Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

This fight is for everything.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

Optimism opens the door to great things.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Guangdong Province reported 1 new domestic asymptomatic (at Heyuan) case, a traced close contact under centralized quarantine. There currently are 13 active domestic confirmed & 28 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot traced the active domestic cases in each jurisdictions due to multiple clusters at the same time.

At Fangchenggang in Guangxi “Autonomous” Region 4 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 15 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.

At Wuhan in Hubei Province there currently are 2 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.

At Inner Mongolia “Autonomous” Region 6 domestic confirmed & 5 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 8 active domestic confirmed (7 at Xilingol League & 1 at Chifeng) & 5 active domestic asymptomatic (all at Xilingol League) cases in the region.

Xi’an in Shaanxi Province reported 1 new domestic confirmed & 10 new domestic asymptomatic cases, 7 traced close contacts under centralized quarantine & 4 via community screening. The cluster is centered at a recycled materials exchange, & an associated art gallery that houses air works make from recycled materials. The outbreak is of the BA.5.2 strain, which is new to China in terms of domestic spread. The authorities believe that the cluster is seeded by importation from overseas, but the actual pathway remains unknown. There currently are 11 active confirmed & 18 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city. 9 sites are currently at High Risk, & 10 at Medium Risk.

Qingdao in Shandong Province reported 1 new domestic confirmed (previously asymptomatic) case. There currently are 19 active domestic confirmed & 25 domestic asymptomatic cases.

Liaoning Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. 9 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 52 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by administrative divisions, I cannot track the count of active cases in administrative divisions, given the multiple simultaneous outbreaks. 13 sites at Dandong are currently at High Risk, & 8 sites at Medium Risk. 1 area at Dalian is currently at High Risk, & 1 area at Medium Risk.

Jilin Province did not report any new domestic positive cases.

    • At Jilin City there currently are 16 active domestic asymptomatic cases.

Beijing Municipality reported 5 new domestic confirmed & 1 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. The new cluster is seeded by a person who came from Taiwan, passed through 7 days of centralized quarantine at Shanghai before traveling to Beijing, & tested positive during at home health monitoring period. 2 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. The municipality is not publishing the count of active domestic positive cases there. 3 sites are currently at High Risk, & 3 at Medium Risk.

Tianjin Municipality reported 5 new domestic asymptomatic cases. The new cluster is seeded by an imported case coming from the US, who had entered China at Shanghai & passed through 7 days of centralized quarantine, before returning to Tianjin via high speed rail on 7/3, the case had developed mil symptoms early on 7/3 & tested positive during at home monitoring period on 7/4. The 5 domestic positive cases are all family members & relatives of the imported case, all traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. 1 domestic asymptomatic case recovered. There currently are 15 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city. 5 sites are currently at High Risk, & 2 at Medium Risk.

Shanghai Municipality reported 9 new domestic confirmed & 15 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. The new cluster is centered around a series of KTVs. 1 domestic confirmed & 2 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There were 0 new deaths. There currently are 30 active domestic confirmed (none serious) in the city. The city is no longer publishing the number of active asymptomatic cases. 7 sites are currently at High Risk & 28 at Medium Risk.

Anhui Province reported 81 new domestic confirmed (34 previously asymptomatic) & 141 new domestic asymptomatic cases. There currently are 266 active domestic confirmed & 1,002 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province.

Ashley Comegys, a parent of two young children in Florida, was ecstatic when the Covid vaccines were authorized for children above the age of six months in the US. “We’ve been waiting for this for so long,” she said. “We can finally start to spread our wings again.”

But then she learned that Florida had missed two deadlines to preorder vaccines and would not make them available through state and local health departments, delaying the rollout by several weeks and significantly limiting access.

“Rage does not adequately describe how I felt that they were basically inhibiting me from being able to make a choice to protect my children,” Comegys said.
    ………………………………………….
“I called probably 20 pharmacies and pediatricians in our area” – including across the state line, said Sheryl Peters, a parent of an 18-month-old and a four-year-old in Tennessee.

Even after the vaccines were authorized for this age group, her local health officials didn’t know when they would arrive, and they directed her to the state health department, who told her it would be a few weeks, she said. She was crying on the phone, begging for help, but “nobody knew anything,” she said. “It was so, so disorganized.”

    –

While Tennessee did pre-order vaccines, the rollout has been slow and complicated. And the confusion could deepen.

Four Republican lawmakers in Tennessee are petitioning the governor, Bill Lee, to ignore the federal recommendations on vaccinating children under five and to ban state health departments from “distributing, promoting or recommending” the vaccines, creating uncertainty in the state’s approach to vaccinating some of its youngest residents.

Tennessee stopped all vaccination outreach to teens – not just around the Covid vaccines – in 2021.

    Pro-Life my ass.

@There go two miscreants: We know where the buck stops in Florida.

In March, Florida’s department of health recommended against Covid vaccines for all healthy children. Florida is “affirmatively against the Covid vaccine for young kids”, DeSantis said at a press conference on 16 June, despite ample evidence of the vaccines’ safety and efficacy.

So a question for the hive mind as I look at scheduling my second booster: Pfizer like the last three shots, or should I mix it up and go with Moderna for this round? It looks like I can schedule myself for either one today, tomorrow, or later this week, etc. (I might go with tomorrow after my dentist appointment)

@OzarkHillbilly: and then it makes the kids scared to get it.  My nephew was freaking out over it, like he was going up before the firing squad kind of shot, before the nurse told him that it could be in his arm or his leg and they weren’t going to leave the needle in him.   My sibling put it as “ it was like he had the blindfold and the last cigarette, and then he got the reprieve.”

    July 6, 2022 at 9:02 am

@Kayla Rudbek: There’s some evidence that mix-and-match is more effective than getting all of the shots with one formulation, but if memory serves it’s not a huge difference. If there’s no difference in scheduling/ease of getting the shot/etc., may as well go with the Moderna. One down side is that the side effects tend to be a bit stronger with Moderna, but that’s “a day or three feeling crappy” at worst, so not a huge issue.

@dmsilev: I went with Moderna after three Pfizers and my arm hurt for a couple of days, which I found no big deal. I found the soreness reassuring, I took it to mean my immune system was doing its thing.

I am under the impression there’s no real data (yet) on whether switching up the vaccines does much but I don’t think it can do any harm.

The CDC reported yesterday that BA.4&5 now make up 70% of all US COVID cases, with BA.2.12.1 making up almost the entire remaining 30%.

Despite that, there has been no sign of a renewed wave in cases whatsoever. Nationwide cases remain in their recent range at 110,000. A few States, notably TX, NY, and NJ, are showing a slight increase over the last week. Biobot has not updated its wastewater information in a week, but as of that time showed no increase.

Hospitalizations continued to rise to 37,400. Deaths declined to 255. The death figures may be distorted by lack of reporting over the long holiday weekend.

BA.4&5 are going to be 90% of all cases in about two weeks. If there continues to be no increase in cases during that time, there is not going to be any “wave” from them at all.

The increase in hospitalizations *is* puzzling, however, especially since deaths have not increased. I have not read of any explanation. It seems like BA.4&5 may be more virulent than BA.2.12.1, but that medical treatments are effective in preventing deaths.

Meanwhile the next variant of concern is BA.2.76, which appeared in India and is now showing up in random samples globally, and appears to be even more transmissible than BA.2 was.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 2,932 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, for a cumulative reported total of 4,578,741 cases. It also reported three deaths for an adjusted cumulative total of 35,787 deaths – 0.78% of the cumulative reported total, 0.79% of resolved cases.

There were 30,019 active cases yesterday, 637 more than the day before. 1,238 were in hospital. 42 confirmed cases were in ICU; of these patients, 25 confirmed cases were on ventilators. Meanwhile, 2,292 more patients have recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,512,935 patients recovered – 98.6% of the cumulative reported total.

2,930 new cases reported yesterday were local infections. Two new cases were imported.

The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) administered 5,576 doses of vaccine on 5th July: 230 first doses, 4,317 second doses, and 1,029 booster doses. The cumulative total is 71,279,515 doses administered: 28,044,208 first doses, 27,301,377 second doses, and 16,149,304 booster doses. 85.9% of the population have received their first dose, 83.6% their second dose, and 49.5% their booster dose.

I check a few stat websites daily as part of my morning routine, a routine that also includes reading this update (Thanks, Anne!). Unfortunately, the data are proving to be increasingly unreliable and incomplete. The growth of home testing, which generally is not reported, the drop in state testing and reporting (deliberate in some states), the lack of coordination and resources … how the hell am I supposed to make good decisions without the data to guide those decisions?

  18. 18.

    Matt McIrvin

    July 6, 2022 at 10:21 am

    @PaulB: There’s still wastewater sampling:

    https://biobot.io/data/

This obviously isn’t available everywhere, but where it is, it provides a pretty rapid and individual-behavior-independent metric of how much virus is about

I use it as a sanity check on claims about how the current pandemic wave is going–there were some recent extraordinary claims that, once you take undertesting into account, it’s secretly as big as the winter Omicron wave, and I think the wastewater sampling is a pretty clear indication that this is not true. Wastewater sampling does tend to make the early waves in 2020-21 look smaller than they were because with those variants, infected people pumped out less virus.

    @PaulB: Two points:

    1. Wastewater doesn’t lie. Here’s a link to Biobot’s data:

    https://biobot.io/data/

Take a look for yourself. The levels and trends are obvious.

    2. We’ve had at-home testing for 6 months now. There is no evidence that a higher or lower percentage of people are relying on home tests than several months ago. Thus the *trend* in reported confirmed cases should still be reliable, even if the level is not.

    Hope that is helpful.

I started having a very sore throat on Saturday at our July 4 family gathering, and started testing the next day.  Finally got a PCR test yesterday.  All negative.  Covid hasn’t eliminated other common and garden viruses.  Still glad I don’t have to call up the entire extended family to warn them to get tested.

Potato. Tomato. Covid. All seem to be growing in this summer season.

Some say this. Some say that. Opinions vary.
There are indications and contradictions causing confusion.
“Almost as contagious as measles.”  “A new wave is forming.”

Contagious and deadly. A summer wedding.

The confirmed case at Heyuan was previously asymptomatic, & the asymptomatic case is a traced close contact under centralized quarantine. Both cases at Shenzhen were found via community screening. There currently are 14 active domestic confirmed & 29 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot traced the active domestic cases in each jurisdictions due to multiple clusters at the same time. 2 sites at Shenzhen are currently at Medium Risk.
