@Spanky: There *will* be monkeypox posts, some of them from me. But as it stands at the moment, while the ‘public health crisis’ announcement was important, I don’t think the general threat level is such that we need to schedule new aggregation updates!
We need to warn people — especially those most at risk — about what they need to do to protect themselves and others. We need to be sure vaccines and treatments are available, and that people who need them know how to access them.
We don’t need to encourage idiots and professional grifters to start circulating stories about ‘infected orgy participants’ coughing on ‘innocent’ strangers, or telling people they shouldn’t touch surfaces without disinfecting them first, or promoting ‘miracle products’ guaranteed to keep the virus away.

BIobot’s update through August 3 shows a 10% decline from the recent peak, consistent with about 450,000 new cases per day. Confirmed cases nationwide declined to 115,000. Hospital admissions declined to 44,400. Deaths increased to 490.
Regionally Biobot showed declines everywhere except the Midwest, where COVID was increasing (BA.4.6?). Confirmed cases are flat to declining in all 4 regions. There are no big waves or respites in any States. Among the largest, there are slight increases in PA, MI, OH, and NC. There are declines in CA, NJ, IL, NJ, NY, and TX.
It seems pretty clear that the BA.5 wavette has peaked. While Ba.2.75 and Ba.4.6 may be gradually increasing their share of cases, they do not seem to have sparked an actual wave anywhere except possibly India. I continue to think that cases will gradually ebb in the US, as they did in South Africa, for the immediate future.
P.S.: Switching to Tues and Thurs only is a good idea anyway, since there is almost no reporting over the weekends anymore, and the CDC updates it’s variant proportions information on Tuesday mornings.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 4,413 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, for a cumulative reported total of 4,697,213 cases. It also reported eight deaths for an adjusted cumulative total of 36,003 deaths – 0.77% of the cumulative reported total, 0.77% of resolved cases.
35,674 Covid-19 tests were conducted on 31st July, with a positivity rate of 8.4%.
There were 47,534 active cases yesterday, 1,011 more than the day before. 1,531 were in hospital. 52 confirmed cases were in ICU; of these patients, 32 confirmed cases were on ventilators. Meanwhile, 3,394 more patients recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,613,676 patients recovered – 98.2% of the cumulative reported total.
4,407 new cases reported yesterday were local infections. Six new cases were imported.
The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) administered 10,595 doses of vaccine on 4th August: 348 first doses, 1,995 second doses, 1,325 first booster doses, and 6,927 second booster doses. The cumulative total is 72,098,645 doses administered: 28,075,635 first doses, 27,457,691 second doses, 16,191,276 first booster doses, and 374,043 second booster doses. 86.0% of the population have received their first dose, 84.1% their second dose, 49.6% their first booster dose, and 1.1% their second booster dose.

Guangdong Province reported 1 new domestic confirmed (at Leizhou in Zhanjiang) case, a person coming from Hainan on 7/28. 9 domestic confirmed cases & 12 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 49 active domestic confirmed & 56 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not break down recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot traced the active domestic cases in each jurisdictions due to multiple clusters at the same time. 2 sites at Shenzhen & 3 at Zhanjiang are currently at High Risk. 4 site at Shenzhen & 2 at Zhanjiang are currently at Medium Risk.

There currently are 167 active domestic confirmed & 40 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province.

Overall in Mainland China, 147 confirmed cases recovered (4370 imported), 582 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation (61 imported) & 34 were reclassified as confirmed cases (11 imported), & 18,129 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 1,623 active confirmed cases in the country (611 imported), 1 in serious/critical condition (imported), 5,604 active asymptomatic cases (632 imported), 0 suspect cases. 101,384 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.
As of 8/4, 3,425,218M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 380K doses in the past 24 hrs.
On 8/4 Hong Kong added 4,428 new positive cases, 205 imported & 4,223 domestic (1,422 via RT-PCR & 2,801 from rapid antigen tests), 4 new deaths (70 – 94 y.o.).
On 8/4, Taiwan added 21,869 new positive cases, 292 imported & 21,577 domestic (including 98 moderate or serious). There were 54 new deaths (ages ranging from 40+ y.o. to 90+ y.o., 50 w/ underlying conditions, 19 fully vaccinated & boosted).

@Baud: Anne has been heroic for the last several years. I have not missed a day reading her compilations and recently began hoping she would start posting a bit less. So, yay for AL for being both heroic and sensible when conditions allow. She totally deserves a Medal of Freedom.
As one of the masses who have been pretty darned careful for 2.5 years, I went to a professional tennis tournament in DC for 2 days, surrounded by thousands, and am now trying to sort of isolate at home in our small house. Have a gig in a week, so fingers crossed.

While “Dynamic Zero COVID” is still achievable in China at a local level (as demonstrated dozens of times this year alone), it is no longer achievable at the national level. It is too easy for the virus to breach containment at borders to enter the country, as well as breach containment from an area w/ an outbreak to other regions, just look at how the outbreak at Sanya in Hainan started. That is especially true now that the Chinese government is slowly easing border entry restrictions (hundreds of thousands of foreign students attending Chinese universities remotely for the past 2 years are supposed to finally be able to enter this summer), as well as reducing inter-regional travel restrictions when there is a domestic outbreak, to ease the economic & societal burden.
There has been progress in vaccinating the > 80 y.o. cohort in recent months, but still not nearly fast enough. The increasingly frequent & unpredictable outbreaks are raising uncertainties for businesses & hitting consumer confidence. That is just adding to China’s current economic woes. However, I do think the deflation of the real estate bubble & the regulatory crackdown on oligopolies are more forceful headwinds, whose impact foreign commentators tend to all assign to “Zero COVID”. So, not sure for how long “Dynamic Zero COVID” can be sustained. The Chinese government is clearly hoping to extend it to late 2023, at the earliest. Aside from the the potentially massive death toll of partially or unvaccinated elders, I am sure the CCP regime is frightened of the implications of Long COVID from repeated infections across the population. Once you exit “Dynamic Zero COVID” there is no going back.
I am grateful for the normal life that the ‘Dynamic Zero COVID” policy has afforded since the late Spring 2020. That is the reason even an enormous Omicron outbreak in Shanghai did not sweep across the entire country. In the meantime, I feel it is only a matter of time my elderly parents in the US will catch COVID, despite keeping up to date of their vaccinations, & all of the care they take. & that gives me a sense of dread that is always in the background.
I am also glad that we vacation in Sanya in Hainan in early Jul. We would have been stuck there if we went in early Aug. Although quarantining in a resort isn’t all bad. I hear the quarantine meals prepared by the resorts are delicious!

It really feels to me like what “endemic COVID” would look like–the situation is almost static and people are mostly inured to it, sticking to whatever measures they’ve decided to take for the long haul or none at all. People get COVID, if they’re vaccinated they have a good chance of getting better in a few days, what are you gonna do. Death rates are relatively low, though not negligible–for Essex County, MA it’s about one death a day and has been for months.

Heard a BBC interview today with an American university researcher (forget which school). Her team has been doing aerosol testing since OG covid and are finding the fine aerosols of the latest omicron variants in their exhalation tests (half hour collection time per subject) are THREE orders of magnitude more concentrated than they were with alpha. And, being vaccinated has minimal impact in how readily an infected person can transmit it, explaining why infection rates are again relatively high.

Pretty much the same in my corner of upstate NY — and from what I’ve been able to glean from the spotty reporting these days, virtually all those deaths are among the elderly/infirm (80+, convalescent home patients, etc.). Hospitalized cases continue to be low, although, as I’ve said before here, the stats don’t break out people admitted *for* Covid illness, vs. people admitted for something else who happen then to test positive for Covid, too.

Yes that is my take as well, although at probably “really” 450,000 cases and 400 deaths a day, it is hardly background noise.
I read a tweet the other day from Eric Topol, charting something like 20 different BA.2,5,and 6 subvariants circulating in various parts of the globe, but not really breaking out in major new waves anywhere. From here on I suspect we get waxing and waning, but probably no new mega-waves like BA.1 last winter, and gradually – those most vulnerable having already been killed off – the populations’ collective immune systems turn this into something like the other 5 coronaviruses already endemic to humanity.

Well, my next door neighbor, who is about ten year younger than us and retired last year, informed my during a text exchange that he tested positive for COVID, and was at CVS getting Rx for pavloxid(?).
I was face to face with him the day before handing him a bag of tomatoes from my backyard garden. Exposure time was only a few seconds.
Fingers crossed.
Wife and I, and middle aged son who lives with us, have avoided it so far. Vaxxed and twice boosted.

If this is the new endemic, we still have a lot of adjusting to do. At 400 deaths/day, we’re looking at almost 150,000 deaths per year, about twice what we’d see in a bad flu year. Add in 10 – 20% of people post-covid developing long covid, and it’s a lot worse than the common cold variety of coronavirus. Long covid, in particular, is a new burden that will have economic and political ramifications if an effective treatment can’t be developed.

re Naomi Wu’s tweets – I think she’s right. There has always been a way forward that didn’t involve welding apartment doors closed. Infection control is still the path forward at present. We’ve know this for hundreds of years. It’s a false choice between “lockdowns” and “the pandemic is over” and always has been.
Ultimately, I think something to help guide the way out is nasal vaccines.

Yes, not everyone would use a nasal vaccine. But I can envision a time when doing a semi-annual/seasonal/monthly/daily nasal spray as routinely as taking a vitamin pill. And enough people doing so will knock the virus back and make “breakthrough” infection of the vaccinated/boosted much, much less likely.

Even in China, welding apartment doors have been extremely rare. I can only recall 2 such instances in the country over the entire pandemic, always some overzealous community worker acting well outside of policy guidance, & quickly corrected when exposure inevitably causes an uproar (like, what happens if there is a fire in the apartment & its only door is locked from the outside).
The cornerstone for China’s response to Omicron BA.2 or BA.5 is actually regular mass RT-PCR screening (normally once every 5 days, much more frequent if there is an outbreak). Participation is probably only 75% – 80%, but that is enough because the rate for the most mobile people (working population & students) is well over 90%, & daily screening for people in high risk occupations. The idea is to catch Omicron outbreaks at its earliest stages, when they are easier to contain/suppress/eliminate at lower economic & societal cost.

Henan Province reported 25 new domestic asymptomatic cases. 1 domestic confirmed & 8 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 15 active domestic confirmed & 440 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province.
Jilin Province reported 2 new domestic asymptomatic (1 each at Jilin City & Meihekou) cases. The case at Jilin City is a cold chain logistic worker, found via community screening. The case at Meihekou is a traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. 2 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 27 active domestic asymptomatic (22 at Yushu in Changchun, 4 at Jilin City., & 1 at Meihekou) cases in the province. 6 sites at Jilin City are currently at High Risk, & 11 at Medium Risk.
Beijing Municipality reported 2 new domestic confirmed (both at Shijingshan District) cases, both traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. 1 domestic confirmed case recovered. The municipality is not publishing the count of active domestic positive cases there. 3 sites are currently at High Risk, & 4 at Medium Risk.
At Tianjin Municipality 5 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 2 active domestic confirmed cases in the city. 4 sites are currently at Medium Risk.
At Shanghai Municipality 3 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 10 active domestic confirmed (none serious) in the city. The city is no longer publishing the number of active asymptomatic cases. All areas of the city are now at Low Risk.
At Anhui Province 2 confirmed & 5 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 4 active domestic confirmed (all at Bengbu) & 16 active domestic asymptomatic (4 at Bengbu, 10 at Suzhou & 2 at Haozhou) cases in the province. 1 site at Haozhou is currently at High Risk, & 1 at Medium Risk.
Jiangsu Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. There currently are 1 active domestic confirmed & 3 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not separate recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases at the different jurisdictions, due to the simultaneous outbreaks in different locations. 1 site at Nanjing is currently is at High Risk, .
Zhejiang Province reported 4 new domestic confirmed (all previously asymptomatic, 3 at Jinhua & 1 Quzhou) & 82 new domestic asymptomatic (81 at Jinhua & 1 at Quzhou) cases, all traced close contacts under home/centralized quarantine. As the province does not break down recoveries by imported & domestic cases, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases there. 6 sites at Jinhua & 1 at Lishui are currently at High Risk. 10 sites at Jinhua & 1 at Lishui are currently at Medium Risk.
At Fujian Province there currently are 11 active domestic confirmed & 2 active domestic asymptomatic cases remaining. As the province does not separate recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases at the different jurisdictions, due to the simultaneous outbreaks in different locations.
At Jiangxi Province there currently are 5 active domestic asymptomatic (4 at Nanchang & 1 at Yichun) cases in the province. 2 sites at Nanchang are currently at Medium Risk.
Sichuan Province reported 1 new domestic asymptomatic (at Suining) cases, a person coming from out of province & testing positive upon arrival. 4 domestic confirmed & 7 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. As the province does not break down recoveries by imported & domestic cases, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases there. 11 sites at Chengdu are currently at Medium Risk.
Chongqing Municipality reported 1 new domestic confirmed (at Jiulongpo Districts) & 3 new domestic asymptomatic (1 at Jiulongpo District & 2 at Nan’an District) cases, all traced close contacts under centralized quarantine. 7 domestic confirmed & 1 domestic case recovered. There currently are 18 active domestic confirmed & 15 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city. 2 sites are currently at High Risk, & 9 are currently at Medium Risk.
Zunyi in Guizhou Province did not report any new domestic positive cases. There currently are 1 active domestic confirmed & 2 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city. 1 site at Zunyi is currently at High Risk, 1 site at Medium Risk.
At Yunnan Province 2 domestic asymptomatic case recovered. There currently are 30 active domestic asymptomatic cases there.
Imported Cases
On 8/7, Mainland China reported 56 new imported confirmed cases (6 previously asymptomatic), 77 imported asymptomatic cases, 0 imported suspect cases:
Overall in Mainland China, 119 confirmed cases recovered (45 imported), 486 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation (62 imported) & 48 were reclassified as confirmed cases (6 imported), & 9,056 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 2,270 active confirmed cases in the country (608 imported), 2 in serious/critical condition (both imported), 5,067 active asymptomatic cases (654 imported), 0 suspect cases. 98,037 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.
As of 8/7, 3,426.023M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 180K doses in the past 24 hrs.
On 8/7 Hong Kong added 4,040 new positive cases, 233 imported & 3,807 domestic (1,428 via RT-PCR & 2,379 from rapid antigen tests), 7 new deaths (66 – 88 y.o., 4 un-boosted).
On 8/7, Taiwan added 15,412 new positive cases, 206 imported & 15,206 domestic (including 45 moderate or serious). There were 26 new deaths (ages ranging from 50+ y.o. to 90+ y.o., actual dates of death range from 6/17 – 8/6, 23 w/ underlying conditions, 9 fully vaccinated & boosted).
