Anwar was sworn in at 5pm Malaysian time, three hours ago. Only yesterday he was trolling the media gathered outside his office. They crowded around his car as he was leaving to ask if there was any news. “Here’s some popcorn,” he replied, handing a bag out the car window. “Go catch a movie.”

The comments from around the world responding to the PSA about deep frying a turkey were funny. Worth the time to scroll and hit “more replies”.

Turkey is being prepped now; goes in the oven in about half an hour. Then mom and I start chopping and peeling and so on and so forth. Desserts were baked yesterday, so that’s done.

Since we moved back to Denver, we go over to friends for Thanksgiving. Normally it’s maybe 8 people, this year they’re hosting 20. There are some whackadoodles in the bunch we’re sure so Plague exposure would normally be a consideration.
We’re hoping, however, that because their 7-month pregnant daughter (first grandchild) will be there, that everybody attending will have taken that into consideration and either not come or be vaccinated or something.
Our next door neighbor is battling cancer again, he’s in his early 70s and in a lot of pain, confined to home. One of his daughters came up from Mexico, she’s unvaccinated, to stay with him. Took him flowers and arranged for a Thanksgiving meal to be delivered to him and his daughter but he’s in a tough spot emotionally dealing with this.

It’s my tradition on Thanksgiving to read my friend David Erik Nelson’s piece on Michigan, Thanksgiving, being Jewish, and being Jewish on Thanksgiving in Michigan. It’s funny as hell.
Van Buren
Because I am battling the worst cold I have had in a very long time, my fam won’t let me in the kitchen. I maintain that I am indispensable, and that there is no way that the 3 of them will be able to bake pies, roast a turkey, or make stuffing and gravy. All the other dishes either Ms. Van Buren or a kid will be able to make.
EmbraceYourInnerCrone
@Raven: sounds lovely! And the sunset was. Gorgeous. We are doing similar, we are cooking the sides together and my husband is deep frying a turkey. Then movie watching, dog walking and computer gaming (Guild Wars 2)

Today I am thankful for Paxlovid. Tested positive on Tuesday. Symptoms were pretty much the same as a bad cold with some chest pain when taking a deep breath. Went on it right away and feel so much better already. It did ruin our Thanksgiving plans. We were going to northern Wisconsin to visit Mrs. Japa’s brother and SIL. They are great people with their heads on straight. However, some of the extended family is Trumpier than Trump, so may be a blessing in disguise.

We’re going to our son and DIL’s house. We’re a little hesitant because we were exposed to covid Monday evening. That person didn’t test positive until Wednesday, and we both tested negative this morning, so I’m thinking we’re in the clear. Still, I’d hate to take them covid as a pre-Christmas present

This will be my first holiday away from family in nearly 20 years. I love them but I’m glad to be 1600 miles away from the drama. I’m going to dinner with a friend and his family this afternoon at a fancy-schmancy French place (his choice of venue). Afterwards he wants to go to the gay bar for drinks which sounds like its own special hell but he’s buying the beer so I can’t complain too much. Besides, maybe some of these queens will be entertaining drunks!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your fur/scale/feather babies :)

My youngest and her family of 5 arrived late night night after three days at Disneyland. They are still asleep in the guest room, or the guest dormitory as it’s called here. It may be a long time before they wake up so I have a few moments of quiet before I need to start breakfast and make the stuffing.

@Chris T.: My sister’s cat had an intense curiosity about dryers. She was always climbing into it when my mother was loading it. Then the inevitable day came when my mother shut the dryer door not knowing the cat had snuck in. An hour later she pulled out one dead kitty.
It can’t have been a pleasant way to go.

The cats and I will spend the day (and the next week) packing for a move; I’ve finally found a house after a year and a half. It’s farther from the coast than I’d prefer, in lake and ski country, but I’m looking forward to having a place of my own again.

I am thankful for BJ and all of the commentators! There will be 7 of us around the table this year, and we are going to be 100% vegetarian. In fact, everything will be vegan apart from butter and cream in one batch of mashed potatoes. I am making mushroom, chestnut, and pecan Wellington for the main course, it is all assembled and ready to go into the oven. Another thing I am thankful for: Pepperidge Farm puff pastry, which is vegan!
We will have 3 pies for 7 people, I wonder if that will be enough…
eclare
@evap: Your Wellington sounds wonderful, and I bet the smell fills the house!
Vegan puff pastry? What kind of fat does it use instead of butter?

My son caught what appears to be the flu and is down for the count, so Thanksgiving will be delayed until the weekend. Hoping he’s at least up to eating by then. We’d only planned to have one guest over, so not as big a deal as it might have been. I think I’ll make some blackberry jam today with some pulp I froze this summer.

This will be our first Thanksgiving without our mother (grandmother, great grandmother), who usually presided over the dinner. Everyone wants her particular stuffing. Now you too have something to be thankful for, along with 51+% of Americans who voted for liberal Democracy this month. Interesting fellow according to the BBC explainer I read, overcame a lot of rancid political attacks in his recent past.
Sounds like the King got everyone in his office and told them “You can’t leave until we have a Prime Minister!” — get to work you slackers! Good for him for taking charge and getting it done!!
That last part isn’t in quotes, but I’m sure it is what he was thinking to himself… ;~)

I had a big day yesterday, starting with an early afternoon appointment with my orthopedic surgeon, who replaced my shoulders back in 2016, along with Wife’s knees. I have bad knees, worse hips, and something going on with my back which he declined to diagnose specifically after that x-ray. Toldme to see my family practice Dr, whom he knows well who may refer me to a neurosurgeon who works on spines and saved Wife last spring.
Also — Got a giant injection of steroids into my worse knee, left, which made me gasp, though not twitch. Seems to have helped some. Very little cartilage in knees and hips, scary x-rays. Also have a appointment next month for surgery to remove an incipient tumor in my bladder. Hurray! Hope to meet with urologist/surgeon to discuss that soon.
Then off to shop for T-day foodstuffs. Went to Steak and Seafood shop, where I bought oysters, scallops and shrimp, thence to Kroger’s which was a madhouse, but thankful, everyone was being on their best behavior, asking please could you tall person reach that thin o the top shelf? Thank you so much, etc, etc. Was somewhat surprised, but really, everyone was totally polite and helpful. Was pitch dark when I got home! I stopped at Family Dollar and bought a $5.89 headlamp to negotiate the path up to the front door.
I have a little utility wagon I use to move provisions up to the house ( and trash beck down), it’s 230′ of uphill, with one sharp switchback 1/3 of the way up. At which point I had to dump the big bag of DF kibble and one sack of groceries, as the cart was too heavy for me to get rolling after the switchback. That stuff is still out there, I hope the dogs didn’t spread it all over the hillside. Going to look after I finish my coffee. Slept til 11 am thanks to modern medicine, after a V long Wednesday. Had nice love session with the two big dogs, which are cuddle bunnies.
No bird this year — just the Wife and I for dinner, which is going to be seafood with deviled eggs and a big mixed greens salad, and a store bought pecan pie, which we have had before, it’s quite tolerable. Should have bought heavy cream to whip, oh well, can use the butter pecan ice-cream instead…
Happy Holidays, everyone.

Should you have a can of evaporated milk hanging about, can use that to make a substitute topping. Crucial that the bowl and the attachment(s) need to be cold, cold, cold. Works as well without addition of any sugar or flavoring.
