Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Come on, man.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

He really is that stupid.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Bark louder, little dog.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Books are my comfort food!

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Second rate reporter says what?

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Adam sent this to me a couple of nights ago; I suggested he post it here, but he bounced the ball to me, so, via Silverman, who seemingly does not want to sully his reputation for fierceness, let’s all take a midday moment of awesomeness before getting on with our scheduled apocalypses.

This thread is as open as it gets.

True story: I’m at MOMA a few years ago checking out the Serra exhibit there. It’s getting towards closing time and I walk past a gallery and see a crowd out of the corner of my eye, look over, and think, “Oh, hey, that’s The Starry Night.” But there’s too many people gathered around it, so I decide I’ll come back in a few minutes.

I walk around the corner into the next gallery, and I’m stunned by a huge Jackson Pollock filling up my field of vision. Based on images I’d never much thought of Pollock one way or another, but seeing this one in the flesh I’m utterly transfixed.

The Starry Night: “Huh.” Pollock: “WHOAH!”

I never did make it back to The Starry Night.

Impressive that Starry Night and the first Webb image work together so well. Try drawing your own version of Starry Night from memory. It’s hard to get that feeling right.

@Gin & Tonic: In the latest edition of Russia’s “I wouldn’t have hit the b#%ch if she hadn’t made me” Lavrov is declaring they are just gonna have to take more Ukraine because the US and the rest of the west are giving naughty Ukraine long-range weapons (such as those taking out Russian ammo depots), which threatens Russians who are in the parts of Ukraine that Russia already stole. I think I have that right.

Russia’s military focus in Ukraine is no longer “only” the east of the country, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said.

In an interview with Russian state media, he implied Moscow’s strategy had changed after the West supplied Ukraine with longer-range weapons. Russia would now have to push Ukrainian forces further from the front line to ensure its own security, he explained.

The US had earlier accused Russia of preparing to annex parts of Ukraine. Russia invaded Ukraine in February, claiming falsely that Russian-speakers in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region had suffered a genocide and needed to be liberated.

Five months on, Russia has occupied parts of the east and south of the country, but it failed in its original aim of capturing Kyiv and has since claimed its main objective was the liberation of Donbas.
Since February, the West has supplied Ukraine with increasingly powerful weapons to use in its defence against Russian forces. Mr Lavrov says that has forced Russia to expand its objectives further.

“We cannot allow the part of Ukraine controlled by [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky… to possess weapons that would pose a direct threat to our territory,” Mr Lavrov said in the interview with Margarita Simonyan – a well-known commentator on Russian TV and editor-in-chief of broadcaster RT.

“The geography is different now,” he said, naming the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions as Russia’s latest objectives. Moscow’s forces already occupy parts of both regions.

    @trollhattan:

    moron speak.

if Russia could take and hold more areas of Ukraine, that simply moves the number of Russians in range of HIMARs, forward.

Larov is just simply re-stating with a new “justification”, Russia’s original goals.

And is providing more reason’s for Ukraine and the International Community to ignore attempts at a “negotiated” settlement.

Has Larov made contact with Stiener?

25 yo pizza delivery man runs into burning house, saves four children who tell him another might be in the house. He goes back in, finds the girl, jumps out a window with her & carries her to a cop who captures the moment on bodycam.

Reposted from downstairs. This news seems more respite adjacent.

Some hopeful news about the upcoming senate vote on the Respect for Marriage Act.  link to cnn.com

CNN)Republican and Democratic senators said Wednesday they expect a bill to codify same-sex marriage to eventually win the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster, a sign of growing public acceptance and a sea change over an issue that had once badly divided the two parties.
While most GOP senators are likely to vote against the bill, lawmakers in both parties believe there will be at least 10 Republicans who would join all 50 Democrats and advance the bill to a final up-or-down vote.
Buoyed by the 47 Republicans who voted for similar legislationthat passed the House Tuesday, senators expected a similar show of bipartisan support when the measure hits the Senate floor.
One key Republican, Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, told CNN Wednesday he “probably will” support the bill. And, importantly, Republican Whip John Thune said he expects the legislation will have similarly strong GOP support in the Senate as it got in the House.
