… In its latest weekly assessment of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.N. health agency said there were 5.3 million new cases and more than 14,000 deaths reported last week. WHO said the number of new infections declined in every world region except the Western Pacific.
Deaths jumped by more than 183% in Africa but fell by nearly a third in Europe and by 15% in the Americas. Still, WHO warned that COVID-19 numbers are likely severely underestimated as many countries have dropped their testing and surveillance protocols to monitor the virus, meaning that there are far fewer cases being detected.

I know it’s easy to assume everyone who doesn’t wear masks are people who are ignorant and/or cruel, but there are definitely some who are as scared of being different, or ridiculed, as they are of losing their health. Wise choices have been stigmatized.
Since those in power, who are supposed to set a standard and expectation of caring about each other, have opted out, it’s really up to each of us to support, educate, and protect each other. Even if it’s just one mask, and one person, at a time. 🙏

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health reported 3,206 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, for a cumulative reported total of 4,768,394 cases. It also reported eight deaths for an adjusted cumulative total of 36,185 deaths – 0.76% of the cumulative reported total, 0.76% of resolved cases.
41,752 Covid-19 tests were conducted on 23rd August, with a positivity rate of 8.1%.
There were 35,988 active cases yesterday, 1,018 than the day before. 1,271 were in hospital. 69 confirmed cases were in ICU; of these patients, 42 confirmed cases were on ventilators. Meanwhile, 2,180 more patients recovered, for a cumulative total of 4,696,221 patients recovered – 98.5% of the cumulative reported total.
3,202 new cases reported yesterday were local infections. Four new cases were imported.
The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) administered 5,134 doses of vaccine on 25th August: 452 first doses, 752 second doses, 1,004 first booster doses, and 2,926 second booster doses. The cumulative total is 72,246,131 doses administered: 28,089,522 first doses, 27,489,260 second doses, 16,213,219 first booster doses, and 454,130 second booster doses. 86.0% of the population have received their first dose, 84.2% their second dose, 49.6% their first booster dose, and 1.4% their second booster dose.

Being stuck in a bare hotel room without so much as your own overnight bag, much less the chance to make arrangements for an unplanned ‘absence’ from home / dependents / work, would not really strike me as an upgrade from Ikea, to be fair…

I read the lists carefully and shuddered for each person. Now I skim through the stats and don’t give it a second thought.
Part of that is I’ve convinced myself (wrongly, I know but it is my coping mechanism) that four shots have made me invincible. Though somehow that thought co-exists with me still donning a mask in crowds.

The study cited in the tweet about the effectiveness of Paxlovid was interesting to me. I saw it somewhere yesterday. 100,000+ patients were studied in Israel and the results found that Paxlovid was effective for patients 65+ but had no effect for patients under 65.
Our oldest (in his 50s) had just gone to his doctor to see if he could get a script for Paxlovid (at my recommendation) when he tested positive earlier in the week. His doctor refused due to his current medications.
So when that study came out I told him that it looks like Paxlovid wouldn’t have helped him anyway. So it all worked out.

Biobot has been updated through the 24th, showing nearly a 40% reduction in COVID since it’s recent peak. That is equivalent to a little over 300,000 “real” new cases of COVID daily. Regionally the West has stopped declining at 50% from peak, but the Midwest has resumed declining after a rebound two weeks ago.
Nationwide there were 84,200 confirmed cases on a weekly average basis yesterday, also roughly a 40% decline from recent peak. Hospitalizations have declined about 20% to 38,600. Deaths were 495, still close to their recent peak.
Confirmed cases are declining in all four Census regions, and no State is particularly deviating from that trend. PR is the worst affected jurisdiction averaging over 60 cases per 100,000 people, followed by many States in the Deep South plus AK. The States with the lowest cases are NV and VT at just over 10 cases, followed by most of the Northern tier of rural States plus AZ. The seasonal pattern of peaks in the South and troughs in the North during summer appears to have played out again this year.
Because there is no new bad variant on the upswing, I expect cases and hospitalizations to continue to decline, and deaths to start to decline, for the next few weeks at least.

Jiangsu Province reported 1 new domestic confirmed (previously asymptomatic at Suqian) & 6 new domestic asymptomatic (3 at Nantong, 2 at Taizhou & 1 at Nanjing) cases, all new domestic positive cases are persons under centralized quarantine. 3 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 4 active domestic confirmed & 31 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the province. As the province does not separate recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases at the different jurisdictions, due to the simultaneous outbreaks in different locations. 2 sites at Nanjing are at Medium Risk.
Zhejiang Province reported 1 new domestic asymptomatic (at Hangzhou) case, found via community screening. 4 domestic confirmed & 15 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. As the province does not break down recoveries by imported & domestic cases, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases there. 1 site at Ningbo is currently at High Risk. 3 sites at Wenzhou & 1 at Ningbo are currently at Medium Risk.
Fujian Province reported 1 new domestic confirmed (at Xiamen) case, a traced close contacts of domestic positive cases elsewhere & under centralized quarantine. 5 domestic confirmed cases recovered. There currently are 66 active domestic confirmed & 37 active domestic asymptomatic cases remaining. As the province does not separate recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases at the different jurisdictions, due to the simultaneous outbreaks in different locations. 1 site at Fuzhou are currently at Medium Risk.
Jiangxi Province reported 32 new domestic asymptomatic (29 at Guixi in Yingtan, 2 at Xinzhou District in Shangrao, & 1 at Fengcheng in Yichun) cases. 31 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 7 active domestic confirmed (all at Yingtan) & 130 active domestic asymptomatic (99 at Yingtan, 16 at Shangrao, 8 at Yichun, 4 at Fuzhou, & 1 each at Ji’an, Jiujiang & Nanchang) cases in the province. 29 sites at Yingtan & 3 at Shangrao are currently at High Risk. 54 sites at Yingtan & 3 at Shangrao are currently at Medium Risk.
Sichuan Province reported 69 new domestic confirmed (8 previously asymptomatic, 47 at Chengdu, 3 each at Mianyang & Yibin, 2 each at Guang’an, Ngawa Prefecture & Suining, 1 each at Bazhong, Zigong & Ziyang, & 7 at unspecified locations) & 78 new domestic asymptomatic (34 at Nanchong, 20 at Chengdu, 3 at Guangyuan, 2 each at Mianyang, Ngawa Prefecture, Suining & Zigong, 1 each at Garzê Prefecture, Guang’an, Liangshan, Neijiang & Ziyang, & 8 at unspecified locations) cases, 113 of the new domestic positive cases are traced close contacts under centralized quarantine, 19 were transferred from out of province in “closed loops”, 12 via screening of residents in Medium/High Risk areas (all at Chengdu), 9 from fever clinics (all at Chengdu), & 6 via voluntary testing (all at Chengdu). 3 domestic confirmed & 1 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. As the province does not break down recoveries by imported & domestic cases, I cannot track the count of active domestic cases there. 51 sites at Nanchong, 54 at Chengdu, 7 at Ngawa Prefecture, & 1 each at Luzhou & Mianyang are currently at High Risk. 54 sites at Chengdu, 28 at Nanchong, 3 at Ngawa Prefecture, & 1 each at Luzhou & Mianyang are currently at Medium Risk.
Chongqing Municipality reported 10 new domestic confirmed (1 previously asymptomatic, 5 at Shapingba District, 2 at Beibei District, 1 each at Bishan, Ba’nan & Jiulongpo Districts) & 18 new domestic asymptomatic (10 at Nan’an District, 2 each at Pengshui County & Jiulongpo & Yuzhong Districts, & 1 each at Bishan & Shapingba Districts) cases, 25 of the new domestic positive cases are traced close contacts under centralized quarantine, 1 via screening of residents in Medium/High Risk Areas, & 1 via screening of persons deemed at risk of exposure. 7 domestic confirmed & 5 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 124 active domestic confirmed & 126 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the city. 32 sites are currently at High Risk, & 49 at Medium Risk.
At Guizhou Province there currently are 6 active domestic confirmed (3 at Qiannan Prefecture & 1 each at Bijie, Tongren & Zunyi) & 7 active domestic asymptomatic (4 at Bijie, 2 at Qiannan Prefecture, & 1 at Zunyi) cases in the city. 1 site at Qiannan Prefecture is currently at High Risk, & 1 at Medium Risk.
Qinghai Province reported 79 new domestic asymptomatic cases. 3 domestic confirmed & 18 domestic asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 18 active domestic confirmed & 772 active domestic asymptomatic cases in the region. As the province does not break down recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot traced the active domestic cases in each jurisdictions due to multiple outbreaks at the same time.
Tibet “Autonomous” Region reported 24 new domestic confirmed (1 previously asymptomatic) & 570 new domestic asymptomatic cases. 24 domestic confirmed & 18 asymptomatic cases recovered. There currently are 462 active domestic confirmed & 6,255 active domestic asymptomatic cases. The region is not breaking the counts of active domestic positive cases by administrative region.
Yunnan Province reported 2 new domestic asymptomatic cases, location not specified, a traced close contact under centralized quarantine & a person coming from out of province testing positive upon arrival. There currently are 12 active domestic confirmed & 24 active domestic asymptomatic cases there. As the province does not break down recoveries by jurisdictions, I cannot traced the active domestic cases in each jurisdictions due to multiple outbreaks at the same time. 1 site Kunming is currently at High Risk, & 1 at Medium Risk.
Imported Cases
On 8/28, Mainland China reported 51 new imported confirmed cases (2 previously asymptomatic), 89 imported asymptomatic cases, 0 imported suspect cases:
Overall in Mainland China, 636 confirmed cases recovered (72 imported), 1,298 asymptomatic cases were released from isolation (102 imported) & 36 were reclassified as confirmed cases (2 imported), & 20,015 individuals were released from quarantine. Currently, there are 6,648 active confirmed cases in the country (547 imported), 33 in serious/critical condition (all domestic), 22,062 active asymptomatic cases (736 imported), 0 suspect cases. 213,002 traced contacts are currently under centralized quarantine.
As of 8/28, 3,431.965M vaccine doses have been injected in Mainland China, an increase of 174K doses in the past 24 hrs.
On 8/28, Hong Kong added 9,708 new positive cases, 213 imported & 9,495 domestic (2,930 via RT-PCR & 6,565 from rapid antigen tests), 10 new deaths (62 – 99 y.o., 1 unvaccinated & 6 un-boosted).
On 8/28, Taiwan added 20,488 new positive cases, 288 imported & 20,160 domestic (including 50 moderate or serious). There were 22 new deaths (ages ranging from 50+ y.o. to 90+ y.o., actual dates of death range from 6/17 – 8/25, 20 w/ underlying conditions, 7 fully vaccinated & boosted).
