In case you’re new to Medium Cool, BGinCHI is here once a week to offer a thread on culture, mainly film & books, with some TV thrown in. We’re here at 7 pm on Sunday nights.
At the beginning of April we went to a local shelter and got a cat. The boy is 10, promises were made, etc. As someone raised in rural America, I’ve never been a cat person or owner, though there have been several cats I’ve been fond of (one my mother had a decade ago, a litter of strays we adopted when I lived briefly in Virginia). Cats were always in the barn, or wild, and always outside. So I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect.
It didn’t take long for me to be totally smitten by her. She’s affectionate, loves to play, can be very feisty, and will happily fetch a ball when she feels like it. She’d just had a litter and was in a pound before the shelter got her, and we adopted her the first day. She was kind of out of it, but quickly snapped into her best self.
I think I might be a cat person now.
So, for this week’s Medium Cool, let’s talk cats and their representation in books, movies, TV, and anywhere else they appear. I’d be particularly interested in portrayals of cats that get them just right (like when they’re playing with a ball and you’re watching and they go from excited to shy in nothing flat).
