morning, I feel very indebted to you for arming me with information I need to keep me and my family as safe as possible.

    @Spanky:  +1

There’s so little official daily data in the USA now that a weekly roundup makes sense to me. Bill McBride at CalculatedRiskBlog has been doing daily data dumps of weekly averages for a very long time, but it’s just a table and a graph that he updates every day.

The pandemic is not over, but the healthcare system is coping. While too many state and national politicians have decided that burying up-to-date numbers will make everything better, it seems like weekly changes and averages are still meaningful.

Thanks for all your efforts, AL.

    Stay safe, everyone.

    June 18, 2022 at 5:03 pm

I’m still holding out hope that all this long covid research will also lead to serious breakthroughs on fibromyalgia (which Ms. Redshift suffers from) and chronic fatigue syndrome. Even if it can overcome the tendency of medical professionals to dismiss them as not “real” diseases, that would be a start. But I know one of the thrusted causes was fragments of Epstein-Barr or another virus stimulating the immune system, so maybe we’re on the verge of learning a lot more about that whole mechanism.
