Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

White supremacy is terrorism.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Late Night Squishable Open Thread

I don’t see Anne Laurie in the back room, so I’ll put up this squishable open thread, as Betty likes to call them.

I just listened to Charlie Crist’s speech from election night, and it really was good.  It’s hearting to hear him, and President Biden and others, describing the stakes in black and white.  Who was the young kid to Crist’s left?  Grandson?  He looks like a character.

I am heading to bed, so here’s your open thread.  Use it for music or dancing or whatever you like.

    @phdesmond:
Gosh, I’m shocked. I heard he was a doddering old fool confined to a hover-round who could barely string two words together.

I will disagree with POTUS on one thing: MAGA isn’t “semi-fascism”. It’s full-bore fascism. Watch Triumph of the Will. Watch newsreels of Mussolini and his blackshirts and then watch a Trump rally or even just a segment of Tucker Carlson. Fascism isn’t a set of policies or even a coherent ideology. It’s a mood, or spectacle. It’s an incoherent array of grievances and resentments that the demagogue dramatically evokes and then directs towards a set of enemies and opponents that only he alone can defeat if only he is given the absolute power to sweep aside any opposition. That’s MAGA. And it’s straight-up fascism. It’s only a matter of time before Republican rallies are accompanied by goose-stepping parades of armed paramilitary squads.

Megan Coyne, the voice of New Jersey, is headed to the White House
Livingston native leaves post as governor’s social media director to join Biden administration

By David Wildstein, August 02 2022 3:06 pm

Just five years after interning on Phil Murphy’s 2017 gubernatorial campaign, Livingston native Megan Coyne is on her way to the White House.

Coyne, one of the architects of New Jersey’s hugely successful Twitter account with an attitude departed last week as Murphy’s social media director to join the Biden administration.

“It’s an absolute dream come true to be joining the Office of Digital Strategy as Deputy Director of Platforms,” Coyne said on Twitter on Monday. “So excited for the journey ahead.”

Coyne and her boss at the time, Pearl Gabel, brought life and a quintessential New Jersey manner to a once dull state-run Twitter account that began to take off in 2019.

“Who lets New Jersey have a Twitter?” tweeted someone with 88 followers.

The reply – “Your mom” – had nearly a half-million likes and 85,000 retweets.
