NotMax is scheduled to board first leg of his flight to NY one week from today.
As requested by NotMax, I am “slapping up a post to seek further interest as the dates approach, wherein we can lock down specifics.”
NotMax is planning to be in NYC area August 24th through September 8th. Most popular days for B-J meet-ups in the past have been on weekends, so that would mean a choice of:
Friday, August 26
Saturday, August 27
Sunday, August 28
Friday, September 2
Saturday, September 3
Sunday, September 4
Monday, September 5 (Labor Day)
.
Preference as to a date? Also too, afternoon or evening? Any strike-throughs are dates someone who is interested but has already mentioned that the date didn’t work for them.If/when arrangements are made, might people be up for some a la carte picnicking? Interesting (free!) events on each of the suggested Friday evenings at Bryant Park: #1 — #2. Variety of food booths at the site.
NotMax could use some help figuring out what day will work best. I’ll link to this post in the sidebar so you won’t have to catch NotMax in real time.

Best of luck organizing the NY meetup! I’ve enjoyed the Denver meetings we’ve put together. Maybe it’s time for another one of those, it has been a while, and COVID is kinda-sorta winding down.
RedDirtGirl
i like the idea of the Friday 8/26 Joe’s Pub free outdoor concert/picnic concept!
arrieve
I’m available, and love the idea of a picnic. But whatever people are up for is fine with me.
eversor
Liz Cheney lost, wait for the break down on vote by religion. Thanks Christianity!
NotMax
Thanks for front paging this, WaterGirl.
Steeplejack
Hope y’all have a good meetup.
I just motored in this afternoon from a five-day meetup in Rehoboth Beach with Bro’ Man, his family and our RWNJ brother, who drove in from Las Vegas in his gigantic Ford pickup (F-450?) with gigantic camper back. The visit went surprisingly well. We mostly managed to avoid touchy subjects, and we had some great meals and hangout sessions. Maybe more detail later.
eclare
Take lots of photos!
Another Scott
Have a great time!
Cheers,
Scott.

@eversor:
Don Lemon just referred to her as “vocal Trump critic” as if there is nothing else – certainly nothing factual – about her.
CNN guy says she did best in the counties that President Biden won. They are the top two counties in the state for percentage of college graduates.
JAFD
OK, Mr. JAFD is ready to catch the PATH eastward, to any reasonable destination on any of these dates.
Am zapping off Email to Mr. Cole and Ms. Watergirl, possible alternate Eddresses to be sure to reach me.
Hope to see you soon !
Captain C
@RedDirtGirl: Seconded.
Jackie
Welp, NBC says Liz lost. No surprise, but, I hope McCarthy enjoys herding squalling cats. Should the GQP win the House – which I think is a toss up – he’s gonna have his hands full.
Benw
I could possibly do Aug 26th and Sept 3rd but don’t plan around me. Definitely a picnic would rule!
Omnes Omnibus
@eversor: Oh FFS.
eversor
@James E Powell:
Democrats win the less Christian vote as well, Republicans win the Christian vote. If we can call out Republicanism, if we can call out Trumpism, if we can call out Whiteness, if we can call out masculinity, but we do not smash and destroy Christianity we are wasting our time. Until the cross is worse than a swastika and confederate flag we have no hope, no platform, and fight a lost fight.
Claming there are good Christians is vastly more insane than claiming there are good Republicans, always has been. Until people who are out right hostile on all levels to Christianity and view it as the toxin it is become the majority this country is lost. Thankfully, the younger generations do. And view The Bible as it should be viewed, a massively more toxic and evil book than Mein Kampf.
Omnes Omnibus
@eversor: Do us a favor and don’t canvas for Warnock in GA.
eversor
@Omnes Omnibus:
If he’s not a right winger on social issues he aint a Christian. The far right is correct on that. Also even black and latino youth are leaving the church. It is the single most vile instutitution in America today. If you don’t grasp that theocracy or banning Christianity are the only two options we face you are past the gate and a fool
Keep saying there are good Nazis, then wonder why people don’t vote. There are no good Nazis, and Christianity is much worse.
dmsilev
@eversor:
Oh, for the love of God.
(seemed more appropriate than my first reaction, which was ‘oh for fuck’s sake’)
Omnes Omnibus
I would think that the former pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta would disagree with your characterization of him. Not everyone shares your bigotry. And FWIW my dog tags said No Religious Preference.
eddie blake
where are the options? are the venues just limited to manhattan? (i live in the middle of brooklyn.)
eversor
@dmsilev:
Most evil and vile institution if you care about rights especially for women and sexual minorities. Rod Dreher is completely correct on what it demands. So either you are utterly and totally against it or you cannot be a good citizen, you cannot be a good human being. Destroy it. Utterly, competely. Shame all that wore a cross or owned a Bible. The younger generations get it. It’s going away. That’s the actual fight we face, Christianity or humanity. I have full “faith” that a bible will be Camp of Saints within my life, and that will be the point where we can make progress.
eversor
@Omnes Omnibus:
Being hostile to Christians is no better or worse than being hostile to Republicans or Trumpers. You need to get that, because it’s coming. It’s either a theocracy or Christianity going down harder than the Nazis did.
dmsilev
@eversor: I will simply note that Christianity is not a monolith and Rod Dreher does not speak for anything near the totality of people under that umbrella. Not even close.
(and no, I’m not Christian. I do, however, object to blind unreasoning slavering fanaticism. Like yours)
Omnes Omnibus
@eversor: You keep saying that but that doesn’t make it so. Fanaticism is a problem, and you, old boy, seem to have it.
SiubhanDuinne
@Omnes Omnibus:
FWIW, Senator Warnock remains as Senior Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and still takes Sunday services (though probably less frequently than he did before January 5, 2021).
ian
@eversor:
Your true troll colors are showing.
Omnes Omnibus
@SiubhanDuinne: Amendment cheerfully accepted.
eclare
@Omnes Omnibus: I guess he is not a fan of MLK Jr. either. Although to be fair, until his last comment, I did not realize that MLK Jr. was a Nazi!
Omnes Omnibus
It really changes everything, doesn’t it?
eclare
@Omnes Omnibus: Knowledge *is* power!
dmsilev
@eclare:
Now now, you’re being unfair. MLK Jr. wasn’t a Nazi. He was worse than a Nazi.
Omnes Omnibus
@dmsilev: So, like, a turbo-Nazi?
dmsilev
@Omnes Omnibus: A New Nazi. Which, to be fair, didn’t test well with the market and was soon replaced by Nazi Classic.
Jackie
@eclare: Congratulations! You are my first pie. I’m not religious, and your comments confirm my decision to remain non-religious.
Omnes Omnibus
@dmsilev: Is Diet Nazi available?
Elizabelle
@Omnes Omnibus: With an afterburner!
That MLK Jr. And his whole family. Fooled all of us ‘uns.
Omnes Omnibus
@Jackie: You pied eclare? In this thread? eclare?
dmsilev
And now the circle is complete:
Elizabelle
@Jackie: Unpie eclare. (Different type of pastry.)
It is eversor who is putting up all the [implied] MLK Jr. was a Nazi junk. And we have to destroy religion. Because no one who follows a religion is a good human. Yadda yadda yadda.
Eclare was merely drawn into the madness.
eclare
@Omnes Omnibus: She took me seriously? Whatevs.
Omnes Omnibus
@dmsilev: That whole exchange was brilliant.
dmsilev
@Omnes Omnibus: Yes, definitely. Just come to Southern California and try to order a cheeseburger.
Omnes Omnibus
@dmsilev: Well played.
Elizabelle
I need to find LIz Cheney’s concession speech. I hear it was fierce.
Splitting Image
@dmsilev:
He was a Communist, except when he was a Republican.
eclare
@Elizabelle: I am assuming bits will be on Morning Joe tomorrow. Also the backdrop is supposed to be spectacular, sundown in Jackson.
SiubhanDuinne
@Elizabelle:
Here you are, my friend.
dmsilev
@Elizabelle: Paraphrasing just slightly,
One guess as to who the Great White Whale is.
Elizabelle
@SiubhanDuinne: thank you.
@dmsilev: LOL. Be gone, Satan. Be gone.
Jackie
Elizabelle
@Jackie: eversor is a nutjob on the topic. eclare was jesting with him.
Omnes Omnibus
@Jackie: You said you were pieing eclare not eversor. A big difference.
Jackie
@Omnes Omnibus: Yes! You’re correct. Adjusted my pie. Thanks!
Ivan X
Best days for me/us are 26/27/28/5.
Madeleine
About NYC meetup: spouse and I can make any date, though later dates are somewhat less good, so 26-28 are fine . Picnic sounds good. And as to general location, Manhattan because it’s central within the city. We live in the NW Bronx near the 1 train and MetroNorth.
Edited to correct dates
NotMax
Consensus seems to be coalescing around Friday the 26th. Let’s make it so. Free concert begins at 7 p.m. I tentatively plan (weather and LIRR willing) to be at The Porch at Bryant Park (drinks and casual eats) around 5 p.m. Close to the fountain, The Porch is located in the southwest quadrant of the park, near the intersection of 40th Street and 6th Avenue. Short amble from the Times Square subways lines. Planning to be carrying a messenger bag with some kind of Balloon Juice placard affixed, suitable for display on the table.
eddie blake
@NotMax: will try to make it out.
NotMax
@eddie blake
Looking forward to it. Won’t be the same without you.
JAFD
QK, Friday next week, around the block from Patience and Fortitude (you can hear them growling gently, almost a loud purrr) at 5 PM. Plan to be seeing you there, good Lawd willin’ and the Passiac don’t rise. Stay well till then.
Madeleine
This sounds great! Spouse and I will be there! In addition to meeting some BJ people, the concert sounds appealing.
NotMax
Figure we can move to blankets or chairs on the lawn for the concert, so leaning to winging it at the bar/eatery and not booking reservations for a full group.
Ivan X
I’ll be there!
Major Major Major Major
5:00 is not gonna work but I’ll look for you all closer to the concert. I am 6’4″, white, and skinny, and am wearing a black tshirt with a large Japanese woodcut of a skeleton https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E452667-000/

See you there !

I just got a zoom scheduled for 4 pm. If it ends early enough, I will be there. Fingers crossed.
Madeleine
Spouse and I expect to be there by 5 or a bit before. I’ll be wearing a lavender shirt and carrying a tote with a big G on the front. We’ve looked up a couple possible indoor spots in case of rain.
JAFD
