Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Second rate reporter says what?

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

… gradually, and then suddenly.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Books are my comfort food!

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Giving up is unforgivable.

The willow is too close to the house.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Tuesday Evening Open Thread: Criminals Don’t *Get* More Common Than TFG

Grain of truth: law enforcement serving search warrants routinely just routinely grab stuff aggressively and without apparent logical connection to warrant. It is, however, not like a “common criminal.” Common criminals face consequences if they take things illegally. https://t.co/OyHqbz8sJL

— 18Hat793 (@Popehat) August 16, 2022

Repub tears, they are delicious!

This is not just story #57, it is Trump confessing to the crime

If this report is accurate, Trump is saying he took these doc for his personal gain. It's no defense to say "the govt was going to be unfair." These are the govt's docs, not his. He doesn't get to hide them& benefit https://t.co/kiLmpbZH7p

— Neal Katyal (@neal_katyal) August 16, 2022

Patrick Philbin, Trump’s deputy White House Counsel, who Trump appointed to make sure Trump records ended up properly at the National archives, tried to get Trump to turn over the records. Trump refused, saying the records are “mine,” “not theirs.”https://t.co/VxIkPwBSay pic.twitter.com/fTfHyiXOfV

The other Repubs are nervous, because TFG’s usual mob-boss tactics aren’t working on the DoJ or the FBI…

New via NY Times: Pat Cipollone and Patrick Philbin, the Trump White House counsel and his deputy, were interviewed by the FBI in connection with boxes of sensitive documents stored at Mar-a-Lago

— Hugo Lowell (@hugolowell) August 16, 2022

Alina Habba is spewing pure nonsense. Confidential witnesses are NEVER identified at the pre-indictment stage. Grand jury secrecy really does protect the "CW" or "CC". In 25 years of working as in criminal litigation (3 as an AUSA, 22 on the defense side), I know of only one leak https://t.co/vaR4TXH73a

— Mitchell Epner (@MitchellEpner) August 16, 2022

Criminal defendants have a right to challenge the basis for a search warrant if and when evidence obtained through that search is to be used against them at trial (a “Franks” hearing).

But there’s no default for providing access to the affidavit until and unless that happens.

All the idiots defending him have gone silent. They were sooooo sure this was a political winner for them.

Anyone with 2 brain cells knew this was something BIG. They don’t send in 30 agents, an armored truck, and a national security team for a weather map.

Now, a humiliated Laura Ingraham wants to break-up and start seeing other Nazis.

Laura Ingraham usually a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, said a conflict-weary nation might be ready to move on from the former president.

And she indicated it could be time to start looking for someone who has Trump’s politics, but not the baggage, should he decide to run again in 2024.

“The country, I think, is so exhausted,” she told podcaster Lisa Boothe, per The Hill. “They’re exhausted by the battle, the constant battle, that they may believe that, well, maybe it’s time to turn the page if we can get someone who has all Trump’s policies, who’s not Trump.”

Wife’s car was totaled in July. Was finally able to go shopping for a replacement today. The three headed monster of limited availability, increased prices, and skyrocketing interest rate put my new pacemaker to the test. Everything was all said and done, and my younger son, who is on the spectrum, and who came along just so he could drive my car home while I drove home the new one, promptly backed into a brand effing new, still in shrink wrap car. The whole sales and service staff came out to see. I told him I would take care of it and sent him home, and the dealer said if I pay a grand, they’ll forget about it. I thought there at least 1500 in damages that I was looking at, so I jumped on the deal, shook hands all around, and drove home myself.

Just keep saying to myself, it’s only $ and nobody got hurt. Actually thrilled that he did not melt down in public. Totally worth it.

Alina is licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut, and the United States District Court for the Districts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.

Alina has served as lead counsel for numerous newsworthy cases, ….and, most recently, Trump vs. Mary Trump, The New York Times Company, et al. filed in September 2021. In addition to her work in practice, she is a firm believer in continuing education as is evidenced by her post J.D. education at Harvard in Negotiations earning a top grade in the class and completing the Harvard Business School Executive program in Leading Professional Service Firms.

Funny to me that he apparently found her for his grudge match against his niece. Also she doesn’t mention her own education except to drop that Harvard credential in there. With the licensing she lists, can she represent him in Federal court? I think I heard somebody on MSNBC say if charges are filed, it will be by the US Atty in Miami? But I guess you don’t need to be licensed to go on TeeVee.

But it would end up with a lot of “lawyers” in jail, so there’s that.

He’s got no charisma, no charm, and actually gives off the air of the wannabe autocrat authoritarian. Trump came with the past of being a known public figure who knew how to play the conman. He knows a mark, and has the showman’s act coupled with populist hate to draw the folks who want that hate to be front and center, to rallies.

No, I think there’s more to it than that.  Yes, the hate is the foundation of Republican voting, but Trump could let his asshole flag fly in a way no other Republican can.  Ted Cruz is just as bigoted as Trump, but wouldn’t think to get up on stage and do a shaky mime mocking Parkinson’s Disease.  He’s not bragging about how many women he’s sexually assaulted, either.  Disgustis is delivering the hate, but he is a pale reflection of Trump’s angry, ranting, dumb-as-shit, asshole Your Racist Uncle impression that validates his voters so hard.

The political media isn’t a Trump supporter. Trump connected with these people in a way no other Republican could or will. Hell, they are going to fucking jail for him for participating in a seditionist act that he led, encouraged and watched on TV.

DeSantis may be a flaming asshole, and in today’s GOP that’s the only way to get ahead, but I just don’t see his ugly, non-charming, non-slick, non-charisma ass getting anyone to turn out to a Kansas farm field on a rainy November night.

    @Frankensteinbeck:

Cruz had the Christian vote until Falwell turned on him and pushed for Trump along with all the Trad Caths joining in.  Trace conservatism, republicanism, Trumpism, and you always end back at the same place, in the Church.  So again, unless we can tackle the Church all other political efforts are pointless.

Our problems have always come out of the pews.  We can have Christianity or we can have our rights, we cannot have both.
