Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Everybody saw this coming.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

No one could have predicted…

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

We will not go back.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

“I trusted Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh when they testified under oath that they also believed Roe v. Wade was settled legal precedent and I am alarmed they chose to reject the stability the ruling has provided for two generations of Americans,” Manchin said in a statement Friday.

Pleased that Biden noted Roe is on the ballot in November. I’m not sure how much GOTV momentum we can get from this, but damn it, we have to try.

Biden also called out Thomas by name for threatening rights on contraception and gay rights. Said the court is on a dangerous path. Asks that protests remain peaceful.

    @JPL: What is it?

Power Over Others. That’s what animated turning Chattel Slavery into full-bore Racism. It’s what has fueled  Patriarchal attitudes for millennia now. And it’s what has led to LGBTQIA+ people being pushed to the margins of so many cultures, for far too long.

All of this is fueled in modern America by finally trying to make America as open and honest as we’ve said we were from the Founders, on. But, just as said Founders didn’t want even poor whites to vote in many cases, so today do many profess to believe in American ideas, but only so long as the exercise of those ideals allows them to stay in power.

Every Backlash comes from allowing a group to share in power.

My hope: Biden addresses the nation on the 4th of July, and actual use of the Bully Pulpet lays out that the SCTOUS is inventing rights for the 2nd amendment, but removing others, and lays out a slate of legislation that addresses these issues and asks for public support and notes all of the stances are approved by 60+% of the country.

Fuck, note that the Founding Fathers were pro-abortion.

@schrodingers_cat: It will drive Dem turnout for sure, but also Republicans alarmed about expanding the court or passing a national law to codify Roe.

Thanks to Clueless Clarence tying the decision into birth control and privacy, I think a lot of otherwise disengaged Dem-leaners will join us usual suspects. So, advantage 21st century types.

I just found out that NYS reapportionment has stuck me with Elise Stefanik as my rep. Needless to say, I intend to fight for team Blue, even though the seat is considered likely GOP.

I dug around YouTube for that clip from the beginning of the third Indiana Jones movie – where the mercenary tells Indy “you lost today, kid, but that doesn’t mean you have to like it”, and gives him the Hat.

I’m just not sure it’s appropriate. It feels trite to me. And it feels like I’m not the best judge, given that I have no uterus and am therefore not a first-order victim of the Dobbs decision.

For years there have been a lot of “socially liberal, fiscally conservative” independents and Republicans that have voted GOP for deregulation and tax cuts while assuming that Roe and other important civil rights were relatively safe, because, you know, “precedent” and all that. Well, all that lies in ashes now. So the question is, are these people — mostly probably fairly privileged white people — going to shrug their shoulders and continue voting for tax cuts, especially if they’re in a “safe” blue state — or are they going to freak out, especially over Thomas’s opinion, and start voting Dem, or at least withhold their vote and $$ from anti-choice Republicans?

I’m certain it’s the latter. I’ve seen it called the “ick factor”. Few people are willing to admit that gayness puts them in a near-homicidal rage only because it squicks them out.

My reading of Leviticus is that the author didn’t disapprove of homosexuality per se; they disapproved of men not having sex with women for any reason because the Hebrew tribe needed more Hebrews. Population mattered in a place where tribes competed with each other. Come to think of it, that’s how today’s white-wingers feel.

@JPL: Gay men upset the patriarchy. We upset the idea that a man is lord of his manor and brood.

The wildly inappropriate question of who does what to whom (yes, in the 90s straight people actually asked that) is a stand in for the real question: How can you ‘be a man’ if you share power with an equal?!

Follow on is (eek): Surely one of you is submissive, and hence the woman and of low rank and power, and a betrayal of manhood.

So, surprise, homophobia is at least partly misogyny, shifted.
