Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

When I was faster i was always behind.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Meetup with NotMax in NYC

by WaterGirl|  August 16, 202210:00 pm| 86 Comments

This post is in: Balloon Juice, Meetups, Open Threads

FacebookTweetEmail

NotMax is scheduled to board first leg of his flight to NY one week from today.

As requested by NotMax, I am “slapping up a post to seek further interest as the dates approach, wherein we can lock down specifics.”

NotMax is planning to be in NYC area August 24th through September 8th. Most popular days for B-J meet-ups in the past have been on weekends, so that would mean a choice of:

Friday, August 26
Saturday, August 27
Sunday, August 28
Friday, September 2
Saturday, September 3
Sunday, September 4
Monday, September 5 (Labor Day)
.
Preference as to a date? Also too, afternoon or evening? Any strike-throughs are dates someone who is interested but has already mentioned that the date didn’t work for them.

If/when arrangements are made, might people be up for some a la carte picnicking? Interesting (free!) events on each of the suggested Friday evenings at Bryant Park: #1 — #2. Variety of food booths at the site.

NotMax could use some help figuring out what day will work best.  I’ll link to this post in the sidebar so you won’t have to catch NotMax in real time.

Best of luck organizing the NY meetup! I’ve enjoyed the Denver meetings we’ve put together. Maybe it’s time for another one of those, it has been a while, and COVID is kinda-sorta winding down.

Hope y’all have a good meetup.

I just motored in this afternoon from a five-day meetup in Rehoboth Beach with Bro’ Man, his family and our RWNJ brother, who drove in from Las Vegas in his gigantic Ford pickup (F-450?) with gigantic camper back. The visit went surprisingly well. We mostly managed to avoid touchy subjects, and we had some great meals and hangout sessions. Maybe more detail later.

Don Lemon just referred to her as “vocal Trump critic” as if there is nothing else – certainly nothing factual – about her.

CNN guy says she did best in the counties that President Biden won. They are the top two counties in the state for percentage of college graduates.

    @James E Powell:

Democrats win the less Christian vote as well, Republicans win the Christian vote.  If we can call out Republicanism, if we can call out Trumpism, if we can call out Whiteness, if we can call out masculinity, but we do not smash and destroy Christianity we are wasting our time.  Until the cross is worse than a swastika and confederate flag we have no hope, no platform, and fight a lost fight.

Claming there are good Christians is vastly more insane than claiming there are good Republicans, always has been.   Until people who are out right hostile on all levels to Christianity and view it as the toxin it is become the majority this country is lost.  Thankfully, the younger generations do.  And view The Bible as it should be viewed, a massively more toxic and evil book than Mein Kampf.

If he’s not a right winger on social issues he aint a Christian.  The far right is correct on that.  Also even black and latino youth are leaving the church.  It is the single most vile instutitution in America today.   If you don’t grasp that theocracy or banning Christianity are the only two options we face you are past the gate and a fool

Keep saying there are good Nazis, then wonder why people don’t vote.  There are no good Nazis, and Christianity is much worse.

Most evil and vile institution if you care about rights especially for women and sexual minorities.  Rod Dreher is completely correct on what it demands.   So either you are utterly and totally against it or you cannot be a good citizen, you cannot be a good human being.   Destroy it.  Utterly, competely.  Shame all that wore a cross or owned a Bible.  The younger generations get it.  It’s going away.  That’s the actual fight we face, Christianity or humanity.  I have full “faith” that a bible will be Camp of Saints within my life, and that will be the point where we can make progress.

About NYC meetup: spouse and I can make any date, though later dates are somewhat less good, so 26-28 are fine . Picnic sounds good. And as to general location,  Manhattan because it’s central within the city. We live in the NW Bronx near the 1 train and MetroNorth.

    Edited to correct dates

Consensus seems to be coalescing around Friday the 26th. Let’s make it so. Free concert begins at 7 p.m. I tentatively plan (weather and LIRR willing) to be at The Porch at Bryant Park (drinks and casual eats) around 5 p.m. Close to the fountain, The Porch is located in the southwest quadrant of the park, near the intersection of 40th Street and 6th Avenue. Short amble from the Times Square subways lines. Planning to be carrying a messenger bag with some kind of Balloon Juice placard affixed, suitable for display on the table.
