Let's get one thing straight: when Mitch McConnell was holding up the biggest investment in Ohio manufacturing in a generation, JD Vance was nowhere to be found.

Know why every MAGA goes to Ohio to fluff @JDVance1? Not cause they like him, it’s cause every focus group identifies one simple fact: people who see Vance think he sucks. A dud. See through. Poseur Yale lawyer. But if you want Thiel’s cash ya gotta genuflect to his sunk cost.

By contrast Vance's whole deal seems to be that being from rural Ohio is something he perceives to be considered shameful in the elite rungs of American society that he spent his life trying to break into. I would not like hearing that message were I a proud Ohio resident!
— Michael Tae Sweeney (@mtsw) August 16, 2022
JD Vance's sham non-profit brought a Purdue Pharma apologist to the parts of our state hit hardest by the opioid epidemic, to spout lies about the drugs poisoning our communities.
This is a slap in the face of every Ohio family touched by this crisis. https://t.co/E3RYcgAani

re: Bringing in Ron DeSantis to ‘help’ JD Vance, who besides me is shocked, shocked I say, to learn that Ron spoke 95% about himself in his appearance for the Hillbilly faker?
Asking someone that slimily ambitious, who we all know is aching to run for president, to come campaign for you and thinking you’ll get anything but a stump speech for themselves? Hahahahah. Poor Vance. Tsk tsk.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
You know what’s funny? Is that the US Republican Party and the CCP have a lot more in common than either would be willing to admit. It’s hilarious how much American right-wingers hate China, yet they both have very similar reactionary policies like trying to censor LGBTQ+ media, etc
Ken
@dmsilev: At the risk of sounding like a libertarian, I think this needs to be measured on two dimensions: How bad the candidate is, and how bad the campaign is.
I think Vance is a reasonably good campaigner, but he’s a terrible candidate (see numerous tweets above).
Oz might be a slightly better candidate, but is doing a terrible job selling himself.
geg6
@RaflW:
He did the same shit at his appearance here in Pittsburgh for Mastriano (notably, not with Oz).
And Betty should read the Matt Steib piece in NYMag about DeSantis and his new stance and weird arms. Not only is he morphing into a mini-Trump what with the weird head and fattening up, but now he’s standing like him and holding his arms weirdly.. I LOLed for real.
lowtechcyclist
It’s a small thing, I know, but I love the “If I can’t beat Ryan, no one can” bit.
Congrats, JD. You’re in a two-horse race with Tim Ryan. You’ve managed to figure out how these things work.
lowtechcyclist
@RaflW: Did DeSantis say that Ohio could become the Florida of the Midwest, or did he leave that out this time?
geg6
@Ken:
Hard disagree. He’s a terrible capaigner. He sat it out all summer, vacationing in one of his many US homes and taking a trip to Europe, I believe. And have you heard him speak? He’s awful.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@geg6:
Which one? Oz or Vance lol?
Cameron
@geg6: He’s been doing the Trump accordion-hands thing for a while.
Danielx
@Ken:
Do we have to choose? As far as I can tell they both suck as candidates and as campaigners.
Ken
@geg6: I’ll make the after-the-fact excuse that I meant Vance’s ability to raise funds and get endorsements — even if that does seem to be largely driven by the sunk-cost fallacy
@Danielx: Imagine zooming in on the lower-left corner of the chart. Zoom further, further, further… eventually you can see that the two dots for Vance and Oz, apparently both double-zeros, are slightly displaced from the origin.

So looking forward to demolishing Oz, Vance, Walker and the rest of the GQP.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Also setting things up so that neighbors spy on neighbors, as Texas did with it’s abortion law. And Florida with reporting on teachers about LGBT in schools. Very CCP.

@geg6: I live in Ryan’s district and for the 20 years he’s been our congressman he never stopped campaigning in the district, even in years when he had minimal opposition. He has never taken us for granted.
ETA It was a long skinny gerrymandered district. Ryan lives in the east end near Goku. I live on the western edge in Akron. Ryan has always been active around Akron although it is over an hour drive from his home. We know his heart is in Mahoning Valley, but he never ignored us in the Cuyahoga Valley.
geg6
@Ken:
The problem is that he can’t raise funds, which is why Mitch had to parachute in with giant bags of money. Vance sucks in every way.
Jeffro
Hey if DeSantis’ visit doesn’t bump up Vance’s poll numbers, maybe Glenn Youngkin can stop by and tell
the worldOhioans how much he loves the guy, just like he did a day or two ago with anti-abortion psycho Tudor “Having your rapist’s baby instead of aborting it will somehow help you heal from the rape, dontchaknow” Dixon up in Michigan.Vance doesn’t worry me so much (although I hope, and know, Ryan runs through the finish line). Smilin’ Glenn? I need him out of the mix for 2024 and going forward.

@sab:
I know the area well. Not far from here and my mom was born in Youngstown. My niece by another mother (my actual niece’s best friend) is a senior at YSU. He is a pretty authentic guy who fits his district well and that can be attractive all over OH. I’ve been throwing a little cash his way. It would be great if he won. Senators Brown, Ryan, Casey and Fetterman could do a lot for the region.

Vance started a charity to address opioid abuse and the only available doctor to lead the organization was Sally Satel? It’s like there’s a RWNJ Rolodex of approved grifters in every discipline and they just keep hiring the same people over and over again.
sab
I will give JD Vance credit for having a lovely wife. My initial reaction when the first ad with her ran was ” Uh oh. Yikes! ” But then all the other stuff blew up, like his fake opioid charity with the pro-pharma doctor, and his silence on the CHIPS Act. And not returning big donors phone calls.

@Barbara:I think there are approved rolodexes. All judges have to be cleared through Federalist Society and all policy people have to be cleared through American Emterprise Institute. And state level legislation is written by ALEC. It’s a really constricted talent pool they work with.

J.D. Vance is a shillbilly.

@NotMax: Shillbilly. That is perfect.

@geg6: Republicans came out of the winter believing that the midterms would see a big red wave. I think Vance and Oz bought into the overconfidence and figured that once they won their nominations they would have a cakewalk. Now they realize they have to really campaign and they don’t know how.
trump really screwed the Republicans with his endorsements. At least one astute Ohio jackal thought Mike Gibbons was Tim Ryan’s greatest threat, and Vance his weakest. And while John Fetterman is a formidable candidate, I thought David McCormick might have had an outside chance against him. Oz has none.
Sad!
Lapassionara

@Lapassionara: trump’s got the look. That’s one reason I do not think he’ll be a candidate for President as of January 1, 2024.

here’s a fresh find! a country-style ballad about the Florida FBI raid:

@Ken: Vance raised about $330,000 a month from individual donors in the last three month filing period. That’s awful for a top-tier Senate candidate vying for a flippable seat.
