Commenters were mentioning this in the thread below, but in case you missed it:
The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol will hold a hearing Tuesday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
The committee, in a statement, said it will “present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony” during this hearing. The previously-unannounced meeting will be the panel’s sixth in a series.

India is truly entering dark times. From proto-fascist to full bore fascism.
Mohammed Zubair the co-founder of a fact checking platform Alt.News has been arrested
As has Teesta Setalvad who has worked tirelessly to highlight Modi’s culpability in 2002 pogrom in Gujarat.

Any clue (or guess) about what the J6 hearing will cover tomorrow?
My guess: it will be clips from and testimony about Unprecedented.

I wonder what prompted this. I’ll bet it is all new stuff, and it is mind blowing.

@Scout211: Mike Pence? Mo Brooks? Someone who DEMANDED EQUAL TIME?
MSNBC is flummoxed about the secrecy and haste.

Knowing who is on the committee, I can only assume an out-of-nowhere, surprise hearing is a very good thing.

Makes me wonder if Discovery+ was going to start rolling out promo footage of the documentary and the committee wanted to get their take on it out there before everyone could play twitter sleuth and muddy the waters.

@Scout211: that’s Marcy Wheeler’s speculation
Seems plausible. The committee seems to have a very good feel for how to release information

@O. Felix Culpa: I would argue that this should be called proto-fascism at this stage.
I don’t see any real advocacy for fascism as a political philosophy. None of these people would call themselves fascists. But they are happy to employ all of the methods of fascism.
It’s a minor distinction but its one that will be used probably pretty aggressively to discredit the folks calling them fascists. I’m guessing it’s just a matter of time before they start to drop the facade and start advocating for fascism outright, but in the US they’ll just be ‘conservatives’ because let’s be honest here, that’s not a political philosophy.

Ian Stewart had quite the chin. I have the Boogie for Stu cd, whereby boogie piano Ben Waters and his band raised money for Stewart. The key Stones guest on it. Good stuff. Charlie himself played with that band–the A, B, C and D of Boogie.

@Martin: I once had a white supremacist argue with me on Twitter because I had called him a Nazi. As with that interaction, I am not really interested in debating whether these people are proto-fascists or full fat, whole milk, actual fascists.

@Martin: It clears things up for me to think of fascism as a process rather than as an artifact – to perform fascism, for instance. That way it doesn’t have to meet a precise list of technical criteria in order to be recognized for the flow of its historical and ongoing effects.
@O. Felix Culpa: Or just this.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): My approach is philosophical; to pursue principles that can define, contain, and supersede the continuing remnants of supremacy in every form. There are things all of us do that have tiny splinters of it embedded in as assumptions, and the more we observe and question those, the less territory it has to hide in.
This is what’s meant by systemic racism, for instance – things we don’t even realize we’re doing to gently and politely shut others out on the basis of casual prejudice, even those assigned the same as us, and things that we therefore have the opportunity to change. It may just mean getting a little less comfortable for a bit until we settle into each new context. It’s work, but work that’s available for each of us to do.
edit: To elaborate a bit more, when we talk about “fascists” or “nazis”, we could mean those who are so consumed by prejudice that they consistently direct their actions towards putting prejudice into policy. The ones who recruit by putting it into subtext or even explicit articles-of-secession-style wording, even more so. But it’s not about them. That’s their biggest mistake. It’s about what they’re doing.
Betty Cracker
My guess is the hearing is about the documentary to forestall more leaks from promos (as was said above). Seems unlikely the committee would hastily put together a hearing for people who would essentially be hostile witnesses (Cipollone or Brooks) since I assume that takes a lot more prep. In fact, going by what I read about Brooks’ conditions, the committee should tell him to fuck off or pursue unconditional cooperation via subpoena.
Captain C
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): For Russians, the sin of the Nazi party was invading Russia (yes, the USSR, but for all intents and purposes the same thing here). The genocide, anti-Semitism, and conquering of places not formerly in the Russian Empire or as part of the spoils of Molotov-Ribbentrop are non-issues as far as they are concerned. Thus, when they accuse someone of being a Nazi, it just means anti-Russian, regardless of their politics.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Captain C: from what I’ve read, Russians use “Nazi” the way Republicans use “Communist” and “Socialist”. It just means “Peoples I hates!”

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Resist the use of *your* labels and embrace theirs. They’re still very reliant on ‘conservatism’ having this soft edge about it. In a way, calling them fascists allows them to deny that they horrible things they want are ‘conservative’, so give them that. Be very thoughtful about what you ascribe to ‘conservatism’, ‘Republicans’ and so on. This is just branding, and they don’t want the bad stuff associated with the brand, so choose your words so that the are unavoidably connected.
In other words, don’t give them the chance to deny they are fascists, make them deny that having kids murdered at school is a part of conservative philosophy.
Jackie

Seems to be a great deal of cognitive dissonance among many non-fascists, that somehow we’ll still have all the nice things and democracy etc. is just politics. That our societal wealth is ala carte and not interconnected, pick and choose the things you like. We don’t have enough simple examples of what throwing out the government means. even safe air travel and pure food and safe cars seem to be too abstract for these folk. Maybe the first time they have to slip a bribe to get their fishing license.
CCL
@Martin:
Thanks, Martin. This is a really important point. Tarnish the brand.
livewyre
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): The distinction is: it’s not because of what the Nazis did, but because of who they were. Attacking Russia (and breaking the pact) just showed who they were. In that model, whatever the “right ones” do is right, and whatever the “wrong ones” do is wrong. Then you just have to make sure the atrocities are restricted to the “right” targets.
Right now, Ukraine as a national identity is the target, and associating them with Nazis is just a way of marking them as the “wrong ones”. That means anything that happens to them can be excused in order to consider oneself “right”, from the same standpoint that excuses anything the Nazis did that wasn’t against Russia. Actions become irrelevant – only identity counts.

@O. Felix Culpa: Fascism ultimately fails – it provides nothing to the population except more and more rules. Nobody likes being caged.

Stu wasn’t kicked out of the Rolling Stones, exactly. He stayed on as a recording/touring sideman, and as tour manager, until the end of his life. Andrew Loog Oldham thought him too ugly for the Stones; but he cofounded the band, and was essential to its sound. Keef still considers it Stu’s band.

@cain: It can take a long time. The totally-not-fascism of Francisco Franco hung on for decades and still has Spanish fans. It only fell when it did because of a lucky break depending on one guy (turned out the new King was just pretending to be a good Falangist).
As did the herrenvolk republic in South Africa, which is probably closer to what our Republicans want.
