Dad had surgery last night and they inserted a rod in his whatever and didn’t have to do a full replacement hip surgery, and he is in recovery and might be released tomorrow.
I’d have more details but you talk to an irritable 80 year old on dilaudid.
Ohio Mom
Sounds like good news to me. Sending him my best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
Tom Levenson
Sorry re Bigfoot.* Glad your dad was able to avoid the full megillah.
*I post once every couple of months these days, and this is my timing!
mrmoshpotato
Good to hear. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery.
eclare
All sounds good. Hope Dad Cole gets to go home tomorrow!

Best wishes to dad and family Cole on a quick and full recovery. 👍👍👍 I’m sure the JRTs will take good care of him.
You note they avoided a full hip replacement, which is a very involved surgery. I’ll add knowing several folks who have gone through the whole Magilla, each is very happy with the outcome and recovering lost mobility.

Very glad to hear it, John!
NetheadJay
Ah yes, old people on strong stuff. Been there.
I’m not that old but have also been the one taking the medicine. It’s… an experience.
Frank Wilhoit
Ah, good ol’ “Deluded”. Don’t let them keep him on that for more than a day or two, or he may become very confused and paranoid.
SiubhanDuinne
That’s very good news, John! All best to your dad, and please let us know more once he’s off the dilaudid. Or on the dilaudidn’t.
NotoriousJRT
Best wishes for your dad’s recovery, Cole. Sending lots of positive energy his/your way. Thanks for taking time to keep us updated.
Rob
This is good news, John. My best to your dad and for his recovery.
Elizabelle
Possible release tomorrow. Terrific. May he recover well.
prostratedragon
Sounds like excellent news on the surgery. You know what they always say — avoid major financial decisions!
JohnC
When I was on Dilaudid in the hospital it made me very very calm and wanting lots more Dilaudid.
I’m so glad to hear that Dad is doing better than feared.
TaMara
Glad to hear. And glad he’s going to be released. The hardest part for my dad was being in the hospital. Once home, he was calmer and recovery was easier.
James E Powell
Very good news. Be gentle with him. It ain’t easy getting old.
Raoul Paste
We are hoping for the best.
I think Art Linkletter wrote a book called “growing old is not for sissies”, or something similar
Yes, Art Linkletter. I’m that old

🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾for Papa Cole.
May he make a complete recovery.🤗
Betty Cracker
Glad they’re springing Papa Cole soon!
JaneE
Good news. Imagine how cranky he would be without dilaudid.
SFAW
Glad to hear he’s (relatively) OK.

It still kind of freaks me out how quickly they release people from the hospital after fairly major surgery. Is it lack of resources or is it the new medical wisdom that patients are better at home? Seems to me that a couple days pampering and monitoring by pros would not come amiss. A friend of mine had hip replacement this week and was released either the same day or the next day. Golly.
Josie
Thanks for keeping us updated, John. I’ve been wondering how he is doing. Glad he will be able to go home soon. He will be much less irritable. Hope your Mom will have some help.

@JoyceH: Older people don’t do well with extended stays in the hospital. It really pushed my father into a much less robust mental state.
ETA: Oh, and, I’m glad the surgery went well!
JCNZ
John, you have to write a novel. Irascible former soldier living in West Virginia, fish out of water politically, gets involved in a (something). There’s a woman (etc). Put me down for a signed copy.
Good news about your dad.
eclare
@JoyceH: The longer you stay in a hospital, the greater the chance you’ll pick up an infection, like staph. But I see your point, my mom was once released IMHO way too early and was back in two days later. But she had difficult heart issues, not a fairly common surgery.
JoyceH
@eclare: True about infections, but… When you send them home, SOMEBODY has to look after them. Incompetent family members, if you’re lucky. If you’re not lucky, you’re pretty much on your own.
My older sister broke an ankle a few months ago, and was in the hospital for at least a week (they had to put in multiple little metal thingies, I think), and then in rehab for over a month. They seem to take into consideration the housing situation – her house is a split foyer and there’s no way to get in or out without some fairly significant stair work.
oldster
I hope your dad’s rehab goes smooth and easy.
la caterina
Glad he could have a less extensive surgery. feel better soon, Papa Cole!
HeleninEire
Good to hear about your Dad.
Mai Naem mobile
Glad to hear about your dad. May he heal fast.
@JoyceH: You’re more likely to do stuff for yourself at home which helps you become mobile faster. In the hospital the ‘pampering’ a lot of times is the staff who are in a hurry doing stuff for you because they don’t have the patience to have you slowly do it yourself. And,yeah, the nosocomial infections.
JKC
I hope he has a speedy recovery, John.
Juju
That’s such nice news. I hope the rest of his recovery goes smoothly. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
narya
@JoyceH: I had organs removed and went home THAT DAY. Kinda blew me away, but I was very glad of it, too. I could eat real food, move around more, etc., and I never even needed the opiates.
Glad your dad’s doing okay, John!
Anonymous At Work
Glad to hear he’s recovering. And you have plenty of details. “Accurate details,” “details that make sense,” and “details that I can print without embarrassing myself and my family” are what you are lacking. Dilaudid is way beyond anything a druggy doctor would give themselves.
Oh, and enjoy the recovery period, many blessings to your mother, and “May your father remember he has a broken hip and act accordingly.”
CaseyL
Very happy to hear Papa Cole came through surgery OK and may go home tomorrow!
Hope he doesn’t make you and Mama Cole too crazy :)
Miss Bianca
Yay for Dad Cole news, hope he recovers apace!

That sounds good and I hope his recovery goes well. Thanks for updating us.

Mom Cole must be besides herself with worry.
Brachiator
Very good news. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Be patient with any required physical therapy.
Heidi Mom
Very happy for you and your family, John. Take care.

@Raoul Paste: Betty Davis iirc
jonas
@JoyceH: Combination of needing to free up beds and preventing post-op infections. The longer you’re in the hospital the higher your chances are of getting some awful antibiotic-resistant superbug.
O. Felix Culpa
Congrats and continued healing to Cole Dad and much strength and patience to Cole Mom and siblings.
karen marie
@JoyceH: Given the horrible problems one can pick up in the hospital, it’s probably a good thing that people are there for shorter periods of time.
Best wishes to Cole Senior for an uneventful and swift recovery!
Betsy
Wishing your dad well.

Husband had major back surgery that went well then badly but is resolved now. Whole experience was terrifying. Glad your dad’s path was smoother.
