One bit of good news:
… As SARS-CoV-2 raged in the summer of 2020, the Trump administration was busy sabotaging the once-premier public health agency. The administration’s meddling included stripping the CDC of its power to collect critical data on COVID-19 patients and pandemic resources in hospitals around the country.
According to multiple investigative reports at the time, then-White House Coronavirus Task Force Coordinator Deborah Birx was frustrated by the CDC’s slow and somewhat messy process of collecting and tidying the data submitted by thousands of hospitals. The data included stats on admissions, patient demographics, bed availability, ventilator use, discharges, and personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies.
In July 2020, the Trump administration abruptly directed hospitals to stop reporting all that data to the CDC and instead submit it to a new database run by the Pittsburgh-based software company TeleTracking Technologies. The little-known company had won a $10.2 million, six-month contract with the federal government, despite having no previous experience with setting up such a data-collection system. Before the award, the company had won only small contracts with the Department of Veterans Affairs for software that tracked the status of patients. The $10.2 million pandemic-era grant was over twenty times larger than all of the company’s previous government grants combined…
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for TeleTracking co-CEO Michael Zamagias told NPR that the company won the contract after the HHS reached out to it directly over the phone. NPR also noted that Zamagias was a long-time Republican donor who was previously in the real-estate business. Notably, he had personal ties to a Manhattan-based real estate financing company, Cooper-Horowitz, which worked extensively with the Trump Organization. Neal Cooper, whose father was a partner in the company, was closely mentored by Zamagias. Cooper told NPR that “we did tons of business with [Trump], billions of dollars of business.”
When officials for the Trump administration delivered the news to the CDC that TeleTracking was taking over, staffers immediately knew that the transfer would be a disaster, according to an investigative report by Science. One CDC staff member left the announcement meeting to sob. Others were outraged. “Birx has been on a monthslong rampage against our data,” one CDC employee texted to a colleague shortly after the meeting. “Good fucking luck getting the hospitals to clean up their data and update daily.”
The CDC staffers were right to be pessimistic. The transition to the new system was chaotic due to technical and administrative problems. Hospitals complained that they didn’t have enough time to prepare and that they faced frustrating technical problems requiring intensive resources at a time when they were overwhelmed with patients. The result was unreliable data amid a public health crisis…
Nevertheless, TeleTracking’s contract has been continually renewed since then, and the company has earned more than $50 million. Now, that’s coming to an end. The latest contract expires on December 31 and will not be renewed. Hospitals will once again submit their data to the CDC starting in mid-December, according to a leaked email seen by Bloomberg News…

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 4,071 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, for a cumulative reported total of 4,749,000 cases. It also reported seven deaths for an adjusted cumulative total of 36,124 deaths – 0.76% of the cumulative reported total, 0.77% of resolved cases.
4,465 Covid-19 tests were conducted on 16th August, with a positivity rate of 9.1%.
There were 42,476 active cases yesterday, 775 more than the day before. 1,542 were in hospital. 81 confirmed cases were in ICU; of these patients, 45 confirmed cases were on ventilators. Meanwhile, 3,289 more patients recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,670,400 patients recovered – 98.3% of the cumulative reported total.
4,069 new cases reported yesterday were local infections. Two new cases were imported.
The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) administered 7,333 doses of vaccine on 18th August: 380 first doses, 1,681 second doses, 1,164 first booster doses, and 4,108 second booster doses. The cumulative total is 72,205,876 doses administered: 28,085,702 first doses, 27,480,689 second doses, 16,206,396 first booster doses, and 433,089 second booster doses. 86.0% of the population have received their first dose, 84.1% their second dose, 49.6% their first booster dose, and 1.3% their second booster dose.

I will be interested to see how new buildings incorporate some of those ideas for better ventilation and air scrubbing. Pretty early on in the pandemic my employer installed UV lights in the HVAC system. I don’t know how good they are, but they did take a proactive measure to try to make things better.

I find that at least 50% of people are still masking up on the Toronto subway, and a decent number still mask up at downtown grocers.

Masking has always been about collective action. The higher the percentage of people who mask, the better protected everyone is. When few people are masking in an enclosed space, when COVID-19 prevalence is high, even an N95 will only go so far in affording protection.

I spent three weeks in Costa Rica as a study abroad class for my master’s program. I’ve been home for more than a week now, so I know I didn’t get Covid, but I am surprised that there was only one case (that we know of, anyway) among the thirty participants in the program. Many of them were twenty-somethings who spent the evenings in bars and restaurants and only wore masks on the bus rides for excursions out of the city if asked to.
I wore masks, and stayed in an AirBnB instead of a home stay with a Costa Rican family, and when I woke up a little sniffly one morning I tested, and isolated, and ordered food from Uber Eats. I feel as though that’s just standard operating procedure in these virus-ridden times, and yet, only the older people in the group (myself included) seemed to have any awareness of Covid at all.
None of this stopped me from having a good time, or really enjoying my first trip out of the country since the Before Times. And yet. Instead of feeling like, Oh yay, travel is possible again as long as you’re really careful, I feel more like I may be ready but the rest of the world isn’t. I had thought I’d take another trip–maybe Mexico City and Oaxaca, maybe Quebec City–over Christmas as a present to myself for finishing my master’s this December, but now I’m not so sure. I think maybe I’d rather stay home.

As I’ve been suggesting in the last couple of weeks, with no new variant threatening, the US is entering into a respite.
Biobot shows a 40% decline in COVID particles in wastewater from the recent peak as of August 17, consistent with roughly 300,000 new cases daily. The anomalous increase in the Midwest have reversed, and the South and West are down 50% from recent highs.
Reported cases have also declined back below 100,000 for the first time in many weeks, to 93,500. Hospitalizations have declined to 41,600. Deaths are still elevated at 472. A decline in deaths in the next 4-6 weeks back down to the 300 range seems a reasonable back of the envelope guesstimate.
Until we see a new variant take hold, or recently gained immunity wane, the respite should continue.

Before Covid I worked elections in many positions from greeter to constable to voter roll table jockey. I want to do it again as I once envisioned, forever.
The Covid numbers say don’t. The mask optional policy says don’t.
The possibilities of polling place disrupters don’t intimidate me. I know the state’s election rules and read them over every year.
But there is a much bigger problem too small to see. And hundreds of people an hour will be reminding me how vulnerable I am to their reckless choice to bring this disturbance to a polling place.
I can hardly wear a mask for ten minutes let alone 14 hours.

The cloth masks we were all wearing back in 2020, because there weren’t enough ‘good’ masks for all the doctors and nurses, offered negligible protection to the individual wearer, and were almost entirely about limiting the overall virus load in the air in shared indoor spaces.
I agree that the N95s aren’t invulnerable: if you’re in a place for long enough with a heavy enough virus load, some of it will sneak through or around your mask. But they do offer a significant degree of protection to the wearer that the cloth masks didn’t.

I may go back to my 3M industrial respirator if COVID things go south again. It isn’t ideal as it had exhaust vents, but it is a damn sight better for the wearer as it’s 100% proof against industrial dust, chemicals, aromas, virus and bacteria.
Last time I wore it before one-time surgical masks became common I was loading supplies into the back of the SUV parked next to an old Suburban which was running to keep occupants comfortable — well, kind of running on 6 or 7 cylinders and blowing a lot of blue smoke out around my feet. Yet I couldn’t smell a thing off. So I have good feelings about that respirator.
And if I avoid becoming a carrier, the fact that there are exhaust valves becomes immaterial. Very few folks are wearing masks at Kroger’s now.

I have a good supply of N 95 masks that I wear whenever I’m in public indoors, rapid transit or in crowds. Some places I go require everyone to mask up here in CA. They are “required” on transit, in public indoor spaces and have I’d say a 50-80% wear rate, some days even better. I also stay as far away from others as I can and notice that mask wearers all seem to do the same. Morons never seem to catch on, but then that might be how they earn the moniker.

I have lunch and usually some kind of activity once a week with a former work colleague and two of his former colleagues. We’re all old and have health issues, mine being minor compared to theirs, so we’ve been very careful to eat outside and always mask when inside. Yesterday, my friend, who had been very, very cautious, suddenly decided and loudly proclaimed the pandemic is over, so he wore his mask only when we were in a museum. We other three still mask anytime we’re inside. The other day in a fairly large grocery, I and one staff member were the only people wearing masks. It isn’t over. Although I won’t be surprised if we all get it eventually, I’m in no hurry to do so.

Sichuan Province reported 12 new domestic confirmed (1 previously asymptomatic, 8 at Chengdu, 2 at Ngawa Prefecture, 1 at Guang’an & 1 at unspecified locations) & 2 new domestic asymptomatic (both at Chengdu) cases. 1 of the cases at Chengdu was previously asymptomatic, 3 traced close contacts under centralized quarantine, 5 coming from out of province & under centralized quarantine, & 1 via screening of person deemed at risk of exposure.
