President Biden spoke with reporters briefly in Nantucket after bringing pies to the fire hall.
He said he thinks there’s still enough support in Congress for more Ukraine aid, repeated his desire to ban assault weapons and said oil price cap talks are still “in play.” pic.twitter.com/m6xXVaJjUn

Jill and I were honored to speak with women and men of our Armed Forces this afternoon.
You gave up your seat at the Thanksgiving table to defend us – and we owe you a debt of gratitude.

President Biden & the First Lady spoke today with the two owners of Club Q, the site of the shooting massacre in Colorado Springs.
They “reiterated their support for the community as well as their commitment to fighting back against hate and gun violence,” per the White House.

The president and first lady called military units today to thank them and wish service members a happy holiday. Last year, they did so publicly with pool coverage. This year, the calls were closed press and WH provided a list of units called. pic.twitter.com/49Etm3k3Ia

Then I’ll go pick up my mom — we’re having Thanksgiving dinner at our home this year. I hope you and your family are having a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Great day so far.
Suzanne
I was thinking about that book “White Noise” by Don DeLillo, since I just learned that there is a movie of it starring Adam Driver that comes out next month. I read it in college and loved it. Just went to my shelves to find it and it was missing (my other three DeLillo books are there, though). The ex-Mr. Suzanne took some of my books — without my permission — when we broke up. I bet he got that one, too. Grrr.
$17 for a new one. Sigh. Will be here next week.

My nephew is part of the Secret Service detail with Biden family in Nantucket. He says Joe and Jill came by to thank them for giving up Thanksgiving with their families and laid out a spread that is sending agents into tryptophan comas.

@Suzanne: Yup exes are like that.
japa21
@JPL: Which is why I’ve done my best to make sure Mrs. Japa doesn’t want to be one.

This is a Facebook post by the brewery owner who was involved in taking down the shooter at Club Q in Colorado Springs. They have been overwhelmed by orders.
Comrade Colette
Well, dammit, Covid finally caught up with our efforts to outrun it. My teenage son went to bed sick last night and tested positive this morning. He probably brought it home from his grocery-stocking job but who knows, and it doesn’t matter. At the last second, we had to cancel our already tiny T-day get-together with in-laws. They get all the turkey and mashed potatoes and we get all the pie and salad. I happened to have a whole duck on hand, so it’s in the oven. Monsieur Colette and I are asymptomatic and negative. We’re thankful for vaccines, boosters, medical staff who work on holidays, and ducks.
Wishing health and gratitude (and something for which to be grateful) to the jackals.

Ha, Anne Laurie, with regard to your choice of music, I’ve been reading a book I got from my sister’s collection last year, called Longbourn, by Jo Baker. It’s yet another reworking of Pride and Prejudice, but this time told from the point of view of the Bennet family servants. Let’s just say it’s…an eye-opening experience. Less about the romantic travails of the Bennet sisters and more about all the back-breaking amount of work it takes from the servants to get them to the point where the young ladies can moon over young gentlemen.
(Thanking God right now that I had the whole day off doing nothing except for cooking and eating, and no waiting on anyone else!)
Miss Bianca
@Jersey Tomato:
That sounds like it could be dangerous!//
JPL
@japa21: Sweet.

@Miss Bianca:
Hmmm, that sounds fascinating. I may have to read that. Thanks!
Suzanne
@JPL: @japa21: It’s worth a lot more than $17 to be divorced! That’s a bargain in comparison!
I remember going to pick up Spawn the Elder from his house one time, and seeing my copy of The Executioner’s Song on his bookshelf. I snatched it right back. I even showed him where it got stained from accidentally being thrown in a dumpster. DON’T FUCK WITH MY BOOKS.

@Miss Bianca: That sounds interesting. Whenever I watch a period movie I always marvel at the human and material resources required to get the hero and heroine out of the door. Sometimes, as in the beginning of Dangerous Liasons, it’s quite explicit.

Electricity comes back on in part of Kyiv – and people shout “Glory to Ukraine” through their windows.
I’m so thankful for those who are fighting back against Russian invasion.

A happy day here in Vermont. I took the big dog for trail walkies in the am (amazingly the local coffee shop was open when we came down out of the park), then ran a 5k on the UVM women’s x-country team course as a fundraiser for the team and food drive. Then I was sous chef extraordinaire (and dishwasher boy) while my wife made a really fantastic dinner. Took my daughter to the playground just before dinner was served. Just my family and MIL but it was very nice.
Happy thanksgiving, everyone!

@Benw: GO DAWGS!!

@raven: this is an evergreen comment!
Betsy
We had thanksgiving with my sibling’s in-laws. My mom and dad and I were in a horrific wreck in June (as some of you may recall) and I didn’t think we would see this day. Normal thanksgiving in a house of family members. Felt good.
My dad has so many problems though and I dread the days to come.

@Betsy: Happy Thanksgiving and I hope the days to come show progress, although the road ahead might be difficult.

@MazeDancer: I saw this on a comment from your link

Had a good day. Continuing to heal/rest. Mama Cisco is good and with my niece.

@MazeDancer: Very good to see!

Did the last guy ever do anything with the military beyond a photo op? Not even gonna pretend to ask if anyone in that family ever volunteered to help people.
Betsy
@JPL: Thank you.
Argiope
@Suzanne: That movie was filmed 2 blocks and 8 miles from me. Neighbors volunteered their house for the inside scenes, and the outside scenes involved repainting the main drag of the closest town to mine. I never had an Adam sighting, alas. Walked my dog as close as I could get and met some tech folks, but that was it. We were all on high Kylo alert for a few weeks.
Jackie
@JPL: He cracks me up when he laughs at his own jokes😁
Alison Rose
@JPL: I love the sarcastic little laugh Malia gives him after the Hunger Games joke :P
Alison Rose
@Jackie: Me too! That’s one of the most charming things about him–the way he’ll tell a joke, let other people chuckle a bit, and then in the silence, laugh himself. Love that dude.

I live 1 hr. from Nantucket Steamship to the island…..you must be so proud of your nephew.
zhena gogolia
@Jersey Tomato: That’s sweet.
Suzanne
@Argiope: That’s cool. I find Adam Driver hot. Which I also find confusing, because he’s kind of goofy-looking. And yet hot. WTF.
Alison Rose
@Suzanne: Sounds like the concept of “sexy-ugly” from Kissing Jessica Stein.

Typical for a holiday, internet connectivity went walkabout for some 2½ hours.

@NotMax: I didn’t get any tweets for about five hours, made me go hmmm. But I just got two, so all is well, I guess.

Currently watching Where the Crawdads Sing on netflix (and reading BJ) Very meh for me. Thinking of abandoning it and let the spousal unit fill me in later. Formulaic. And why can’t American actresses play these roles?

Mike Lindell is going to challenge Ronna Romney McDaniel for RNC Chair.
No, not a joke. Really happening.

I watched the Lindsey Lohan Christmas movie on Netflix last night, well, I watched as much as I could take, and man was it bad. Even the sassy gay personal assistant and the “glam squad” couldn’t make a dent in that sappy mess.
eclare
@HumboldtBlue: Why did you watch that? Serious question. Is it supposed to be good?
Soprano2
@Suzanne: There’s a guy in my choir who looks a lot like Adam Driver. If he grew the same facial hair he could probably be one of those celebrity impersonators.
HumboldtBlue
@eclare:
Hell no, those crappy movies serve as a muse for texts with my home girl. I get to describe the movie, and she gets the laughs. But even this one was too much for me.
eclare
@HumboldtBlue: Thanks. Figured there had to some reason other than you are a big Lindsey Lohan fan.
HumboldtBlue
@eclare:
Last year on here I described the ridiculous Knight at Xmas movie, an absurd tale that was at least fun to mock, but last night was a trip to the dentist.
Also, I’ve never understood the fascination with Lohan, she’s got a head shaped like a peanut M&M and the hairline of a coconut.

Both seasons of Home for Christmas on Netflix are enjoyable, without becoming drenched in sappiness.
