Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Sunday Evening Open Thread: Let’s Pray for A Slow News Week…

This post is in: Music, Something Good Open Thread

Hidden-gem thread I turfed up during my backstage Draft Purge:

Everyone on my team (5 men ages 48-75) texts me to make sure the slang they’re using is correct in context. Some examples below:

— The Meanest TA, PhD. (@MeanestTA) April 1, 2022

WorkDad (58): “What does yeet mean?”

Me: pic.twitter.com/X3zCeeqc5y

— The Meanest TA, PhD. (@MeanestTA) April 1, 2022

… In return they translate my frustrations into professional corporate.

Me: “How do I say this meeting is a waste of my time I am not paid enough to deal with your bullshit?”

Boss: “Can you provide me with a meeting agenda so I can ensure my presence adds value? I want to prioritize my schedule to support our most urgent needs.”

Me: “How do I say there is no way you are this fucking stupid?”

WorkDad: “I think there was a disconnect, can you restate your definition of this concept so we can ensure there’s no miscommunication?”

Me: “How do I say I am not your secretary?”

Elder Curmudgeon: “I’m going to redirect you to (name) for assistance on this particular task.”…

Me: “How do I say fight me?”

Project Manager: (deep sigh) “I think we should discuss this offline.”…

Me: “How do I say you fucked around now you’re finding out?”

Boss: “I think you’ll find that this outcome is in line with the predictions we made during the (date) meeting.”…

Read the rest here.

Watcha y’all doing to gear up for another week?

Between this thread and the Blogfather’s intestinal chronicle, I have apparently stumbled in during comedy hour…

My week? Not much. Finals are ongoing. So, the weekly schedule includes study, ulcers, hairloss, worrying about gpa, insomnia… The usual.

With the season’s breakaway hit, J6!, on hiatus, and entering the traditional slow season* of August, your prayer may be answered.

    * The tradition used to be “silly season”, back before silly became the news business model.

Just binge-watched my way through “How to Build a Sex Room.” Definitely recommend.  It’s really leans more towards your typical home remodel than smut (not that there’s anything wrong with smut) and Melanie Rose is a hella good interior decorator. You can see how she incorporates her clients’ desires into the rooms.

Also really pleased with the diversity of the clients, across race, age, class, sexual orientation and gender identity — and most importantly how tame to wild they are. Some are pretty straight-laced, and while Rose gently nudges them to broaden their horizons, she delivers rooms that are more sensual than sexual.

The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill My Prius

When we last left off of this sad story, my Prius’ catalytic converter was stollen while it was parked in the street just down from my house.  The insurance company had us take it to a place in Burbank that was able to quickly get a converter and install it in a few days and after paying the deductible, I drove it home.  That was Thursday before last.  I made a Costco run, I had run out of eggs; and moved my car so that it wouldn’t get ticketed due to street sweeping.

So, last Wednesday, I go out to start the car for a trip to the store.  The dash comes up with an error, “Check Hybrid System”.  I do some research on-line and try to reset the error, no joy.  But good news, I’m on the right side of the street for street sweeping for Thursday!  I try a few different things Thursday morning to move it to the other side of the street, for street sweeping the next morning.  No joy again.  After getting a parking ticket Friday morning, Madame took me to get a new  12v battery, which I installed today, still no joy.

    The story continues…

in a way, I hope that it isn’t a slow news week… because slow news weeks means that we get more filler crap about How Biden is failing because the price of eggs went up 17%, or the fact that he fell off a bike once or how he’s at fault for not getting Sen Manchin to do what’s right and what he promised.  Or we conversely hear about how having to gravel across state lines to get an abortion isn’t as much of an problem as the uncivility faced by Supremes while eating ice cream while removing rights from over 50% of the nation.

Because to be frank, I would much rather there be a continuous stream of news stories about breaking news on J6 hearings and Republicans going to jail and to have them continue to document the GOP going off the rails in their cruelty agenda.  While that may continue to peg my outrage meter, it stiffens my resolve to donate money and time to Dem Candidates to shut all this shit down.

Today I will be mostly trying to stay awake as I face my last full week and first full week at work (I’ve been staring late and finishing early Mon, Tue, Wed for the school run, but it’s school holidays for the next six weeks) before a much needed holiday up in Scotland. Can’t gone quickly enough.

But before that, I’ve got to work on my 3-minute speech in support of deselecting my local MP as Labour’s candidate for the next election, against the wishes of the NuNew Labour faction currently running the show who want the Party purged of anyone to the Left of your average Daily Mail reader.

I’m just going to quote the Forde Report at them. ‘Toxic mono-culture’ and ‘delegitimisation of other, entirely legitimate strands of Labour ideology’ should piss of all the ‘right’ people.

That tweet thread is a thing of beauty. I am not very good at corporate speak, so I am mentally setting aside a couple of those platitudes for future use.

Speaking of gearing up for the next week, I’ll just vent briefly. My parents were supposed to come visit for the month of August – they’d watch my son while my husband and I were at work, Mr. AA and I would take off a few days here and there, and we’d have a jolly time. However, my dad is unwell (long story) so they may cancel their trip. In addition to the obvious worry about my father, this also would leave us in a last-minute child care bind. My son is autistic so we can’t just sign him up spontaneously for day camp or other activities. I have some vacation days set aside that I’d prefer not to use, but can if necessary. So none of this is dire. Just another small addition to the mental load.

Ok, so SDCC keeps sane – even fannish – ppl away from Downtown. Otoh I’d had to be scary careful yesterday so I could drive out to far East County, to watch my Junior Olympic g’daughter, brag brag, and  her team’s performance in synch swimming. I so loved all those kids, all of them. It was worth every second. It’s SD, and even in the county it was inclusive, because it’s normal.

I was worried about our place on the pier because a few years ago some asshole told ppl at ComiCon about it, and it was mobbed. Luckily, that was then. It was pretty busy today, but mostly ppl who know and love the place. And there were so many  old friends – no really. Including the RW guy who kept V fed back in the early days of Covid. That guy likes Mr S because Mr S can keep up with him (ha) on economics. He ‘spained that he’s bee driving go LA lately and Mr S was train or drive. I just stepped in and “You want to have a car there, right?” Yes, I drive around on electricity as much as I can, but don’t bother the guy because he’s not taking the train.

Uno mas: we’re infested with Teslas here. Where are all of the special charging places the asshole promised? because the Teslas take up  spaces us peons who need charging our cars need.

Gas prices in Hawaii over the last week came down, barely noticeably. Except for on contrarian Maui.

The average regular unleaded gas price for Hawaiʻi is $5.59, which is one cent less than last week.

The average national price is $4.44, which is down 17 cents from a week ago, the Gas Watch said Thursday, July 21.

On Maui, in Kahului, the average price of $5.78 rose three cents higher than last week, eight cents higher than last month and $1.73 higher than a year ago, AAA Hawaiʻi said. Source

Still holding at $5.85 at the two stations nearest the domicile.

@Tony Jay: Go you! No really – get em!

I’m trying work how I can make the old white males on our board to pay the fuck attention to getting plug-ins for EVs. I mean, I am not the only hybrid car owner here.  No really. I’m absolutely sure that if we even have to share charging time, most of us would buy all electric cars. It also involves SDGE (subsidiary of PGE, who are responsible for many of California’s horrific wildfires in this century, but never mind.)

Heh, ever driven (even a hybrid) electric? Back in the day, I could smoke anything gas powered. Srsly. Now my sweet car is old so I don’t push it;  I will almost guarantee this: when people drive an EV, they will buy an EV.

I just listened to the BBC World News program HARDtalk, and wow! Certifiable loony Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B Anthony Pro-Life America was on to defend her singular crusade to rid the world of the scourge that is abortion. She’s fucking NUTS! CRAZY, even!

It’s brand new, so maybe that’s why the download link is greyed out, and BBC Player only works over there, but boy, that woman is deranged. Here’s the link, if you’re interested, but maybe it’ll show up later on Youtube.

@JWR: The Susan B Anthony group has worked for years to overturn the right to reproductive health care for women, not just against abortion but any type of hormonal birth control too. So not just the Pill, but implants, and IUDs; because they “believe” hormonal birth control all act as abortifacients. They try to disguise their extreme misogynistic agenda by using the name of a woman who would surely be horrified by them.

@satby: The 10 year old rape victim, the one forced a state over to end her pregnancy? Well the first thing sweet, lovable Ms. Dannenfelser Donnypants would do is catch and severely punish the girl’s abuser, the girl’s medical condition be damned!  She even claims she came to her current position, (she was once pro-choice), by way of both science(?!!) and philosophical discussions with anti-choicers. I was hoping the interviewer would call her on that, and suggest she was attempting to enforce her personal philosophy on all other women, but no luck.

    @🐾BillinGlendaleCA: Bummer.

Since it happened so soon after getting the cat replaced, there might be a chance that they did something while replacing it.  (Or maybe something else was damaged by the thieves.)

You’ve probably seen all the threads that popup in my quick Google searches, so I won’t repost them.

Here’s hoping it’s something simple and cheap!

My VW is still sitting on the street, waiting for parts for me to work on it ((probably this weekend) – ignition key won’t turn).  I’ve been driving J’s 2000 Corolla meanwhile, and rediscovering how much we really need to replace it too (AC is tired, broken plastic bits, I’ve never liked the way it drives or handles, etc.).  Been looking online at used Priuseses…

Good luck!  Please keep us informed on how it goes.

    Cheers,
    Scott.
