Washington (CNN)Former House Speaker Paul Ryan was “sobbing” as he watched the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol unfold on television, a new book reports.

Ryan, who has criticized former President Donald Trump and his hold on the Republican Party, “found himself sobbing” during the insurrection, journalist Mark Leibovich writes in his forthcoming book, “Thank You For Your Servitude,” a copy of which was obtained by CNN.

“I spent my whole adult life in that building,” Ryan, who served as a Republican congressman from Wisconsin for two decades, later told Leibovich, according to the book. “And I saw my friends, a lot of cops, some of my old security detail — I’m still friends with a bunch of those guys. It really disturbed me, foundationally.”

Not “foundationally” enough to quit his lucrative board gig with the media conglomerate that was instrumental in elevating an unstable person to the presidency and then circulating lies and disinformation about the election that helped gin up the mob, however.

In a sense, Ryan is a worse person and a greater danger to America than the deranged members of the mob who beat cops with flag poles and smeared shit on the walls. At least those feral assholes were sincere enough about their delusions to put their asses on the line for it. They earned their punishment.

Ryan is one of the many cynical Republican shitbags who harnessed the lunacy of the Trump movement to realize his undergraduate “austerity for thee and profits for me” dreams. Fuck him and his tears.
