According to Biobot, COVID cases rose by 35% in the 2 weeks between June 29 and July 13. This is equivalent to about 140,000 *confirmed* cases. The “real” number is probably closer to about 350,000 (but remember, comparable conditions between confirmed and actual cases have existed for months).
Between weekend lack of reporting, distortions remaining from the July 4 holiday, and a few States’ haphazard reporting schedule, especially Florida, which appears to be on a 14 day schedule, individual State and regional breakdowns are almost impossible. Biobot shows COVID increasing in all 4 regions, in descending growth order the South, Northeast, Midwest, and West.
With those caveats, data indicates that nationwide cases have risen to 135,400. Hospitalizations have risen to 42,900. Deaths are holding at 414.
Tomorrow the CDC will update its variant info. It will almost certainly show BA.4&5 making up about 90% or more of new cases. BA.2.75 does not appear to be significant at this time. The big increase in cases beginning the end of June is only partly due to BA.4&5. At least as much was probably due to July 4 traveling and get-togethers. Typically waves have peaked once there is 90% penetration. The July 4 nationwide superspreader party will probably delay that by perhaps another week. But we are probably at least close to the peak of this wavelet.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 3,936 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, for a cumulative reported total of 4,622,981 cases. It also reported seven deaths for an adjusted cumulative total of 35,855 deaths – 0.78% of the cumulative reported total, 0.78% of resolved cases.
57,250 Covid-19 tests were conducted on 13th July, with a positivity rate of 8.0%.
There were 42,511 active cases yesterday, 30 more than the day before. 1,484 were in hospital. 61 confirmed cases were in ICU; of these patients, 38 confirmed cases were on ventilators. Meanwhile, 3,899 more patients recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,544,615 patients recovered – 98.3% of the cumulative reported total.
3,935 new cases reported yesterday were local infections. One new case was imported.
The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) administered 12,634 doses of vaccine on 17th July: 398 first doses, 5,757 second doses, 809 first booster doses, and 5,670 second booster doses. The cumulative total is 71,820,081 doses administered: 28,057,624 first doses, 27,380,707 second doses, 16,164,047 first booster doses and 217,703 second booster doses. 85.9% of the population have received their first dose, 83.8% their second dose, 49.5% their first booster dose, and 0.7% their second booster dose.

So Dr. Forster doesn’t understand why an industry that was subjected to sometimes sudden closures and capacity restrictions where the basic cost of the things you need to do business has skyrocketed in the past two years (I’m talking double or triple the cost for things like fryer oil and rubber gloves, don’t even ask about chicken wings!), where wages have shot up mightly, and where business is still somewhat down because it’s a high-risk place for Covid hasn’t taken pretty expensive measures that currently have no incentives behind them. *rolleyes* I wish these things were tax-deductible for all businesses – that would be a good thing – but they aren’t, and that stuff can be expensive, especially in an existing building. It’s easy to say “but the downstream effects are worth it”, which is true, but what are you supposed to do when you don’t have the money in the first place and you’re barely keeping your head above water already? It’s just not that easy if the incentives aren’t there. I have to give my city government credit, they installed UV lights to help kill viruses in the heating/air system fairly early in the pandemic. I don’t know how much those units helped.

Rough guesstimate–masking down to maybe 20-25% over all at the few stores I visit in Lake County IL. Medical offices are 100%. Everywhere else bounces up/down depending on location. Still seeing masks on some store clerks. My vet’s office is still doing curbside check-in and coming out to get your pet, but one person can go into an examining room if they’re masked, haven’t been exposed, and keep their distance.

My wife and I are in SW Ontario and continue to mask indoors. We have not eaten inside a restaurant since February 2020. Sometimes it feels like we are the only ones masking, but we know there are others.
We have talked about this with like minded family and friends, and we will continue on this path until we feel comfortable……whenever that might be.
We will not be bullied or shamed into compromising our health.

Wife and I wear masks when we go inside anywhere. Esp Physical Therapy and medical facilities, which all require masks right now, so 100% masked. Krogers also, we’re not the only masked folks there, but it isn’t nearly 100% like it was for a while in the beginning. We have gone out to sit down dinners at our favorite fancy joint twice, last year our 50th anniversary was during a drop in infections, this year same.
We do occasionally eat at a nice Mexican place during their off hours, like lunch at 2:45 after a Dr appointment. Masks are so easy, I don’t understand the resistance. I still hope lots of RWNJs will die of stubborness stupidity, if that is evil I’m OK with that.

I keep seeing more and more masks around town. I have gone back to masking indoors. One of the women in my exercise class was out for a few weeks because of Covid. She was vaccinated, but still almost went into the hospital. Younger, but has asthma. I hope some of our non-boosted classmates take her experience to heart.
I am double boosted, but the way immunity wanes I really hope they come out with something in the fall that I can get. Sometimes being old with chronic conditions is a benefit.

A neighbour couple caught it over a week ago and we heard both coughing hard this morning when we sat outside. She has asthma so I think she’ll have the cough longer but they are feeling better.
Our close friend that we almost got together with 3 times last week (he ended up working late each time) just tested positive. We’d just agreed Saturday morning to meet him and his family at a campsite close by to toast hotdogs and by the afternoon he was feeling really bad, then tested positive. He works outside but his crew is a bunch of RW antimask, pro fascist white males, who gave him lip when Covid first started When he wouldn’t let them sit with him in his work truck without a mask. Lots of them have gotten sick since Covid started and it would have been more of there wasn’t a 3 month work pause over winter (where they all collect unemployment and complain about those lazy others who collect unemployment). Our friend’s job is so hard, paving roads with long, hot days but he says the hardest part is working with these RW idiots.

As the province does not separate recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases at the different jurisdictions, due to the simultaneous outbreaks in different locations. 3 sites at Pingtan are currently at High Risk. 4 sites at Ningde & 1 at Pingtan are currently at Medium Risk.
Jiangxi Province reported 1 new domestic confirmed & 13 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all at Nanchang, 6 traced close contacts under home/centralized quarantine, 7 via screening of residents in areas at elevated risk, & 1 via community screening. 2 domestic confirmed & 2 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 14 active domestic confirmed (all at Nanchang) & 54 active domestic asymptomatic (40 at Nanchang & 1 each at Ji’an & Shangrao) cases in the city. 22 sites are currently at High Risk, & 34 at Medium Risk.
Sichuan Province reported 12 new domestic confirmed (5 previously asymptomatic, 6 at Chengdu, 4 at Meishan, & 1 each at Leshan & Guangyuan) & 12 new domestic asymptomatic (3 at Meishan & 9 at Chengdu) cases. 1 of the cases at Chengdu was previously asymptomatic, the rest are traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. 2 of the cases at Meishan were previously asymptomatic, the rest were found via screening of residents in areas at elevated risk. The cases Leshan & Guangyuan were previously asymptomatic. As the province does not break down recoveries by imported & domestic cases, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases there. 12 sites at Chengdu & 1 at Meishan are currently at High Risk. 14 sites at Chengdu & 2 at Meishan are currently at Medium Risk.
Chongqing Municipality reported 1 new domestic confirmed case, a person coming from elsewhere on 7/15 & testing positive eon 7/17. There currently are 2 active domestic confirmed & 1 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.
At Guiyang in Guizhou Province there currently is 1 active domestic confirmed case in the city.
At Xining in Qinghai Province there currently are 1 active domestic confirmed & 1 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city.
Imported Cases
On 7/18, Mainland China reported 38 new imported confirmed cases (6 previously asymptomatic), 39 imported asymptomatic cases, 0 imported suspect cases:
Overall in Mainland China, 122 confirmed cases recovered (43 imported), 248 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation (42 imported) & 62 were reclassified as confirmed cases (6 imported), & 21,420 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 1,425 active confirmed cases in the country (470 imported), 1 in serious/critical condition (domestic), 4,035 active asymptomatic cases (383 imported), 0 suspect cases. 101,489 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.
As of 7/18, 3,413.628M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 678K doses in the past 24 hrs.
On 7/18 Macau reported 10 new positive cases, all domestic. 8 of the domestic cases are traced close contacts under centralized quarantine & 2 via community screening. There were 0 new deaths.
On 7/18 Hong Kong added 3,256 new positive cases, 237 imported & 3019 domestic (1,217 via RT-PCR & 1,802 from rapid antigen tests), 4 deaths (90 – 99 y.o., 1 fully vaccinated).
On 7/18, Taiwan added 27,146 new positive cases, 367 imported & 26,779 domestic (including 75 moderate or serious). There were 37 new deaths (ages ranging from 20+ y.o. to 90+ y.o., actual dates of death range from 7/7 – 7/16, 33 w/ underlying conditions, 13 fully vaccinated & boosted).
