So this happened:
Van Gogh's starry night with the first image taken from the James Webb Telescope pic.twitter.com/ldmRiVjXQZ
— Jay Van Bavel (@jayvanbavel) July 15, 2022
Adam sent this to me a couple of nights ago; I suggested he post it here, but he bounced the ball to me, so, via Silverman, who seemingly does not want to sully his reputation for fierceness, let’s all take a midday moment of awesomeness before getting on with our scheduled apocalypses.
This thread is as open as it gets.

I want that as a print to hang on my wall.
Ken
Is there an NFT of that?
Spanky
They took a brilliant piece of work and fucked it up by adding Van Gogh.
Gin & Tonic
You people like fireworks?
Alison Rose
@Gin & Tonic: Dang. You love to see it.
This reply made me snicker.

That is a gorgeous picture

True story: I’m at MOMA a few years ago checking out the Serra exhibit there. It’s getting towards closing time and I walk past a gallery and see a crowd out of the corner of my eye, look over, and think, “Oh, hey, that’s The Starry Night.” But there’s too many people gathered around it, so I decide I’ll come back in a few minutes.
I walk around the corner into the next gallery, and I’m stunned by a huge Jackson Pollock filling up my field of vision. Based on images I’d never much thought of Pollock one way or another, but seeing this one in the flesh I’m utterly transfixed.
The Starry Night: “Huh.” Pollock: “WHOAH!”
I never did make it back to The Starry Night.
Elizabelle
Spectacular.
MattF
Impressive that Starry Night and the first Webb image work together so well. Try drawing your own version of Starry Night from memory. It’s hard to get that feeling right.
oatler
Beautiful but it gave me a sympathetic earache.
Leto
@Ken: Yes. It’s the “PrtScn” button on your keyboard, or if you’re on a mobile device press your finger to the image and then press “Copy”. Instant NFT.
Benw
Awesome!
Im waiting while my daughter is getting her first color and cut today, and I did not understand the scope of this operation!

@Gin & Tonic: In the latest edition of Russia’s “I wouldn’t have hit the b#%ch if she hadn’t made me” Lavrov is declaring they are just gonna have to take more Ukraine because the US and the rest of the west are giving naughty Ukraine long-range weapons (such as those taking out Russian ammo depots), which threatens Russians who are in the parts of Ukraine that Russia already stole. I think I have that right.
Jay
@trollhattan:
moron speak.
if Russia could take and hold more areas of Ukraine, that simply moves the number of Russians in range of HIMARs, forward.
Larov is just simply re-stating with a new “justification”, Russia’s original goals.
And is providing more reason’s for Ukraine and the International Community to ignore attempts at a “negotiated” settlement.
Has Larov made contact with Stiener?
Gin & Tonic
@trollhattan: If I didn’t know better I’d say Simonyan was a direct descendant of Joseph Goebbels.
Alison Rose
@trollhattan: Lavrov needs to be sent to the moon.

Not too respitey, but I’m dashing out:

Galaxy, galaxy night.

@HumboldtBlue: holy shit. the first words out of his mouth: “is the baby okay? please tell me the baby’s okay.”

@Ken: Me.
Even though I still don’t know what to do with it.

Glad to see Biden speaking on the climate, but should he be standing out in the sun wearing a suit when it’s over ninety degrees there right now?
Sure Lurkalot
@Benw:
I’m not sure why, but this gave me the giggles. Everyone could use a giggle now and then, so thanks.
Hope she likes her new do!

This made me happy and thus is a kind of respite. Jamie Raskin schooling the Rs on the Second Amendment.

Reposted from downstairs. This news seems more respite adjacent.

Wow. That image is insanely gorgeous.

@narya:
Yup

@Leto:
the NFT is the token on the blockchain that says “I (my blockchain handle) have a copy of this jpeg.”

@HumboldtBlue: The pizza delivery guy should get any training he needs to join the fire department, or any emergency management agency he chooses, if he would like to go that route. Career path, and benefits.
He has demonstrated his courage and fitness, with heading into a burning building, without protective equipment, for the benefit of others.
Good to see body cams picking up some good behavior.

@Elizabelle:
Agreed on all points.

@Sure Lurkalot: almost 3 hours in and still going! I bought her a slice to eat while she waited for the dye to set which the salon ladies thought was hilarious!

Fun fact: VanGogh painted Starry Night by candlelight—using candles attached to his hat.

@zhena gogolia:
Maybe not? Maybe Schmemann’s mind has been thoroughly pickled?

The GoFundMe account for the pizza delivery driver, who was injured in his rescues, is now nearly $500,000. The original request was for $100,000 to cover his medical bills.

I tried to link to a pic of Lego’s Starry night but can’t seem to get it right.

This thread is full of the most wonderful stuff any Balloon Juice thread ever had. Starry Night, Webb deep space, Pizza Delivery guy saving kids, all just great.
Thanks!

@different-church-lady: Ha! My true story is that I went around a corner at MOMA (where I go about once every 50 years) and came face to face with “The Starry Night.” I had a very similar reaction!
