Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When we show up, we win.

Bark louder, little dog.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Great Find: CNET Has a Great Recap of All 6 Hearings So Far

As I was searching for links for Jan 6 Haring #7 today, I stumbled on this great CNET Recap of all 6 hearings so far.  You have to scroll down the page a bit to get to the heart of it all.

CNET has a great recap of all 6 hearings!

What did the committee reveal in the first hearing?

The first hearing, on June 9, gave an overview of what to expect while also showing never-before-seen deposition testimony and footage from the Capitol riot.

Committee chairman Rep. Thompson, and Rep. Liz Cheney, the committee vice chairwoman and a Republican from Wyoming, spoke throughout the two-hour hearing. They revealed how officials from Trump’s administration didn’t believe his claims of voter fraud, how multiple Republican members of Congress sought presidential pardons for their roles in trying to overturn the election, and how, when the mob chanted “Hang Mike Pence,” the vice president, Trump said: “He deserves it.”

The second half of the hearing included testimony from two witnesses: documentary filmmaker Nick Quested and Capitol police officer Caroline Edwards.

(much more at the link)

What did the second hearing tell us?

The June 13 hearing looked at the false claims made by Trump and his administration that the 2020 presidential election was supposedly stolen, which has been dubbed the “Big Lie.”

Video testimony from former White House attorney Eric Herschmann, former White House staff secretary Derek Lyons, former Attorney General Bill Barr and others, played during the hearing, showed those officials confirming there was no basis for the claims of election fraud.

(much more at the link)

What was the third hearing about?

Almost the entire hearing on June 16 was about Pence. The committee detailed how the former vice president didn’t have the authority to stop the counting of electoral votes. John Eastman, an attorney who was advising Trump, promoted a legal theory of Pence having this power, although it isn’t established in the Constitution.

(much more at the link)

What happened in the fourth hearing?

The committee first heard the testimony of Rusty Bowers, speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, in the fourth hearing on June 21. He testified on how Trump and his lawyer at the time, Rudy Giuliani, urged Bowers to agree to put forth pro-Trump electors instead of the legitimate electors the state was already going to send to DC. Bowers also said two Republican members of Congress asked him to support Trump’s plan to decertify Biden’s victory, which he didn’t agree to.

After a recess, the committee heard testimony from Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, his deputy Gabe Sterling along with Georgia election workers Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman.

(much more at the link)

What was revealed in the fifth hearing?

The June 23 hearing featured witness testimony from Jeffrey A. Rosen, the former acting attorney general; Richard Donoghue, the former acting deputy attorney general; and Steven Engel, the former assistant attorney general for the office of legal counsel. All three testified about the pressure they received from the White House to indulge Trump’s false claims that the election was stolen from him.

(much more at the link)

What happened in the sixth hearing?

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide for White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified on June 28 about the events on and leading up to Jan. 6, 2021. In the days before the riot, Hutchinson says, there were concerns about how “things might get real, real bad on January 6.” On the day of, she says she heard Trump was warned that some rioters attending his speech at the Ellipse had weapons. Also, the former president had demanded the Secret Service remove the metal detectors, referred to as “mags,” in order to allow more people to be in the crowd. She said Trump said of those with weapons, “they’re not here to hurt me.”

Okay, I had this scheduled for earlier but then Anne Laurie put up a post shortly before this was scheduled, so I moved it back.  Then David’s post went up shortly before the re-scheduled time, so I moved it again.

So I’m just leaving this one up now because the recap should definitely come before today’s hearing.

“they’re not here to hurt me.”

Just to indicate how much of an idiot TFG is, it would be easy for someone who DID intend to hurt him to slip in with the armed insurrectionists and put the kibosh on Mango Mussolini.

I am SHOOK by the JWST images, holy Lord.

The Carina Nebula. JFC. I know I’m probably in the minority here as being someone who believes wholeheartedly in both science and God, but to me, images like this are proof of both. These are the most amazing things I’ve ever seen, and how lucky are we to live in the timeline that gets to experience them?

Too bad we had to share the timeline with Trump.

Call me paranoid but I think the coordinated attack on Biden-Harris in the media is a ruse to drown out these hearings. Our political media bats for team R.

@WaterGirl: Did we learn who the 2 Republican members of congress are?

I don’t think so. Which could be part of a strategy — I suspect more than two tried to do this, so the committee might as well make them all sweat.

@H.E.Wolf: I can’t believe that we heard from Caroline Edwards at the FIRST hearing, and I also can’t believe that Cassidy Hutchinson was in the SIXTH hearing.

Am I the only person who thinks that the Rs didn’t think the Jan 6 committee testimony would have the teeth that it does?  That they thought that the hearings would be more blah-blah-blah?

And then when it turned out that the hearings DID have teeth, and they realized stuff WAS going to get out… that that’s when people started scrambling to contact the committee in hopes of preserving their reputations (ha!) and staying out of jail?

@MagdaInBlack: Funny you should say that. There’s a NEW front in the “HunterBidensLaptop” drama.

Jack Posobiec is publicizing that 4chan “hacked Hunter Biden’s iCloud account” and is putting out 450GB of data. This happened a few days ago. From what I understand, it’s completely unverifiable, they’re claiming that Joe Biden is listed as “Pedo Peter” in Hunter’s contact list, and there’s compromising photos/videos from 2019 of Hunter doing the same things we were already aware of.

So basically… the whole thing makes no sense, can’t be used as any sort of evidence, and likely has fake stuff inserted into it, and still isn’t real news. But will likely still get a lot of Right attention.

@WaterGirl: They were remembering the Benghazi hearings and thought the Democrats would be just as theatrical?  I don’t think any of us were prepared for all that these hearings have delivered.  Thinking back to the first day and how many were concerned with how slowly the chairman spoke and worried they would lose viewers / interest.  :-)

@MisterForkbeard: Trump world is demented. Mr DAW passed by the cafe in my building this morning and saw the TV was tuned to Fox with nobody there watching. He tried to use the channel changer and found someone had yanked the batteries. If someone wants to watch Fox, that’s their sad business. But then deciding that everyone else will watch Fox and only Fox seems lunatic to me.

Btw, Mr DAW raided the container holding people’s discarded batteries and found one that worked.

More details on the role of House GOP members are expected to be revealed today at select committee. The committee plans to mention a Dec. 21 White House meeting with several House members: Mo Brooks, Andy Biggs, Louis Gohmert, Paul Gosar, Andy Harris and others, I’m told

New evidence expected at hearing. Committee has encrypted messages between Trump allies and members of extremist groups, I’m told. And committee expected to show Pat Cipollone discussing December 2020 meeting where Trump allies discussed ways to overturn election, per sources

I don’t watch CNN, but from what I see of Raju on the twitter his reporting is very well-sourced
