Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

I really should read my own blog.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Bark louder, little dog.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Usually wrong but never in doubt

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

“But what about the lurkers?”

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

You cannot shame the shameless.

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Flash Fundraising: Four Directions Last-Minute Help Needed

Nevada Four Directions Native Vote 1

Four Directions is having unexpected last-minute expenses due to 1) cold weather increased transportation costs as they try to get people to the polls,  2)  picking up some slack from another organization that wasn’t able to proceed as expected at the last minute, and 3) legal costs related to shenanigans with polling places for the Native vote.

Four Directions is filing emergency motions – there is some wild west shit going on as they try to keep Native folks from voting in NV.  Some of the counties are acting in direct violation of court orders, and one of the things Four Directions is doing is trying to get back 4 hours of time that was lost at the polls over the last 4 days.

Right now, our Four Directions contact is charging everything to his personal credit card, and I’d like for us to help them out if we can.

We raised what the minimum they needed, and got them $2,500 more so they have some wiggle room for whatever else pops up today. They send their profound thanks.

I had to break into the emergency kettle corn already.

I was trying to get some work done for a client with a Thursday deadline when the farmer called to get my weekly order, Four Directions called while I was on the phone with him, so I jumped off to talk to them, then Four Directions had to jump off the call to talk to another organization that was calling him, then I was on the phone with the vet about Mr. Bear’s visit yesterday when Four Directions called back to finish our call.

I am almost always multitasking and I don’t usually fluster easily, but today I apparently do.  Deep breaths.

Stick with $5k or give them some wiggle room?

Four days ago my twitter feed started with Donald Trump Jr.  The Trump had “followed by Johathan Chait” above it.  So I unfollowed Chait.  The next day Megan McCain, then Marjorie Taylor Green and today, even though I don’t follow Chait anymore, there was Trump Jr. again.

I never have and never will follow any of those people, and unfollow those who do and it hasn’t made a difference so far.  I have never blocked anyone, but I guess I am going to have to figure out how.

I added some to this and also the Janet Mills thermometer. I have a monthly also to Four Directions and I plan to keep it going so they have some base of funding stability.

I also want to share that I got a hand-written thank-you note from the campaign of Dana Allmond in Arizona. I think that must have been part of one of the group thermometers, so my individual contribution would not have been a lot. I’ll write them a note back after the election and tell them Balloon-Juice is responsible.

I don’t know if you recall, but that’s kind of how we first got connected to Four Directions.  We put up a thermometer and they wrote to one of the BJ peeps who donated.  They said they were getting all these donations from something called Balloon Juice and they didn’t know what that was.

    @Immanentize:

Sorry, I thought you were referring to Benjamin Franklinberg.

@WaterGirl:  And thank you, for knowing the difference between “discreet” and “discrete,” from those of us with OCD and delicate sensibilities.  Like me.

    @WaterGirl: Yay for treadmill!

And thank you for doing this!  I only put in $5 but I was glad to do it.

@Anotherlurker: A very tough day for you. You have shared your love for Addie with all of us, and we’ll treasure her memory with you. Four Seasons will be all the stronger for it, too.

So proud of Balloon Juice jackals pitching in to help. Amazing to raise $7,500 in a hour or two in an election day emergency. We have a monthly contribution to these folks, have a close feeling for the Native areas of AZ, NM, etc. More than 20 months now, and not a small donation. And now I’m a little teary over it all.

I’m avoiding the news channel, after spending an hour or two installing a new router to stop the video feed for Wife from stopping every few minutes. The new router is SO FAST compared to the old one! and installed easily too! Wife is happy, so I’m happy too.

Thanks to everyone for helping these good folks out !!

A week or so ago I pontificated in this blog’s comments that late money in a campaign is wasted money.

Well, I certainly was wrong about that.
