Texas passed a law *requiring* schools to display any donated 'In God We Trust' poster: they are breaking the law if someone donates a poster and they don't display it.

So my youngest kid has a girlfriend and they’ve gotten quite serious over the past six weeks even though he leaves for Greece for the year on Sunday. She is pretty much just living with us. Our house is closer to her office. I’m tempted to tell her she is welcome to stay anytime after he leaves.
Is this just my empty nest dread or am I just losing it? It’s nice having her around.
New Deal democrat
Surprised you didn’t include the D win for Pat Ryan in a special election in a GOP-leaning upstate NY district.
Since the beginning of this year, I have been saying two things:
1. the Supreme Court really and truly was going to overrule Roe v. Wade.
2. the backlash to that ruling was going to be bigger than anything since the Vietnam War, and maybe even bigger than that.
People really, *really* don’t like having things taken away from them, especially bodily Constitutional rights, for the first time in 230 years.

I can’t help but think that the steady drip-drip-drip about TFG’s theft of all kinds of classified materials, on top of the J6 committee, is getting the attention of folks who wouldn’t necessarily be paying that much attention to politics. We have three kids, all now married and raising their own kids. We went through this with all three of them and also when one of them divorced their first spouse. They all brought their relationships home to us and invited us to be a part of them. It’s tough when that doesn’t work out.
My only advice to you, for what it’s worth, is take all of your cues from your son. I have had to remind myself over the years to remember that this is about our kids and their choices in life and our job as parents is to respect that and honor that. It’s hard to do that sometimes when you want to continue to mother them and their friends and significant others, but we really need them to let us know where they want us to fit in to their relationships.
So yeah, my advice is to talk with him about this before you invite her to be a part of your household when he’s in Greece. Let him guide you before you act one way or the other.
But this is your life so whatever you decide will be fine. Feel free to ignore my advice. 😉

I’m very happy that it looks like in our local Democratic primary Gustavo Rivera kept his seat over Miguelina Camilo in the remapped New York 33rd Senate District. Rivera’s the lead sponsor of the single-payer New York Health Act, so that’s excellent news here. Camilo, the “moderate,” whatever that means, had the strong backing of landlords and charter school groups as well as the local Democratic machine. A lot of money went into this to toss Rivera out.
I’m a little sad about Alessandra Biaggi’s loss, since she was the one who ejected the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) kingpin Jeff Klein in 2018. The IDC caucused with the New York State Senate Republicans and kept them running things, for Important Reasons.

So up here in NY-22 it looks like Francis Conole has prevailed in the Dem primary. This was the execrable Claudia Tenney’s district, but was redrawn to essentially comprise three CNY counties, with the center of gravity now in Syracuse, which is heavily Democratic. Conole’s a naval reserve captain and Iraq veteran, but his campaign was largely funded by a weird PAC backed by a cryptocurrency billionaire that claims to support candidates with a strong record of responding to Covid-19 and planning for future pandemics. But Canole has never held elected office and had no role in any state, county, or local response to Covid and doesn’t really even talk about it on his website. Upstate NY has attracted a lot of bitcoin mining operations recently, however, and some folks are wondering if that might not be what’s going on here. In any case, Canole’s opponent in the general is a batshit insane Trumper who isn’t going to even remotely try to act like a normal, moderate human being, so Canole has a pretty good shot at going to Washington next year.

One of them wrote me quite the message after my sister died, saying that she’s the good person she is today because of my sister’s love and help (their mother was really messed up with drugs). I found a pic of their first day in school in the pics from my sister than my mom had – 1st and 5th grade. Some follow-up on Najib Razak’s imprisonment. Rival groups are petitioning His Majesty the Agong to grant/to refuse Malaysian Official 1 a royal pardon. Najib is all of two days into a 12-year prison sentence; plus, he must pay a 210 million ringgit fine or do another five years in prison.
Najib still faces four more trials on other charges related to the 1MDB scandal — 42 of them in all. (1MDB has been called the biggest scandal of its kind in the world, and the SRC International case was only the smallest and most easily prosecuted part of it.) Were I His Majesty, I would wait and see how those other trials went before considering any pardon for that goddamn crook. I mean, if the Agong pardoned MO1 after one trial, and MO1 were then convicted at the other trials, the Agong would end up looking like a real chump.

@Low Key Swagger: In the “Batman” episodes “Hizzoner the Penguin / Dizzhonor the Penguin“, the Penguin pretends to go straight to run for Mayor of Gotham City. Batman runs in opposition, and manages to bore his own team with his earnest speeches about good government, while the Penguin throws wild parties.
Batman does win the election, though (in a surprisingly topical turn) the Penguin realizes that the law requires the votes to be certified by the election commission, and makes one last attempt to seize power by kidnapping the members.

From what I read, Crist hit pretty hard in his victory speech last night. He called DeSantis “a wannabe dictator” and said: “All [DeSantis] cares about is the White House. He doesn’t care about your house.”
As long as Crist mixes attacks on DeSantis with appeals to”our better angels,” I think he’ll do fine. This is an election where both parties will maximise base mobilization, I think, and Independent voters will probably decide it. They may like the Happy Warrior approach, especially when they compare Crist to the sour, scowling DeSantis

@Barbara: Crist did flip a Republican House seat in 2016, and has won reelection two times since. Republicans have moved so far to the right they have left a lot of moderate voters up for grabs. As long as he hasn’t compromised on policy, I think the consensus building style will serve Crist well with those voters. Tim Kaine used it to good effect in Virginia when that state was moving from red to purple.
It could be there was something about Fried personally that put off some Democratic leaders. Alex Sink was quoted in a Politico article as saying she trusted Crist based on their relationship, while “I did not develop that kind of personal relationship, even from a policy standpoint, with Nikki.”
Ms. Sink has remained active in Florida since she lost the 2010 Governor race to Scott by ~65,000 votes out of over 5 million. She established Ruth’s List, a state operation based on Emily’s List that promotes women candidates.
It looks like Florida Democrats based their choices largely on perceived electability. Evidently they did not think Fried was strong in that regard.

Both times she was revived, though. I hope, for your sake, that happens with your mom. I hope you have more time with her.
After the second time, we had the facility and her doctor get her approved for hospice care for when it would inevitably happen again. Most assisted living facilities will have that, but they don’t provide the service themselves, it has to be set up with the resident’s doctor and hospice care. (At least here in California). That made the third time she became unresponsive a sad, but peaceful experience.
None of us are ever ready. I wish you strength and peace at this time.

On an open thread note. That security analysis of twitter by (expert hacker or disgruntled employee)
will be used to try to change the terms in Elon Musk’s court case.
The facts I see are: 1. Elon Musk knew there was a bot problem at twitter because he said he was going to take it over to conquer the bots.
2. Elon Musk never did due diligence and renounced any need to do so in the takeover documents.
3. Twitter said ‘This is the method we use to count bots” – and we counted about 5% using it.”
They did NOT say “This method is accurate”. This is all in the SEC documents they have submitted.

@Low Key Swagger: I didn’t see it in the YouTube MJ highlights reel for today’s show. I can’t watch MSNBC on my computer at work, it’s blocked somehow.
ETA – never mind, somehow I can watch it now.

@New Deal democrat:
Yeah, some people perceive that the right to own slaves was taken away from their them and they’re still mad about that 150 years later.
Old School
@Immanentize: Here’s hoping things work out for the best. Your in my thoughts.

Yes, surface objection to birthright citizenship in the 14th Amendment goes along with an objection to the second clause of the 14th – no payment to ex-slaveholders for the loss of their property.

In the 1930s and 40s Democrats could run against Hoover and beat the shit out of Republicans. Now we can run against Trump for the next 50 years.

@Geminid: Not to mention the continued refrain that Dem politicians need to “excite” their voters to win.
Dunno about you, but that kind of attitude irks me, because I think it directly led to the predicament we’re in, where only Republican voters are reliable
Miss Bianca
@Steve in the ATL: Go over to Chebeague Island? It’s lovely. I seem to recall there’s a ferry from Portland, or you can go down the coast to Yarmouth.
Soprano2
@Low Key Swagger: I listened to it. I thought his answer about voting was good, and I thought what he said about abortion was good. I think the “battlefield of love” stuff was unfortunate and not at all how he should be framing the contrast, but that’s all anyone will remember about that interview, which is the problem. They definitely need to work on that. If I were him I wouldn’t talk too much about having previously been a Republican other than to highlight how radical DeSantis and his followers are compared with how Republicans used to be, because I don’t think the average voter gets it even now. Just my 0.02¢.
JWR
@germy shoemangler: Really enjoying your Twitter links this morning. Always loved me some Zinn, and I think I actually remember that letter Jon Schwartz sent to NPR. Thanks. ; )

I came here to highlight this article in Rolling Stone, which I think addresses @indycat32 ‘s question in the process. And, yes, supports my own theories about the whole document theft event. Trump has been demanding his lawyers get ‘his’ documents back. All of them. All the documents taken from Mar-A-Lago. I don’t think I need to comment further on how stupid, insane, and stereotypical Donald Trump that is.
Miss Bianca
@Omnes Omnibus: LOL

@JWR:
You’re welcome.

@gwangung: Funny, I thought the narrative was that Democrats need to not excite anyone. That the only way for a Dem to be electable is to not offend literally anybody and to promise to not make more than cosmetic policy changes.
That’s the message I get from the MSM every cycle.
Baud
@Kropacetic:
I think that, oftentimes when people talk about “excitement,” they conflate “exciting” policy positions with “exciting” personalities. And too often, people assume that candidates that lack exciting personalities don’t have solid policy positions worthy of support.
Gin & Tonic
@Steve in the ATL: When in Portland eat at Duckfat. They fry their french fries in, you guessed it… They are, as they say in these parts, wicked good.
Kropacetic
@Baud: Yeah, it’s too bad we don’t have an institution dedicated to informing potential voters about these policies, the facts around them, and the potential impacts.
Someone should make something like that, they would have new content every day. Don’t know what to call it but something to the effect of “what’s new.”
Soprano2
Well this was totally predictable. Supposed “independent” candidate for Senate in MO John Woods has dropped out of the race, telling everyone the only reason he was running in the first place was to prevent Eric Greitens from winning. My take on this is that he figured out that the only candidate he would be taking votes from was Republican Eric Schmitt, which would help the Democrat win, and he didn’t want to do that, so he dropped out. He really shit on John Danforth by doing this, because it was Danforth who got him to quit his job to run for Senate. I guess Wood doesn’t think Eric “I’m suing every MO school district that tries to prevent Covid because I don’t believe in that” Schmitt is too extreme for Missouri. Totally predictable.
Geminid
@gwangung: I think that most of the people who crave “excitement” from candidates are actually reliable Democratic voters. At least the ones here are. They sometimes project that desire onto less committed voters, but that may or may not be so. What excites them may not be what excites the voters they think of.
I think Democrats like Val Demings, Cheri Beasley, Tim Ryan and Mark Kelly are every bit as strong candidates as “exciting” ones like John Fetterman. They may not give a national audience the thrill that others may, but they know they need to win voters in their states and I think they know their business. The only excitement I want from them is the excitement I’ll get when they win
I would make an exception here for Beto O’Rourke. He is a truly charismatic speaker and indefatigable campaigner. His ability to inspire Democrats and excite Texas voters may make the difference in his uphill fight.
Baud
@Kropacetic:
Eh, it’ll never fly.
Soprano2
@Geminid: I noticed that in his MJ interview Crist mentioned some local FL issues, like the problem with insurance. This is the kind of thing he could really make hay with, saying that while DeSantis is busy running for president he’s ignoring the actual concerns and problems of the people of FL. That wouldn’t be exciting to me, but it would resonate with people in FL. I can’t blame people for wanting to be inspired by politicians, but not all of them can be like Barack Obama.
Kropacetic
@Baud: OK, what if we focused instead on trivialities and whatever can draw eyeballs for a quick buck?
Baud
@Kropacetic:
It’s one weird trick that just might work!

One cat’s opinion:
The text says “I can’t” – the context is the “parade” of russian military equipment in Kyiv.
gwangung
@Geminid: My thought is that these are holders of Democratic and progressive values, not necessarily Democratic voters. There are regular voters among this co-hort, but I think this also is an attitude for farther left potential voters who aren’t quite as reliable. And that feeds on itself to a certain extend.
And, yes, part of it is conflating “exciting” personas with exciting policy positions.
Barbara
@Steve in the ATL: My SIL lives in Portland these days, and we usually try to get in a trip to Portland Headlight when we visit: https://portlandheadlight.com/
The last time we were there, we ate at some of the food trucks that congregate around Fort Allen Park, with a really nice view of the water. I think there are some ferries and boat tours that are recommended, but we haven’t done that in a while.
I would actually peruse the restaurants in the downtown area and if there is one that really strikes your fancy, try to get reservations in advance. We found that most were solidly booked by the day on which you hope to eat there. We ate at a waterfront seafood place (of which there are more than a few) and I thought it was very nice, so if you like to be spontaneous, it is possible.
It’s not far to the White Mountains of New Hampshire if you are interested in seeing that area. Now I can’t remember the name of the mountain trail we hiked (Mt. Moriah?), but it is the lowest elevation mountain you can hike to the top of, and the views were spectacular. Also, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway is actually a really nice thing to do — I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Geminid
@Soprano2: Crist may have been alluding to insurance problems last night when he said, “All [DeSantis] cares about is the White House. He doesn’t care about your house.”
I think DeSantis has raised a lot of money from the insurance industry, which would make this an especially good line of attack.
Barbara
@Geminid: I think Nikki Fried said something similar, to the effect, that DeSantis won’t notice high insurance prices until they don high heels and a dress and make noises about gender identity.
Geminid
@gwangung: There are a lot of further left people who are reliable Democratic voters despite misgivings they may have. But when it comes to further left “opinion leaders,” I do not trust the good faith of many of them. They really do not want the Democratic party to succeed as the moderate/liberal coalition it currently is, and a lot of their arguments are intended to undermine the party within their ideological cohort.
Kropacetic
@Geminid: I have culled a few such people from my Youtube feed. It’s OK to critique Democrats, but there still needs to be a standard of truthfulness and appropriate context provided.
Low Key Swagger
@Omnes Omnibus: Agreed but I promise that’s not me. Not a fan of pendants either. There are going to be a lot more press opportunities and my hope is he will have more direct answers to the issues when asked. Someone upthread mentioned his successes State-wide and they were right. It’s still ok to call a whiff a whiff.
Low Key Swagger
@Soprano2: Agreed.

@JWR: The congresscritter who pushed the In God We Trust bill through said it was because we trust a “sovereign God”. It’s all about a superior Czar like God. The message is to be obedient or be punished for disturbing order. Many horrifying things spring from this ideology. See: women, minorities, refugees, liberals, etc.

@Argiope: Thanks for being gay supportive. Most LGBTQ people of my generation did not have that and it’s still too few.
I watched The Murder of Emmett Till and then had to turn off the Frontline about the conservative takeover of the Supreme Court. I had to turn it off because I couldn’t take anymore stories about the seething hatred some people have for anyone different than their group.
